@fishandtaxes

Not a lot there that I disagree with, other than the inherent problems of viewing a game as a series of one-on-one match-ups.

Probably the only thing I'd disagree with it the importance of Kawhi matched up on LeBron (tho' from what you said, I think we're pretty much in accord on the impact of James in a basketball game).  Leonard didn't give LeBron fits, the Spurs did - and it was more a case of no-one else on Miami's roster being able to have any impact at all, such was the Spurs dominance.

Look... at this point, it's all conjecture.  I simply object to the "there's no way" point of view taken in the piece.  Both teams have to actually GET to the next Finals.

Come on dude: then refute what I said, rather than just saying *oh gee that's opinion* (tho' I can understand why you wouldn't want to go there).

And jh?  This sentence:

"Should I fallow the standard that you have put forward in these discussion  based on opinion and conjecture..."

is an interesting stance given your first post in this.  You offered nothing but (and slammed the NBA for doing the same).

THEN you go on and paint opinion as "fact" - your "fact 2" is only fact up until "... change [sic] teams twice..." then it's opinion yet again.

So.... to summarize: thus far you've offered some ad hominem, then that James has won 40% of the Finals he's been in... has changed teams twice (well... the second's a return - he's only played for 2 teams)... and then a combination of telling us the Spurs rock - and hating on LeBron.

Ummm... gee.  Thanks for that.

So... your analysis amounts to "same thing said last year"?  "Cleveland and LeBron are all hype"?  "Spurs are defending champions" (how's that worked out historically?)?

How does all that - which basically amounts to naught but hyperbole - detract from anything I said?

Let's explore what you said a lil'...

- "Same arguments".  Most pointedly, you did not.  There were just about as many people predicting a San Antonio win prior to the Finals as Miami (for what it's worth: I picked SA).

- "...ran away with his tail between his legs..."

Someone's sounding a wee bit bitter.  So... he should stay at Miami, when he can impact a team and end up with a far better roster to play with?  Why on earth?  Flat out inane.  Additionally, the "tail-between-his-legs" comment intimates that he had a bad Finals.  Most poignantly, he did not.  Let's be honest: the entire Kawhi-outplayed-LeBron storyline is somewhat facetious.  Because if that was "out-playing" him, I'd hate to see the statlines if he got beat.

- You deride the NBA for riding hype, yet what beyond just that have you offered in your retort?

How is "believing in LeBron James" fit in the category of "hype", anyway?  The guy has done more than prove himself over the last half a decade.  If someone fits within the category of remaining a *non-believer* as to the guy, then it's based on something other than reality.

Well... aside from the obvious problems of seeing a basketball game as a series of *mano e mano match-ups*, outside of a few Spurs fans I don't think ANYONE would see LeBron-vs-Kawhi as "...I think this is the most even matchup of the five starting positions."

Leonard won the Finals MVP due to it being almost by default.  San Antonio won, therefore it has to be a Spur... and for the series Kawhi was the best player... probably (there are arguments for other players - and you probably know them better than I do!).

But to declare him now a close match with the guy who is the undisputed best player in the world?  Hell... I don't think Leonard's even the best player on his team - so that declaration's a bit of a reach.
Leonard did well on LeBron due to all that was being asked of James.  That last Heat team was akin to LeBron's first trip to the Finals (funnily enough - against the Spurs!), where he had little support from a poorly constructed team (that did manage to win 60+!).  Wade was useless, Bosh at times invisible.  The way the Heat looked entirely mortal-sans-one-guy is why LeBron left.

The Cavs are looking pretty good now, and LeBron will have enough help around him that Leonard-vs-James will be far more difficult than it was last Finals.

Some other bits...

- Tim Duncan can't guard Love... nor will he be required to.  In this match-up, there's no way Pop has Duncan running out to defend Love's range.

- Splitter's not better than Varejao.  I think Tiago's a perfect fit for the Spurs team, but against the Cavs I don't think he'd even be a starter.  I'd guess they'll have Diaw on to cover Love, and Timmy anchors.

- I'd have the guard-play in SA's favor.  TP/Kyrie... pretty close but the advantage goes to Parker.  Green I'm not a huge fan of, and it depends on how Manu's season unfolds - but an advantage to the Spurs, if by a smaller margin than at the point.

- I think you're overestimating the difference of the benches... but I do like the team unity of SA.  I think you're underestimating the *LeBron effect* that he's going to have on those *role players* (to parlay Harden).

- Historically... the Spurs haven't done brilliantly after winning a title.

I think when push comes to shove, a match-up is going to come down to:

- What kind of a coach is Blatt?

- How old is Timmy Duncan this season?  And Manu...

- How good is LeBron James?

No Dave, you're delusional.  And I mean that in the most gentle way possible.

You stated that you only speak this way because of some sense of entitlement at being right.  Condescension is condescension, whatever the justification given.  Forgive me if my patience has worn somewhat thin, and I'm giving a lil' back.

"Convoluted"?  Well, your replies have become increasingly so, and your last post is no exception... now blaming "gravity" as part of the problem.  So... it wasn't even Ginobili's fault at all now.
Come on Dave... "gravity"?
Sheesh...

Talking of convolution - "grabbing and pulling someone's arm" is a basketball play... you know what I'm talking about Dave - it's in the rule book.  It's not a "basketball play".  Indulge in semantics all you like on that.
*Pushed*?... to quote Inigo Montoya, you keep using this word.  I do not think it means what you think it means.

The only reason I didn't discuss the LeBron play is for the reasons YOU listed when you first mentioned it.  "It was the same only it wasn't".
Speaking of avoidance tho' - glad you've moved off the "he-wasn't-below-him" stance.  That was... odd.

Don't both replying Dave.  It'll only be even more nonsensical.  I've used video/photos... and you've used... well... "gravity".

Video-don't-lie Dave.  Nor do dictionary definitions.

Pull: to draw towards oneself.

Push: to press upon or against (a thing) with force in order to move it away.

We can argue semantics as to which terminology to use, but the facts remain the same: Manu Ginobli exerted a non-basketball play *force* upon Tony Allen, whilst Allen was airborne... which caused him to fall.

I suspect that there's an even more convoluted reply from you in my near future...

@Dave_McNulla @WithMalice

I'll allow your somewhat facetious commentary as to being simply a "passionate Spurs fan". Henceforth, any chance we can just discuss this without condescension - fair?

Anyway... let's address your assertion (calmly, and rationally):
1. Being below Allen.
Err... Dave?  He was absolutely "below Allen".  You might want to check the video shown at the beginning of this piece.
Have a look:
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9417/manuallen1.png
Definitely "below".

2. Push vs Pull.  Well, this is the only place that I'm reading it as a "push"... and I have to say no: he "grabbed".  Commentary even stated (at the 0.17) "...as Ginobli grabbed his arm".  Again, I urge you to look at the video at the beginning of the piece.
Better yet - check this one out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z2Sa62bW6g
HD, clearer.  Watch from 0.52 through to about 0.58 (slo-mo, hi-def!).  Manu's hand is definitely grabbing, definitely pulling down.  And again at 1.06-1.11.

Here's a picture of the hand on his arm: http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/9345/manuallen2.png
Note the position of thumb vs fingers, that's a grabbing motion.

I absolutely agree that Allen overacted (tho' you can get concussed without actual contact to the head - tho' clearly that's not the case here).  But Ginobili made a play that was potentially dangerous.  That's a flagrant.

1 year, 4 months ago on Tony Allen: Manu definitely committed a flagrant foul on me

Reply

Umm... you're airborne, someone who isn't holds your arm unexpectedly and moves beyond you. Your vaunted laws of physics will ensure you fall. More so, it wasn't a "push".

Did Allen go on the worst acting spree since Tom Cruise in the late 90s? Absolutely. Awful stuff an he SHOULD be fined (I doubt the league will tho'). But that *should* be irrelevant in assessing the flagrant foul.

@Lives "Being critical of the best choice out there"?  How so?

Because I called him a "part-timer"?  Hell, that's what Jackson would have amounted to being, and I'll stand by my comment that I do not want a guy who's half-assed about the job.  Develop a mentor?  Mentee perhaps?  How would Phil develop his own 'mentor' (would that be Tex Winter?)?

Interesting you make the Freudian slip of calling the Lakers "the Knicks"... and really.  You'll talk the Knicks up after less than half a dozen games?  Just as I'll not write the Lakers off on their performances thus far this season, I'll not crown the Knicks as... well... anything yet.

And didn't the Knicks get to be rated 5th in Def efficiency with Mike D at the helm?  Sure, Woodson had a lot to do with that... but at least realise that he has a helluva lot more to work with at LA than he did at New York.

Lastly: ridiculous to say "never".  But for David Stern's suspension of Amare, they'd both be likely to already *HAVE* a ring.

"Rebuilding" in a more traditional way (ie. bottoming out and praying for a franchise guy via the draft) is basically ensuring the franchise bites the dust.
