It depends on your personality, if you're generally someone who have naivety and a strong optimism bias then I'd say being cynical is harder. If you are somewhat of a depressive realist (very few people are since people generally have an optimism bias) then cynicism tends to be easier since predicting an outcome several standard deviations below the mean will likely result in an outcome much better than expected. Sincerity and cynicism are not mutual exclusive since you can be both.
To a degree, for example I'm a Bruins fan but when I was living in L.A. I would go to Kings games and root for them. Since they are in completely different divisions and may play each other once a year (unless they're both in the cup) I would root for the Bruins then.
However if I moved to NYC I would not root for the Rangers but would consider being an Islanders fan (even though they suck) just because they're in another division. However home team always comes first.
