Good read once again. Sorry to say but I feel another throw away year coming but TT and MM are gonna need some time to clean up the horrendous mess left by AJ and Norv so I guess to the extent possible I'm OK with it. It is what it is (oops did I say that?). I'm not sold on Pagano as DC and if this defense doesn't make further progress this season I think there's a decent chance he'll be gone he's not necessarily MM's guy. Also Mathews better stay healthy and hang on to the ball or this could be it for him as well as Acee pointed out is recent column. Don't underestimate the value of a good LT especially when you have a QB who is basically a statue. That's it for now good luck with book.
@Lucab12 Yeah I think you said awhile back you liked the Mets and hated the Yankees. The book was awesome. Wish he'd do more Dark Tower side stories like that one.
Ross, belated birthday wishes. 42? Shit, you're a kid. Enjoy it. Anyway, excellent read. I've had many of the same thoughts lately. TT & MM are in a really tough spot. I have no problem with what they've done or haven't done so far. The Legion has to understand that moves like letting Vasquez walk are actually steps towards making the team better. How? Maybe he wasn't the type of player they need to do the things McCoy wants to do. It's going to take 2 or 3 years to get those players. I know that sounds like a long time and I'm not real happy about it myself, especially in light of all the shit we've been through the last few seasons, but it's reality. But I have to think that the message has been received loud and clear by the remaining players. The fucking country club has been closed. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise us this coming season or in 2014 with a season like, as you said, 2004 (hopefully with a better ending). And I'm with you - this time of year absolutely sucks if you're a football junkie. March Madness - it's nice. Baseball? The fucking Padres don't even exist as far as I'm concerned. At least you've got the Yankees out there. The NBA? WTF is that? Anyway hang in there. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Let's see what happens when a close game is on the line. That will be very telling. Will there be anymore 4 & 29 disasters? Anymore double-digit leads blown in the second half of games? Will there be effective in-game adjustments? When these types of problems are corrected is when we'll know things have truly changed. Also, more accountability please. No more of this encounter group bullshit. These are MEN, not boys, getting paid a lot of money to do a job. I'm very curious to see how this unfolds. Fuck, this is going to be one long, long off-season.
@Osaka17 Bit harsh on Telesco don't you think? Let's at least give the guy a chance before we get to the fuck-you stage. As for Dean, yeah I get that. Acee - merely annoying. I feel bad for Raye but I think they did a smart thing by going outside and getting someone with a new perspective. As for finally being done of Norv and AJ, Halle-Fuckin'-Lujah. Good. Fucking. Riddance.
Oh no. Please, no.
But seriously, you have to be proud of that effort regardless of the circumstances.
Aw shucks, went and ruined Takeo Spikes' playoff game. Damn.
@boltrunner Yep. Wish Spanos would do it tonight, but since he's a nutless worm it won't happen.
Gotta say this for Philip. He's a game changer.
This is just another example of how out of touch this team is with it's fan base. Mr Johnston seems to have forgotten what transpired in the previous 2 years beginning with the loss to the Jets in the playoffs. I could go back decades to cover all the other disappointments this franchise has laid on it's fans but it would take too long. The affect is cumulative. This anger and frustration have been building for a long time. The players don't understand b/c their perspective is derived only from their time here. Bill should try working for a team in a market like New York or Philadelphia before he accuses the fans of over-reacting. Such bullshit. OK Bill, we'll take our chill pill but the effect it's going to have this time is flat out apathy. But at least it'll be quiet at the stadium.
Well that's it. That does it. I am officially pulling for the Chargers to lose. Up 24-0 at HOME and you fuck the game away. Never mind adjustments. Philip Phuckup would have negated them all anyway with his idiotic turnovers. I see you didn't learn anything from last week's debacle Mr. Phuckup. Fuck this whole beshitted thing.
We've been over this so many times. If the Chargers got to the AFCCG and lost, would that make everybody happy? Not me. But that would allow Norv to keep his job and this circus would be allowed to continue for God know's how long. He should have been gone already. To use Ross' phrase, I "throw up a little bit in my mouth" at the sight of him. As for this game, once again it's a top shelf QB against our over-matched secondary, which is never a good thing for them, and if Gaither can't go it''s gonna be real long night for lead foot if they can't run the ball. And if there's adjustments to be made, count on them not being made. I'm sorry but I don't like our chances. Hope I'm wrong, sort of.
I'm sure no one is surprised about the result. This was a very winnable game. This is the kind of loss that comes back to haunt a team late in the season, when you're in a tight race and you think it sure would be nice to have not let that game get away. And Rivers with his "we can learn from this" bullshit. Hey Philip, it's not like it hasn't happened before. Aren't you supposed to have learned by now? That's just the thing - Norv's teams never learn their lessons. I'll refrain from making any predictions about the Bronco game since usually I wind up looking like an idiot. But my faith is ever waning.
Well, time for me to man up and admit I was wrong about the 2-4 thing at the bye. Glad of it to. Now having said that I'm not real confident about our overmatched secondary going up against Drew and his boys. But then again I'm not playing. But if the Chargers plan on being in their base defense a lot of the time it's going to be a long long night. No less than 5 db's every play. Screw the run. The Saints aren't going to beat you that way. They rip off a couple nice runs who gives fuck. Sooner or later they'll get bored with it. You need speed to handle that offense - in the secondary and rushing the passer. Get your fastest rushers in there and get after him. They need to play Brees in a manner similar to the way they've played Peyton in the past. So there's my 2 cents worth. I will be at the game, unless I pass out on Bourbon Street before.
@Lucab12 @sdjeff Just to clarify, I was at the game. I was just trying to say that it's easier to analyze a game when watching on tv. But after seeing an effort like that, who are they going to beat? KC there? That's always been a house of horrors for the Chargers and the Chiefs and their fans are going to be pumped up. At NOLA (I'll be there)? Drew Brees lives to beat the Chargers. Denver at the Q? OK, that's a maybe but still I don't think today's debacle will inspire confidence in any coach, player, or fan as to what happens for the remainder of the season.
Well that was a complete shit sandwich. The cupcakes are out of the way. Today the Chargers went up against a real NFL team, and it showed. Without the benefit of TV I'll have to provide my "observations" based only on being at the game (what a waste of money that was). So here they are.
1) The o-line is absolutely pathetic, and unless Gaither gets back soon then there will be many more performances like today's
2) I'm sorry but I see no improvement in the defense. Remember who the defense went up against in first two games. Pagano is just like all the other failed d-coordinators we've had in the past. Seemingly no idea how to get to the QB. Third down remains a nightmare. If it's not the scheme it's the players and that points back to AJ.
3) Every fucking week I hear Norv talk about how much this work this team has to do. It seems like none of it ever gets done. They just go out and make the same stupid mistakes which has been a hallmark of his career as a HC. However, not to contradict myself, he's not the one fumbling the ball on the 2 and throwing stupid interceptions.
4) Ryan Mathews is not suited to carry LT's jock strap. I'm so sick of that dude. He has the body of a god but he's fragile and fumble prone which sucks if you're a RB
5) While I've already called out the o-line, Rivers has to shoulder some of the blame for some really rookie-like mistakes, notably the horrible interception just before half to set Falcons up for a score. I know he's under terrible pressure but there was no excuse for that throw. He is CLEARLY regressing.
6) And finally, 2-1 on the way to 2-4 at the bye, on the way to another season without playoffs, on the way to Norv and AJ finally getting canned, and on the way to Mr. John Gruden being introduced as the new Chargers head coach in January of 2013.
Well what do ya know, I don't have a single thing to bitch about after today's game. Hard to complain when you're team whens by 28 no matter who the opponent is. But if I could make just one "observation", I'd say that the Chargers need to work on their running game. When the blocks are there the backs aren't getting to the hole in time. Sometime there's just no where to go. In any case it looks like we need Mathews back real bad. I know Battle did some good things but by then the Titans had given up the ghost. And things are going to get much tougher starting next week with the Falcons. That's it for now . Cheers.
@Lucab12 Ross, it's conspiracy theory time. I say that Mathews was hurt BEFORE that play, that he actually got the injury in the accident and they're trying to to cover it up. Think about it, that tackle didn't look particularly violent, and after it happened we didn't hear about it until after the game. The ESPN guys never mentioned Mathews after that, he was never shown on the sideline, and no one wondered about his absence from the game. It's such an easy out for them, to say it's a legitimate football injury, when in fact they're trying to cover up the fact that this guy is an idiot who doesn't take his job seriously. Oh well, they weren't going to be successful with him healthy anyway. They can suck just as well without him as with him.
I know this thread is about the loss of Junior, oh my aching soul, and I'm sorry to take away from that, but I can't help commenting on the Norv references by Ross and Jenn. Though I still think they're going to miss VJ, I also felt the Chargers addressed just about everything they needed to in free agency and the draft. I even allowed myself to be briefly optimistic about the upcoming season, but the realization that Norv is still the coach slammed me back into that sense of futility. I can only take comfort in the knowledge that this will be it for him.
