@Geemom Why don't people say that when Sharapova plays Jie Zheng whom he seems to always have to play since 2008 and Cilbukova.  Every time Serena play someone 5'4, she's considered a much larger opponent.  Sharapova is not a small woman and towers over everyone, give it a break.  Last year Sharapova played little Sara Errani, not one mention of Davey v. Goliath.  Give it a break.

@Patrick of La Verne  @ann18 But the article is not about Serena, she is just mentioned in the headlines to get attention. If they are only talking about Rafa or Fed, why mention Serena? Just talk about rafa or Fed, people will still read the article.

It's difficult to say if it's racist  but WTA has no respect.  They are going with what they think the world wants to see.  But I blame this solely on American Tennis, Serena is the best in the world but she doesn't get nearly the acknowledgment as the others do even if they don't play.  However, Serena is a cut above the rest.  She lets her racket do the talking.  I can't wait for Venus to join her and start winning more too.

LOL, Fedini, have a heart but she ill learn a lot too.  Djorkovic got started when he beat the French - strong team in 2010 and has not looked back so maybe joinging the Sisters will be great for Sloane and Lepchenko.  I am more than shocked that Huber isn't playing too.  Go USA!

Guest12345 It's called looking for something to say.  This video coming out will address why Venus and Serena became who they are.  Never has any other tennis player faced what they faced.  Chandra Rubin is black but she was never a threat to win a Grand Slam so she was accepted as ok, Lori McNeal, Katherina Adams, Zina Garrison and others felt the prejudiceness but they too were not as successful and didn't dare go are far in their complaintl;  however when Serena and Venus both started pouring it on and bringing in a new style etc and winning, people resented that. As a defense they started showing they aren't going to go away and had to earn their respect.  I remember Chris Evert being so angry about what some of the players were saying and calling the Sisters that she told Venus to call them names back and Venus said we weren't raised that way.  But when Zina Garrison and other blacks were barred from playing on the practice courts, neither Chris Evrett, Martina Nav, Mary Carillo, Pam Sherivera, Billy J. King nor Steffi Graf stood up for them.  These younger players have accepted them and have a little respect for them so there is no jealousy or lingering animosity but the players of a decade ago or 25 years go, they felt those girls didn't belong.  Ask about the name calling they had to endure.  Lots of people  don't know the entire story like you said but tennis wouldn't be as popular as it is now were it not for Venus and Serena sticking it out and making people apreciate their play.  Just like Jackie Robinson, he let his bat do the talking but there were plenty of other black baseball players long before Jackie who played much better than him but literally got beat up or killed trying to play ball.  So, this hatred we read isn't anything knew it's just a shame it still exist in 2013.People can't look at a whole picture if it's been cut off.  Most people don't know that other black players existed before the Williams Sisters so they don't see their remarks as being prejudice and think we get offended everytime someone talks against the Sisters, but those of us who know how truly far Venus and Serena have come, can express our thoughts and knowledge too.  And the commentator on ESPN Cliff Drysdale he too has had his not so nice things to say when Arthur Ashe was beating him many moons ago.  You'll never hear him speak about that.  He's so desperate he's resolved to going along with petty talk to keep a job, what a shame and certainly, certainly not the acts of an Australian or South African gentleman or wherever he's from.

Exactly. They make a moutain out of a mole, it's really a shame.  This is the best player to play in almost 20 years and she can't get a break.  Not even WTA respects her.  After losing the FO in the 1st round, she went on a tear, brought back viewers to tennis that had left, won two more GS, Olympics plus the year-end WTA Championship and her reward from WTA, Sharapova appearing on WTA 40 Love.  What an insult to Azarenka too.  I mean give me a break!  Now she ends something that JJ started and eople want to ostracize her like it's her fault.  This woman can't win for losing. LISTEN PEOPLE, IT IS THE MEDIA TRYING TO STIR THINGS UP TO GET MORE ATTRACTION TO WOMEN'S TENNIS.  THE TENNIS PLAYERS, SERENA AND JELENA ARE FINE.  Notice how when the crowd was acknowledging Jelena, Serena clapped too yet that is mentioned in a sentence or more like a footnote and no one, no one seems to repeat that.  All Serena said was "you have to wait untl I'm ready; Really, you have a problem with that?"  in reply.  Jelena, having to have the last word, responded when she could have taken the high road, since she's suppose to be so classy, but didn't and how about Jelena's  horrible response tto her brother, when her brother told her to relax no she was giving him the thumps out and then down, what was that all about?  She's known to complain and to be nasty to her brother but -oh, that's not a topic for discussion is it?  Give it a break people.  Please.

@WillieScrapes  @topspinner  Thank you WillieScrapes.  It's really sad how everyone is picking on this little incident to get off on Serena.  They are all drama queens and we need to see when it's being played and when it's not.  The coversation was nothing show of nothing but all these comments coming out that have nothing to do with what really happened show how people really feel, maybe this is why tennis is not being exploited as well as it should be.  All these comments whether racial or not, do nothing, absolutely nothing to promote tennis.  It was a very good game and at the end of the day, I enjoyed the tennis.

One thing I like about Serena is she is not going to cheat to get a point.  She hates lying and fabricating and cheating.  What JJ did was within her right to do.  How Serena responded was within her right too but after the handshake, I didn't go away feeling like they waere going to have further words in the locker room.  Unfortuately, unless you taped the game, you will never know. as it's not re-airing on ESPN and TC doesn't have rights to it.
