He is all but gone from Detroit. While in America you never saw his wife or child. When he got divorced his x-wife left with the daughter fast. This was a mutual decision. Datsyuk goes "home" every summer. Home is not Detroit. In direct contrast to when in America, while playing in Russia he gave interviews on TV WITH his daughter.  He simply does not want his daughter in American schools. Or involved with all the grief of being the kid of a professional athlete here. Nicklas Lidström had similar issues. When his sons got to be high school age they went to Sweden and stayed with his sister. The differance in the situations is Datsyuk's kid lives in Russia. He has endless class and will never disrespect the Red Wings organization but the fact is he is all but done and sooner then later. Look for it to happen like Lidström's retirement. Announces his retirement, four days later is the kids last day of school, eight days later he is in Sweden and has been back one time for a few days. Bye it's been fun LATER.  Been a Red Wings fan for years (as David knows). One thing I cant stress enough about the European and Russian players. They are respectful and respect the opportunity offered. They rarely wish to stay and often struggle with staying. They don't view it as a bonus to be here and ALWAYS want to go home. Also in the last 5-7 years schooling here (for the ones with kids) is becoming a huge issue. They simply keep it real quiet because the would get hammered with the political fall out from saying it publicly.

@miendiem  @David Rogers "Few teams have to deal with an entire line being lost over the course of a couple weeks".  In the first 24 games Detroit averaged 6 guys out every game. An entire line sounds kinda good to some of us. I was convinced the wings had no change of making the playoffs. Glad I kept it to myself mostly. The level of play across the board has been dismal this year.  The short season the rush to start. The quality has simply not been there for the most part.

If you have to penalize this hit, then you might as well turn it into "flag" hockey. Your guy turned around right into the guys shoulder. It's getting to the point in Hockey anytime a player gets hurt people scream hit to the head. Then you have guys like Sidney Crosby. That everyone is afraid to hit because they know he has a weak bell on him and will be out for months. Hockey is starting to look like 5 NFL quarterbacks running around no one can hit.  Your assertion "Olver’s elbow was up, which could be deemed dangerous" is extremely weak. He simply brought his arm across the front of him. What was he going to do lead with his face?  You also say  "a hit to the head is a hit to the head". If that's the case I guess it time to change it to women's lingerie hockey and make hitting illegal. Last time the Wings played the Blues we had SEVEN guys hurt. The commentators on NBC sports said on air "if you want to know Detroit's injured list pull it up on-line there is to much to read here ha ha". I never said a word about it. Now one of you good players get hurt and you write a Black / white piece? The "a hit to the head is a hit to the head" logic. Please   Methinks in this case you need to work on your "without bias" part.

@David Rogers  @miendiem Well I assume you did not watch the game with Detroit commentators. I will add they agree with your assessment. The first two power plays for the blues were head scratchers. For God sakes the second one a Blues player stepped on a Wings stick and some how it became tripping. The one on Backes it took about two seconds for them to say "Hey Tootoo did the same thing 5 minutes ago and it was not a penalty".  No one like an inconsistent game. I would love to gloat with the win. I will settle for at least we bothered to show up this time.

Blues chief operating officer Bruce Affleck says some of the layoffs will be permanent - a decision made by the team's new owners. Now John Davidson? This is a corporate downsizing by the new owners. They just put a "lockout dress" on it to make it look better.

@David Rogers  @miendiem David I invested 8 years at one company. It's now a parking lot.  Then I invested 10 at another. It's now an empty building. Trust me I do understand. In my case we are talking years not months. However, I am no victim.

I pulled myself up and changed the way I do business. Neither were my "fault". I do understand very well!

From experience I can guarantee you one thing.

If in your mind you can justify feeling like a victim, Your feeling sorry for yourself and blaming someone else.

I choose to not feel sorry for myself and keep my tools very portable. Having a full understanding that in 2012 tomorrow is no guarantee.  Victim psychology helps no one.

@miendiem  As normal your much more politically correct then I am. Nonetheless the vast majority of the million people in Michigan who lost there job were not  terminated for poor performance either.

My feeling is, we have become a society fixated with victim psychology. It does us no favors. Because by default if there is a victim there is a victimizer. Thus someone to blame other then oneself.

Anyone who works for a NHL team post 2004 is well aware of the job "risks". One needs to take responsibility for that and be prepared. It's that simple really.

This is a reality of 2012 not just in hockey but in life. What you make today is no guarantee for tomorrow. Who you work for today is no guarantee for tomorrow.

The sooner folks realize that and adjust there behavior. The better off they will be. The victim card is old, over used and quickly becoming pathetic. IMO

Victim? That's a little thick. I grow increasingly tired of the oppressed and oppressor all the time.   You choose to work for a professional sports team. They are not playing. you don't work.  You choose to be a farmer and the weather is bad. You don't work. You choose to work for the auto industry. They are not selling cars. You get less hours. Does that make everyone a victim by default?

Why is it no matter what. When ever anyone faces the least little bit of hardship they are either oppressed or a victim. Considering oppressed and victim mean virtually the same thing? Did I miss the line where they were handing out the "stress free no change or hardship" guarantees when I was born?

Here is a justifiable reason for you. Life is hard..... Deal with it......there are no guarantees.....put your big boy pants on people. Every time something hard happens it does not make you a victim by default.

"disrupt so many families for no reason is disgraceful." The blues just like any other NHL team have around 100 front office employes. In the big picture that's virtually nothing.

Forgive me I come from a state that has lost a MILLION middle class jobs in the last ten years. Not 20. The difference is we don't consider yourselves victims.

@David Rogers  @miendiem I said here before "it should be noted Colaiacovo has played 60+ games the past four seasons. I don't find that injury prone at all. Similar to Kronwall." Perhaps that's a luxury I have had I don't appreciate.  The ability to call up players for a short time to cover holes. I am not saying that the players in Grand Rapids are great or as good as Detroit. However, there are always a couple D men there that can come fill in for a game or two and not be a bullet to the head. The same was said about Kronwall when he struggled to a lesser extent early on in his career to stay healthy.  All things said I think Detroit is better with him, we will see.

@miendiem  @David Rogers I would call it the least bad choice. Certainly nothing I am excited about. Also at a little over two mill a year they all but labeled him a 2ad 3rd line fill in.  Krownwall,Quincey, White, Ericsson are all making more then that for Detroit. It's a cheep band aid.  Prolly second, third line with some power play time for scoring. Role player and a decent one at that but nothing that's going to cure Detroit's issues. I have been wrong before but it's not earth shattering. With the current situation and low price the blues matching the offer would not surprise me at all. it should be noted Colaiacovo has played 60+ games the past four seasons. I don't find that injury prone at all. Similar to Kronwall. I see it as a replacement for Kronwall after he moves to the first line. Labeling it an improvement might be too optomisitc.

@David Rogers  @miendiem Matt Greene graduated High school from my small home town. They are having a parade on Friday. I figure it it's literally going to be two blocks from my house I will go see it. However, I would have much preferred to have to drive to Detroit 2 hours away to have seen it again.

@David Rogers OK.........This subject makes me very very angry. For my ranting on your blog I am sorry. This is not the place for it. I should have simply noted my dissatisfaction with your comment and left it at that.  For that I apologize. The hockey blog and twitter are not necessarily attached at the hip. I am sorry David I know to much on this topic.

What have the Penguins done to warrant being twice as likely to win? What has Detroit or Chicago done to be just as likely as the Blues to win?  The wild had the best record in the NHL last year early on and added two huge players and are 20-1? Give me some dice and a super sized Slurpee,  I could prolly do as well as this list.
