I think Abreu will replace Kennedy soon. I also think Elbert will be on a short leash if Rice continues to pitch well in AAA. Coffey will be DL or DFA when Guerrier comes off the DL and Wright goes when Hawksworth comes back. Treanor is just a back up and just needs to show up to give Ellis a day off now and then, maybe get a hit or two when he does play.
I would like to see Uribe and Rivera hit the DL and call up Van Slyke and Fields to see what they are capable of before the trading deadline. If Fields can't do the job and Uribe continues to be Uribe, maybe look to trade for David Wright, Chase Headley, Chris Johnson or Kyle Seager to play third.
Not sure what to do with Loney, if he can hit like he did in 2008-09 and late 2011 ride it out. If he continues like he is, look at Morneau, Dunn, Matt Carpenter Youklis and Konerko. Gwynn is mainly a late inning defensive replacement and spot starter.
Guerra is relying on his fastball too much and needs to throw his curve and slider more when he's ahead in the count. Against Atlanta all the hits were on 2 strike fastballs, against Colorado used his offspeed pitches and closed them out.
I do hope that whatever needs arise they are aggressive in filling that need is.
Either way, kudos to Ned Colletti (or whomever may have made this call) for doing the right thing. I agree not sure if Colletti or Kasten made the call but it is promising to see a move based on the best player and not worried about a guaranteed contract. Are you listening Adam Kennedy. We may be seeing Rice fairly soon if Elbert doesn't get straightened out.
Not that Abreu is going to set the world on fire, but at this stage of his career he's a far better signing than Anderso, Velez or Kennedy were. He's a 2 maybe 3 games a week stater and primary pinch hitter.
@SCruzDodgersThat and having Kennedy hit then put Sellars in. I would have rather seen Loney take a shot in Coors its the only place he hits like a real firs tbaseman
Most of the time I like Mattingly as a manager, but he gave an exhibition of what not to do in that innig.
It looked like he was finally trusting his stuff and not nibbling at the corners and challenging hitters. The generous strike zone helped but he was around the plate and not wild.
