@eclecticsandra  @stobberdobber  @Simon1 Sandra, the years I spent at a state university were the most dogmatic years of my life. There were plenty of people who "looked" different but almost everyone **thought** the exact same things! And if they didn't you'd never know it because they would chew their tongue off before saying so.

My advisor was a closet conservative. I busted him with a WSJ one day and we started chatting about the day's op-ed. It didn't take long to figure out where he stood, but in classes I'd have never, ever guessed. I asked him about the seeming disconnect and he told me that if word ever got around, he'd lose his dean position real quick. Of course I was never afraid to speak my mind (you'd have never guessed, right? ;-) ) and maybe five percent of my fellow students fell on my side of the thought process. He and I had a great time ripping the NYT to intellectual shreds--but only in the safety of his office, behind closed doors. I could speak my mind and do twice the work to make sure the profs couldn't take my As, but my advisor would have no recourse and he had a family to feed.

So I don't fall for the diversity argument. The only human quality that matters--thought--is the most rigidly regulated and conformed human quality on any university campus in the country. How sad is that?

@eclecticsandra  @BertDilbert Sandra, the word "gentleman" is used frequently in my family and my neighborhood for an older man who is respected in the community. There's no code there at all.

@snapsbacula  @melgoldstone Here's Newton's sled team website. http://www.jamaicadogsled.com/ I'd forgotten he also came in 13th in the Yukon Quest--a race some say is more difficult than the Iditarod.

@snapsbacula  @melgoldstone Well Snaps, I don't know about that. I worked in Summit County Colorado for years during the ski season and I did see black folks skiing. Not nearly as many as other races (who knew Arabs were so into skiing?) but some black folks do enjoy it.

I also know that a black guy from Jamaica has been running the Iditarod for several years and does it pretty well. He came in middle of the pack last year. It's actually a pretty cool story.

@Simon1 Between the OWS nuts, the Riot for Trayvon nuts, and the random unassociated nuts one would think Apple had worked on security measures BEFORE the stores were constructed. This summer is going to be replete with mobs doing mob actions, I think.

@Rowwdy I certainly hope no  one mistakes me for a legal professional, because I'm not! In my layman's understanding of the system setup the prosecutor is an extension of the state. I have no doubt that case law has upended things. And I have no problem with requiring the defense to share information as well, it just isn't codified like the prosecutor's responsibilities regarding discovery--at least as far as I know.

This case is providing a lot of education on the workings of the justice system,

@Indverif  @Andybinga The prosecution's responsibilities as a representative of the state are quite different than the responsibilities of the defense. Note that the law specified the time frame in which PROSECUTORS are required to turn over evidence to the defense. There is no such requirement for the defense.

The prosecutor is an arm of a very powerful state or federal government. The defense does NOT have the power and resources of the state at his/her disposal. HUGE difference.

@dan123123123 Possibly, Dan. Something I've wondered about, and this is pure speculation--if DeeDee actually was on the phone with TM and he told her he was high-tailing it home, might she have berated him for allowing himself to be "dissed"? Might she have insulted him or insinuated cowardice or some such thing, and then he went back to "prove" himself? This would also account for DeeDee keeping her mouth shut afterward--she doesn't want to be the dumbass who egged TM on to his death.

Like I said, pure speculation on my part. After reading the Twitter accounts for TM and many of those on his followers/following list I have to wonder, though. It seems all of them are doing three things throughout the day: seeking sex, doing/seeking drugs, and bragging about committing violence on someone somewhere.

<shrug> Short of a successful seance we'll never know why TM turned around and went after GZ but it's a topic ripe for speculation.

************************************

Trayvon Martin, 17, was visiting family members in Sanford when he was shot to death by a man at a convenience store on Monday night.

The teen walked into the store to buy ice cream and Skittles. He had $22 in his pocket.

About 100 feet from the building, Martin was confronted by an armed man who shot him dead, said his uncle Ronald Fulton, who lived with the teen. There were no witnesses.

Sanford police identified the suspect as George Zimmerman, 25. He has been questioned, but no charges have been filed nor an arrest made.

Martin’s viewing was Friday night in South Florida.

@melgoldstone OMG they are NOT out there spouting off about the "social issues." How about the family dynamics at work in your own sphere? Nah--any "social issue" has to involve government having more control over average people and--of course--more money.
