Good piece. Without disagreeing with the central thesis of the piece one of the topics of the papers by Shinichi Mochizuki that you quote is "Arithmetic Elliptic Curves", looking at his website and the papers he has published on the topic (2008-2012) they are fairly theoretically minded but elliptic curves are used extensively in cryptography. Not evidence of bitcoin provenance, but still should be corrected.
@JohnFrankel @jrmyhdgs I've looked at a few of these home automation systems and if you really can nail the UX and have a decent API for the tinkerer, then I guess I'll have to be buying one soon.
Is it ironic that the link to Exablox's website is showing "Error establishing a database connection" or has PandoDaily just slashdotted them?
This is well written. I would have thought that Paul Carr would have flown off the handle on this one, but this is a good defence of his growing business. Well done.

I don't know how I missed this article the first time round, I found it today thanks to the "3 related articles" feature, but this is well written, important, and bang on. As always from Francisco Dao.

I'd also add, taking classes that aren't directly related to your degree can make you a more rounded person and better at your job, even if that job is COMSC related.
You raise interesting points in this article, good analysis as always, but I think the recent plateau is more to do with Intel and AMD developing more multi-core processors while the software industry as a whole for consumer applications has not caught up and is not using the full power of multi threaded software.

I find it really weird that one of Paul Carr's least angry and rant like of posts should cause so many people to personally attack him. This was a well written piece that actually went straight to the heart of the issue, anti gouging laws, and even pointed out the main counter argument around supply and demand and successfully rebutted it. Being a social responsible person in a business, especially in a startup with limited cash flow, is a complex issue and this was an interesting article.
@PierreFrench I for one prefer my tech news with a bit of personality instead of just a rehashed press release. If you don't then then that's fine, and I would suggest one of the many other sites on the web.
