Good stuff Mike. And it might be a good idea to start CBillz in the bullpen to see how things go and if his arm will hold up.
Kershaw, Grienke, Beckett, Ryu, Lilly
League, Jansen, Belisario, Howell, Gurrier, CBillz, Capuano
With Harang around to sub for any injury, and we know it's almost impossible to pick 12 guys for a staff and expect everyone to open a season healthy.
This is why I think it's almost likely they won't make a trade. With Elbert likely to start the season on the DL, I think they can stash two starters on the 25-man who aren't in the rotation and start somebody on the DL, Lilly or Billingsley.
It might be a good idea to start slow with Billingsley and let him be one of the starters who throws out of the pen at the start of the year. Two-inning appearances here and there.
SP-Kershaw, Grienke, Beckett, Ryu, Capuano
RP-League, Jansen, Belisario, Howell, Guerrier, Billingsley, Harang
Might switch Capuano and Harang to add a lefty out of the pen, although Harang seems a lot better suited for swing work than Capuano would be.
I think from everything we are hearing the Dodgers are doing everything they can to absorb a bad contract to lower the price where they can get what they want. We have high goals, an impact starting pitcher, an impact bat at a corner IF spot, and a LH reliever. Without prospects to get that done, the only other way in the current market is to eat a bad contract.
Go to the Marlins. Offer to take all of Heath Bell's gross ugly deal in order to lower the price dramatically for Hanley and/or Johnson. I know nobody would want Bell's deal, or probably not Bell on any deal for that matter, but if that's what it takes to get what we need, then do it.
Bell gets back on the West Coast in a set-up role, maybe he turns it around. Hanley would have something to prove and maybe Kemp can mentor him (who thought we'd say that five years ago, eat your heart out Jeff Kent!). And Josh Johnson a Dodger.....that would be soooooooo awesome!
You think some of ya'll are upset about the potential Lee for Garza deal, wait until the average Cubs fan gets a load of Lee's AA stats. You mean we are trading for a guy who has an ERA higher than 9 in AA???? I thought Theo was a genius!
Remember this potential deal would be with the Cubs, so it likely would turn out Cuberific!
I'm not sure why Garza is a good get for us. We already have 5 SP on a contract for next season and if Hamels doesn't sign with the Phillies, we'll most likely sign him. If he doesn't, I'd think we'd be big on Greinke.
@Danny H The more I think about it, the more I think this is exactly what Colletti is up to. He's in the opposite situation that he was in a few years ago. He wants to take on as much salary as possible without giving up prospects. But, the Cubs don't have to move Dempster's salary, so how would Colletti convince them to take lesser prospects? By taking more and more of Soriano's contract off their hands.
@Mike Petriello Looking at the names, there really wasn't a lot of value going either way. 10-player deal sounds great, but it'd be like us sending Sands, Guerra, Sanchez, Tolleson, De Jesus, Herrerra, and Withrow for Dempster, Soriano (and bunches of money), and LaHair. Hmmmm.
@Mike Petriello I hope we get to face Sanchez in Colorado. Even our offense would light things up in that situation. As for the Royals, that has the potential to be a great deal fixing what was a bad deal.
@Mike Petriello @RealTom Yeah, but the Cubs could eat a good part of the deal in 13 and 14. Going into the season, they'd have had to eat most all of it to move him. Now with a team like us needing power and him showing power this year, we might be willing to take on $5 mill per as long as we don't have give up any prospect of value.
@Deuce I hadn't thought of it that way. I think a change of scenery would to Loney wonders. If he went to an offensive park, I think he'd have a chance to resurrect his career.
I think a change of scenery would do Uribe wonders as well. If he went to New York and started training for that hot dog eating title, he'd be a champ in no time.
@Mike Petriello There is a guy named Carlos Perez, and if you click on the name on MLB Traderumors, it gives you the profile of the former Dodger pitcher who destroyed the water cooler. I'm pretty sure he wasn't included in the deal.
Ooops. I didn't even discuss the corner IF thing. I favor going "all in" on Headley. Not because he's make a massive difference this year, but I could see filling the 1B hole in a number of ways going forward. Perhaps Adam LaRoche signs in the off-season, or maybe they move Ethier to 1B. I'm sure Ethier would be much better defensively than Rivera at 1B, so give him an off-season to learn the position and fill it that way. There are OF bats that could be signed for the big bat at that point.
But, there is NOTHING on the horizon that fills the enormous hole at 3B in our organization. At 1B, you might even "hope" for Van Slyke to put it together or some other prospect to get things going. We have ZERO at 3B, and there are no free agents to sign.
Headley would be a help this year and he'd be huge to have going forward. Zach Lee, Javy Guerra, Chris Reed and Jerry Sands. Get them to throw in a lefty reliever to off-set the overpay and call it a day.
BTW, I assuming there is no way Lee is in the Dempster offer since he's a rental.
As for what we trade for, it's obvious we have to have a corner IF bat. I totally get that Loney is dropped to a completely unacceptable level, but I made the mistake of looking at the Dodgers' message board yesterday, and I just absolutely don't get why he's hated way more than Uribe. Of the two "evils" why is the guy who came up through the Dodgers' system worse than the former Giant who signed a hugely overpaid contract?
How....ironic I guess is the word I'm looking for...would it be if we trade for a pitcher who will be hoping will NOT go 20+ innings without giving up a run?
There is a definite positive to this line-up. Like Sam said, this is Uribe's last stand. Him batting eighth in this line-up proves Mattingly is as sick of him as we are....well, close to as sick. He's now hitting under .200 and his OPS is about .550. There can't be much patience left. I never condone pulling against a Dodger, but a Uribe 0-4 would have a nice silver lining to it.
I forgot. Us trading for Dempster is such a foregone conclusion that I've just accepted that it will happen. So that's 4, maybe 5, moves.
Kershaw, Billingsley, Dempster, Capuano, Harang, Jansen, Linblom, Belisario, Guerra, Elbert, Wright, and LH pick-up
Ellis, Headley, Kemp, Ethier, 1B pick-up, Abreu, Ellis, Cruz or other defensive SS, Treanor, Hairston, Loney, Rivera, Gwynn
Mike, I've got us making four trades, but other than Headley, who would be the big acquistion, I'm not sure who else we pick up. I think we've got to find an adequate SS filler, although having to make the other moves, maybe they just figure Cruz can provide adequate defense, which is all I'd be looking to acquire any way. So, OK, make it 3.
Headley, a first baseman and one more veteran reliever that you just know Colletti will pick up. The veteran reliever could be any one of a cast of a thousand characters as the need there is more about depth than real quality. I'm half expecting them to pick up Fuentes any day now, which for the league minimum might be worth a shot.
I just don't have a clue who the 1B will be. I can't stand the Red Sox, so I wasn't all that excited about picking up their poster boy for Red Soxsyness, but it'd sure be nice to have him at 3B until we could have traded for Headley and then move him to 1B.
I do see us DFA'ing both Kennedy and Uribe. If we make the trade for a 1B, Loney could replace Kennedy as the LH bat off the bench, and cutting Kennedy is no real big cost. As for Uribe, I mean really, once you hit a certain level or horribleness, you just gotta go. I mean, you just GOTTA!!!!!!
@DavePomerantz The person who put that list together should be ashamed of themselves, and to correct their obvious error, they should name the team the Juan Uribe Team. He's the worst anything you want to call him.
@JohnM @West Coast Ram I am literally, figuratively and every other way the biggest Billingsley fan there is, but CBillz and something for Castellanos and Young?
@Mike Petriello @West Coast Ram Yeah, he's not ready just yet, but it'd be a good get for sure. Now, my head is starting to hurt trying to figure out a way this works. Ahhh the agony!
By the way, what's a guy gotta do to get points around here? I had 6 at one point but now I ain't got none!
