agree. excellent analysis.
interesting. Mocks are fun. Ok...every year there are players (derrik williams, the Morris twins, TRobb, evan turner) who people say are safe picks...slam dunks. They are wrong. This year its trey burke. Small, lacks top end speed, but has skills and smarts. Career back up. I believe the best player in this draft is Dennis Schroder. Flat out. The best., Elite speed ...freaky long arms and huge hands....is going to be the new Rondo. I love defensive minded point guards and he is going to be great. Second guy i love and rate almost second....is steven adams. He is going to be Bogut in a couple years. Bennett is next. I worry about his health though. Noel I worry cant put on weight. Nice player, but....#1? Off an ACL....i dont know. Spurs wont take Bebe., forget it. Ive heard enough to know, they dont take Bebe.. I can see reggie bullock maybe...even Mbakwe....(way underreated in spite of knees and age)....Withey is underrated, and why Plumlee gets no love is beyond me. Guy is ok....not great...but christ, he can run and he's 6 11 and change. Lorenzo brown? Why are crabbe and snell on everyone mocks but Mbakwe and colton iverson and Nedovic are not? Tony snell represents what you can find 8 or 10 of in every summer league. Mediocre wings with decent shots, but not much else. OK, now, because people have emotional attachments to certain ideas (Noel is best player in draft, or Burke will be a star etc) i expect to be seen as crazy. I said faried was a top three talent and got grief too (of course i loved jan vesely as well....so...yeah......pass me the meds, please).....but schroder is going to be an all star point guard.
agree with omredunord.....vikes have to be on here I think. I also wonder IF houston should be? Why is time running out on Kubiak? This is a winning organization now...a winning team...and they're close. Once you reach that level, a lot depends on luck, and on a few bounces. Houston has drafted well, and played well. What is demanded? a super bowl immeidately? Im curious.
watch for anthony mccloud, FSU NT.......and brandon kauffman, small school eastern washington.....big vertical receiver. And rogers gaines, giant tackle from tenn. state. 36 in arms.
i dont see lemonier as a second round pick. Honestly.....arthur brown is a better player...hell, chase thomas is better. Lemonier has always seemed overrated to me....but what do i know. Cyprian i love. And Id rate Alford up there and where does Mathieu go??? Seattle or SF?
Philly takes Geno..........cant imagine otherwise. He fits the system and nick foles doesnt. I think Luke and Fisher go 1 & 2.....then raiders do Star or floyd. Then geno, then Detroit takes Ziggy Ansah and then who knows....cleveland is alway s a mystery to me. Milliner? Lane Johnson? Star or Floyd....but i do see Arizona surprising people and taking warmack. And i predict buffalo goes with Austin. The jets take nassib.
Agree about syl williams. IVe liked him for two years now. I think Star is #1 though.....he's simply a dominating tackle.....albert haynsworth level............but williams right behind. Floyd's short arms bother me a bit, the way Ingram did last year. I think Star is at the top, williams, and then Richardson --though richardson is maybe more scheme limited, I dont know. Werner for me is the top end though.....Hunt isnt even on the list. I like akeem spence too, whose strength makes him a guy to watch...plus effort. Great work here.....a fun read. The big sleeper for me is Anthony McCloud at FSU, but nobody seems to talk about him except as a late round flyer.
Is Hankins not considered first round material? Id rate hankins above Jesse Williams. Syl Williams is a terrific 4-3 tackle.....not sure if he is a 5 technique. Jesse williams can do both, so can Hankins. I actually think Hankins is the second best in this draft after Star. Floyd's short arms bother me, same as Ingram's did last year. Ive just not been that impressed. Probably havent seen enough of him to say that but thats my impression.
@LawrenceMack that makes sense Lawrence....EXCEPT im not sure allen or patterson are as good as previous top wide outs (AJ Green for example). Thats the question. Patterson is very raw (stephen hill level raw almost) and Allen while very good, Im not sure is a real franchise wide receiver. IF Lotulelei were there, id say thats the pick. If not....you have question marks with guys like Ansah and jarvis jones and mingo and jordan. None of slam dunk picks. Ansah might actually provide the most potential upsdie but isnt maybe the best fit, I dont know. Jordan either. So its either roll the dice on Allen.....a bit of a reach but still a solid pick that helps...OR take Milliner.....who is a stud (and better than anyone available in the third)....OR take a sheldon richardson, who i think can play almost any position on the D line, or shariff floyd if he's there. The best bet would be Lotulelei....but i think he's gone. The other option is werner if he's there...playing as a base end....and it just depends how good you think Werner will be....personally i think very good. Id go defense and look for a wide out in the 2nd....chris harper or stedman bailey or robert woods.
to be fair i guess some teams see Cooper as a center. but WHY would GB want him as that......is there a reason Russ knows about? And mostly, i just do NOT see Nassib and barkely in the first round. In the 2nd yes...but maybe I'll be proven wrong, and maybe Fisher falls to wherever and maybe cornellius (not cornell, i dont think....?) carradine goes that high...maybe......some teams no doubt like him.....but the two things i can buy are sam montgomery and corey lemonier that high. Especially montgomery. Its just that the logic of this mock eludes me.......maybe russ turns out to be a genius.......what do i know........but it feels like a bad sort of uninformed lazy mock.
man, this is not a good mock. First off, Houston takes character guys...they're obsessive about it and Ogeltree is head case........next, GB takes defense...id bet the farm on that --and who said cooper is being groomed as a center?? Huh?? Myabe i missed something. I believe arizona ISNT taking a QB...but maybe......but while i find Werner hard to believe at 2....its possible i guess, he's a stud end, but then....Fisher isnt lasting until 11 and who said strength was an issue? Read Dan Pompei in your own paper Russ.....one of you is full of hooey. Next....sheldon richardson MIGHT be ok at the 5 tech.....but ideal? Hardly. He is a classic DT in a 4 3 front. NOBODY thinks sam montgomery is a first rounder at this point.....ahead of datone jones? ahead of jarvis jones !!!!! I mean its a reach...if you believe the medical flags hurt Jarvis jones, ok, but at this point its still a huge reach.......and montgomery just isnt a first rounder...there are too many guys to take in the second round when first round talent is still on the board...trufant for one....jesse williams, matt elam ....i dont know......its a lame mock and the analysis is idiotic,. Sorry.
im starting to miss wes bunting.
its JONathan cooper and Jonathan cyprian..............not john in either case.
all good observations......but a couple points; in the west, looking at the post season, it seems to me San Antonio is the team to beat, and OKC close second, but OKC has to figure out its westbrook problem. Third best team for post season seems to me to be Denver. I say that only because they are deeper, Karl is a great coach, and the Clippers have holes. Clips win a lot because CP3 is an all time elite point guard who wills victories. Im not sure he can carry the mediocrity of Jordan and an overrated bench of green, barnes, odom (ugh) and Bledsoe. Against top teams that bench isnt so impressive.......and even jamal crawford has cooled down a bit. Memphis' defense is brutal. I think the trades hurt them in terms of depth (Ellington and speights more than gay) so they have to play perfect to win. Denver's D is better than its been this last few weeks.....if that continues the Nugs should scare people. I think Denver catches clips in the standings. I would disagree clips were playing the best ball...guess we watch different games.
In the east......sadly its indiana who has a punchers shot at miami, but hibbert did his usual disappearing act the other night....so i dont know. I dont trust Vogel sometimes when I watch games. By the way, Houston is out in the first round because you dont win post season by playing such crap defense. Warriors are a better team overall...........but they have sagged. Lakers get in, sadly, because Utah has the worst coach in the league right now................which i dont believe is hyperbole.
packers are going to draft defense. Either a lineman or an OLB. My guess is if a kid like richardson is there, they take him.Maybe kawann short....sly willaims......but not a guard. Sheesh. Otherwise i can buy this.....magus hunt is maybe a reach. And Cyprian could easily crawl into the first round......matt elam too, or even eric reid. Last year was thin on safties, this year there are some good ones.
really interesting. The west is obviously a lot more intersesting. Denver is the team nobody wants in the west. I know defense wins and all that...post season......but memphis' loss of gay, while debatable, isnt the problem. The problem is the ellington and speights bench depth.....now gone. Denver has Karl, and he shoots for post season. I think denver wins even without home court. And I see spurs winning the west in the end. Clippers are the most overrated and i know thats a minority opinion, and god knows CP3 can carry a team all by himself --- but beware of the warriors playing over their head.....they got nothing to lose and are younger. Age is a factor for the Knicks in the east, where tired legs suggest they wont get out of the first round. Indiana is going to prove to be the only team the Heat fear....and they should. Brooklyn is the enigma. Id be more optimistic if Deron werent playing so flat out awful. Lopez is a force, and JJ is a playoff guy, who can really step up. But dang, Deron just hasnt been good and the team seems too much of a mess. I think they can beat atlanta though. I think Lopez and JJ and wallace will be too much. Otherwise, total agreement.....though I wouldnt be utterly shocked if the pacers surprised everyone to beat miami.
@TySun @4everis2long problem is, suns need everything. EVERYTHING. what dont they need? In a high lotto pick you draft BPA. Period. You dont reach for need. Mclemore is the only real two and twos are easier to come by than big men. If you dont like bennet (and read doug gillespie at CBS this morning on bennett) then Id say take cody or shabaaz...but mostly i would look for good big men. Gortat is all you have of any quality at all and he wants to leave.
with due respect., you DONT HAVE ANY GOOD YOUNG PLAYERS. Thats the problem,. Who is good?????????????????? The morris twins? No, thats why you got the extra one for a crappy second round pick. Marshall cant shoot, cant guard anyone. And people knew this when he entered the draft. Two drafts in a row were busts. You could have had any number of quality guys instead of marshall. Only Dragic is any good, really. He's a stud. build around him. But hire a real coach.......a guy who demands respect (because clearly hunter doesnt) and send off Gortat and his bitching and buy out the hopeless cancer that is Beasley. Id keep dragic and Tucker.....maybe trade dudely who is good, but is a better trade asset, and the rest can leave. Id re sign O neil actually. Then hope Anthony Bennet is still there when you pick.
two terrible drafts...........and idiotic free agent signings and trades. If you are too dumb to know beasley is a hopeless dead loss............and why adelman demanded he be sent away.........then you shouldnt be a GM. Only sacramento is worse. its pathetic.
@Jared Dubin thanks.
