@abodenha - Thank you for the comment. I admit, I too had my notions going into the meetup, but I was more amazed at how many people were car people or were just really in love with the brand. Not once did I hear someone say "Oh yeah, not going to the gas station and saving money is great."
This lead me to my conclusion that this is a very well-built, beautifully designed luxury car no different than a 7-series or S-Class - only that this one is electric.

@sastexan I heard back from the dealer and he apologized and explained to me the situation. One employee was dealing with personal health issues of a loved one while another was trying to work. Understandable situation, but still not the best face to put forward to your customers.

@StuWilliams @brian_guy I rarely if EVER get on the highway during my 9-5 Mon-Fri commute. On the highway the car does fine, but cold starts and cold drives keeps those fuel injectors wide open. I'm at 21MPG right now.

@derelicte78 @boddagettaflyer I've tried everything. The hardest part is my wife is worthless (sorry honey) when it comes to helping me track down sounds and riding shotgun. She can't drive a stick and is basically deaf. I need to take the service advisor for a ride so he can hash it out. It almost sounds like its coming from the wheel well the more I listen to it. I'll update this once I know more!
@eappleton1 @brian_guy HA! I'd still highly recommend the car, just buy it in the base form. Pick up X-plan pricing via a Focus group walk away with a quick little hatch for around the $22-23 mark OTD. Can't really beat it. LIke Brian said, toss in some aftermarket seat(s) and track the shit out of it.
@derelicte78 They are up to 3.5.2 now I believe. I'll be taking in it for the upgrade though. Hopefully that resolves the issues.
@Bill what The code was related to the fuel neck, but was also related to the sound synthesizer in the intake. I don't think they ever figured out why the intake was throwing a code, but it didn't come back. SYNC works great. My wife has SYNC in her Fusion and we've never had a problem with it. I would have loved an ST packaged car that was SYNC, HIDs and Recaros. That would be my ideal combo.
@brian_guy @hwild68 The error stays on when you put it in gear (no D as all STs are manuals). Hence the annoyance of driving around with a big error on your screen.
@brian_guy That's exactly what I should have done. Lesson learned.
@StuWilliams If I had to do this all over again - I would go ST1. I think 90% of the people who read this missed the part where I highly recommend/love the driving dynamics of the car. They also probably didn't see the bigger writeup I did over at Hooniverse when I first got the car. I also did a nice write up here when I did the Focus ST academy. So in the end, I agree 100% - this thing is just awesome. I don't think we'll be parting ways anytime soon, but the letter was nice satire.
@boddagettaflyer Thanks. I'm just going to drop it off at the dealer and have them try and track down the loose piece on the door and also see if they can get the backseat tightened. There is quite a bit of play in the 60 part of the 60/40 spilt. Seeing that my 15month old rides back there, I'd prefer it be snug.
@Pendarus @Vipergtsrgt1 - They finally learned that my overflow valve was missing/broken. Either way, fuel was going down the neck and also out of the valve onto the ground. I've owned and drive enough cars to know how not to overfill them.
@hwild68 Very good point. But if I don't look at the screen, how will I know that my finger in the right place to press the OK button to remove the full-screen error message? This would be helpful if I wanted to do something else, like select a radio station or not see the full-screen error message.
@hwild68 You see, the thing is, the fuel was leaking from the neck and the car was E, which means it had no fuel in it.

@StephanieBarnett While the insurance industry is one incentive mechanism, I think states and other groups have to start rewarding people who go years without accidents as well. Maybe a discounted property tax rate or earned credits for future moving violation. (Thinking out loud here)

@jackiespiegle I admit at first I laughed, then I started to listen. "Vanners are enthusiasts to" is what I walked away thinking. I did a 180 from my chucking to "hell yeah!" I hoep this documentary gets published. I for sure will do my part to share it with the automotive community.

@BrycePhillips Exactly! Everything I've ever heard about vans is creepy, family or work. Never would I associate vans with fun, bonding or an enthusiast lifestyle. Boy o boy was I wrong! I hope this video gains more traction and people will begin to give vanners the credit they are due. But like you said, that isn't a requirement for wheels (and captain's chair) to keep on turning in the Vanning culture. Cheers! Juan

I think for some, myself included, I had no idea. I have long been a Corvette guy. Know all the slang words, aftermarket tricks and know to wave at other Corvettes. @MaxKats88 Thanks for kind words, Max. I think it comes down to connecting the word of mouth, a strong and powerful tool for moving brand sentiment, to content.
Think of it like this. You have an audience of brand ambassadors. They are eager and willing to spread the good word. You have their undivided attention. What do you do with that? Feed them content. Not just any content, but content that they will run to their consumer publishing circles and spread.
Once automakers recognize the value of consumer publishing (word of mouth, shares, RT, etc) and place their publishing reach as a collective on the same scale as they do standard publications, then a reason will exists to produce Red Bull-like content. Until then, consumers will play second fiddle to communication’s teams.

@hamiltonian - I did this to get a good idea of what black will look like on the car. I agree. Gloss black OEM wheels is the way to go, via powdercoating. I first need to find a set of stock Focus wheels to sit this on so I can have the stock wheels coated.

@hamiltonian - No. The wheels on this car are the result of a DIY driveway project (i.e. PlastiDip and caliper paint). In Europe, if I recall correctly, the car can be had with a darker more steel-colored wheels. Almost a graphite color.

GM's marketing message is being questioned in each brand. I'm glad I could highlight one small example. I'm sure as it gets close to the holidays we'll see what GM does for pushing metal.

@Al D What is going to be very telling and will serve as a final TRUE data point is to look at 2011 vs 2012 fatality data, accounting for overall natural reduction in deaths due to safety advancements, and compare side-by-side the number of deaths caused by 'distracted effected' driving while overlaying states with robust laws.
I don't mean to sound as if I'm not concerned with crashes, I'm just focused on fatalities because it is the measure to which NHTSA determines success.

@Al D - I agree. It is a problem, but I don't think its a behavioral change that we can fix with a law. Like you said, seat belt laws have been on the books for years and we still have 10,000 people a year killed not wearing one. If we made laws against distracted driving I assume the enforcement level would be even less than seat belts. This gets back to my point of needing a technological solution that will keep us all from running into one another. Cell phone, person stretching or dropped donut - whatever in our car distracts us, active crash avoidance will help us not smash into one another.

The seats really were the only part of the Soul that could use improvement. If I had to find something else to complain about, it would be the center console compartment. That latch is very oddly designed. You have to pull it towards you, but also push it away and pull up. I smashed my fingers a few times in it.

First off kittens are always a win. Headlines, content or eCards - a kitten is a victory regardless of the application.
Secondly, it seems the driving force behind much of the rush to adoption isn't the I-need-to-be-first but more the ooooo-whats-that. It reminds me of those little squeaky aliens in Toy Story watching and chanting for the claw to choose them. In this case that claw is the next 'thing' in social media.

@AngiHarper For example, I love the service provided by my local Caddy dealership. I like them on Facebook as a way to say 'Thank you'. Do I need to get their updates about whats going on with Cadillac the company? Not really. Maybe I'm in the minority, but if I prefer to see updates from a very close group of friends and not from brands.
I took my response above and turned it into a post over at my site. Basically asking, could FB have sub-brand pages that were purchase-verified? This would create a new data point, likes vs likes + conversion for FB advertisers and brands. Brands could transition from an acquisition voice to a retention voice in that specific silo while FB could more accurately determine if the user had already converted with said liked brand.

Every time I like a brand on Facebook the first thing I do is hide them in my news feed. That is another piece of data I would like to see. What percentage of brand messages show up in user’s news feeds?
So what is my like worth then? It gives Facebook awareness of my brand preferences, but if the past is in any indication of Facebook’s ability to use that data to target ads…well then it REALLY has no value.
But if people don’t interact with brands and hide their updates from their feeds – then all Facebook has is a brand preference data set, which isn’t nearly as valuable as the data credit card companies and banks already have. Their data, unlike Facebook’s, is wallet-endorsed. That is banks and credit card companies know where you’ve spent your money and what you’ve bought. Facebook just knows you like a brand.
Because I like Ferrari on Facebook, doesn’t mean I own or could ever own a Ferrari. Owning a Ferrari would provide marketers with insight into my buying power and taste. If Facebook ever chooses to use their data correctly to target, they first need to find a way to make it more valid.
Closed brand pages. That really is the only way to do it. These pages are only accessible after making a purchase with a brand. Owners would get an exclusive code for entry into the page (Genesis support forums work this way). It would have to be sold as exclusive club for TRUE brand aficionados and owners and offer closed, private and targeted discussion between brands and consumers.
The end result – a data point that has value. Juan OWNS a Ferrari vs. Juan LIKES a Ferrari.
@Verilliance - I feel like people enjoy Pinterest partly due to its discovery attributes as you indicated by using the word "find new products." There has been more recent discussion regarding the hyper-targeting vs random ad and its effect on buyer conversion. Would it be safe then to assume that Pinterest's randomness is exactly what makes it effective at discovery conversions (if that's a term)?

Great read. I recently started using Pinterest to generate traffic to my site and will continue to watch what actions people take. Because of the discovery aspect of it though I've had to rethink my image use for each post.
Also LOL at @JayBaer 's "You can't eat a click" That has digital marketing t-shirt written all over it, literally.
As an automotive blogger, buying a car is an especially hard process for me. You are typically bombarded by auto responders (Like Jay said, its just software). Then it happened. I got an email back from a human. A real life human. Turned out that person was the general manager of a local Ford store. We talked at length why HE felt the need to respond to me. Bottom line, he believed that no one, not even his sales staff, understood the importance of human-on-human interaction. He went further to say that all inbound leads are personally answered by him and that is how he spends 90% of his day. He says he loves it. And as a customer, I loved it. So much so that I bought two cars from him.
That is what machines, programs and even pure-play agencies will not do for you and that is connect you to the consumer. Sometimes thats all the consumer wants, to feel loved. Robots are cold and don't do love well.

I bet that same marketing executive will have that same look of terror when sitting in front of the company's decision makers.
These 5 tips will without a doubt produce appealing nuggets o' content, captivating your listeners and generating responses like "Wow! I didn't know that" or "Cooooool." The major obstacle, only second to cultivating the content, is getting it past the risk-adverse gatekeepers know only as corporate leadership.
As pointed out in this week's episode of Mitch Joel's Six Pixels of Separation - 'businesses have a fear factor when it comes to releasing information'. It's this fear factor that can be a larger impediment to good content.
So for this post to be more-perfect, rather than saying the marketing executive has decided to do social business, maybe declare that the company's leadership made the decision.
Semantics I know, but a very important aspect of culture conversion. As always, great info.

Regarding culture, I just finished up the lastest Beancast episode where the group went into a long discussion about culture as it relates to creating special moments that result in engaging content. If you haven't listened to it yet, you should!
As for culture at my organization...I've spent years working in PR-like positions within the Department of Defense. I can say as a whole our military does not, nor will they ever have, a culture that lends itself to developing talk triggers. The military is a very risk-adverse organization and has trouble separating the battlefield mentality from the normal noncombat day-to-day activities.
PS - @jaybaer Sorry for steering people away from here and over to the Beancast, but it was a great episode and relevant to this discussion.
Solis - Superb piece. I especially like that finally someone is talking about the differentiation of strategy based on the programming. The same character driven audience connection that you might have with a Mad Men, is different than what you'll have with a larger sporting event or award show.
Personally, I want to see (and I keep pushing for this) programming that lets me decide/vote. Think American Idol meets Lost.
Instead of voting a participant off the show, you are voting to open a hatch or not (during commercial break)....return....the hatch is opened. NO! You voted against it! Stupid people you say.
All of this creates emotion, personal connection and investment with a show. All resulting in increased tune-in and participation. The problem with this idea is the cost it would take to shoot two different scenes of a show.
