I'll take someone like Joe Flacco for now.   If Gabbert keeps emulating Eli Manning though then we'll have to wait a few years for a bit.

@NickelandDime I wouldn't be shocked to see Jones cut and have the Jags go with Bolen and Tahi.  Jones is still a ripped beast (featured photo shows it) but his time is running in Jacksonville.  They have the cap space to keep him though....it's just a matter of whether they want him taking up one of the two fullback spots.

@Chipshot Nice insight!  My money is on Mularkey's will winning.  He and Smith may slowly converge when making personnel decisions and I think they will value each other's input.  I think Mularkey comes out on top though because most of those older players are still Shack Harris players not Gene Smith players.  Smith's players are only three years in the league, he's got time to grow with a new contract.  Even if MJD and Lewis leave, they were Harris picks....

Smith hasn't been overly loyal to players he didn't pick (thus far).  I'd watch for him to get close with Mularkey and be part of the "new wave" again.

@Chipshot I think the situation would be a lot less complicated if Gene Smith had a policy about only re-signing/extending players when they had one year left on their contracts - much like Spielman in Minnesota.

Personally, I think that Smith is thinking about life after MJD.  Next year I wouldn't be surprised if the Jags brought in a young back to provide a little extra punch for Jones-Drew.  Of course, he is only 27 and could still have some gas left in the tank.  I think his small frame will probably catch up with him though and he'll really start to feel the beatings he takes every down.

@JacobJones1 Sorry to be getting back to you so late.  I have no problem admitting that the Texans are a good team.  However, I find that Kubiak's success last season is more of an aberration than what is normal from his time as a head coach.  A look at win-loss records shows this to be true.  Looking at the team, it is clear to see that the success of the team correlates more with the quality of players - especially since the head coach has remained constant.  I think that if their top players go down it is very difficult for the team to do well since Kubiak is not a coach that manages to get the most from all of his players (but rather from his high skill players).

I could be wrong and Kubiak could repeat, but I expect that Phillips' defense will be good and we will see a return back to normal for an 8-8 or 9-7 finish (who knows, those marks may be good enough to win the division!).

Oh, and Jennings is a solid receiver.  He averaged 8.6 yards per catch on 26 receptions in 2010.  Plus he's 6' so he's a considerably larger target than most receivers on the team (at least last year) and MJD.

Speaking of heat, I was enjoying my 75 degree dry summer in Montana when I figured a trip to Illinois was a good idea....45% humidity and 104 is what I got.  Not my smartest move.

Do you remember when Mathis said he plays the receiver more than he worries about what they've done on tape?  It was a couple of years ago.  I'm not certain that will work as well for him in the slot, but maybe it will transition better than I think.  My money is on him beating out Ross but Ross not caring because his wife wins a gold medal in this Olympics.

It'll be curious to see if this does happen in the NFL. I don't think that the way the league is structured currently allows for it, but maybe MJD and some great tight end or something will start to package themselves and betray their small markets for the glory of New York?  *cue suspenseful music*

Well put together analysis sir!  I think we may just be an easily deceived defense...in the 4-3 scheme run by Tucker we don't have a lot of overly aggressive plays to call and rely on the reaction of individual players.  Really too bad. I'm going to blame the secondary being unable to get off the receivers and recognize where they need to be to cover the run.  A biased blame game?  Perhaps.

Well shucks...very good points about Veldman.  If Lewis doesn't prove he's worth the money in 2012 then I doubt he'll have a roster spot available to him next year, either opening the door for a high draft pick or for someone on the roster to step up.  Potter has yet to show he wants to do that so why not let Veldman give it a go?

I think we'll see one of the wide receivers who went undrafted take a spot on the roster.  The cutting of Jarret Dillard displayed confidence at the position and shows that the players beneath him were really pushing for his spot.

@zsgowani Well the GM says he isn't going to trade Harvin.  To show his disappointment, Harvin just left camp.  So they have a holdout that probably isn't contractually related (except that his contract is tied to the Vikings).

If they do trade him, he has proven to be worth a first easily.  His four touchdown returns and 30+ yard per return average (last season) is invaluable in itself.  Plus his rushing, big frame, and ability to play very good receiver makes him worth a package deal.

If they start getting desperate, maybe ship Thomas a second and a fourth for him?  The Florida climate will probably do him some good.

Assuming the Jags are interested of course.

@KeenanJ All fair points. I will elaborate on why I think the Bucs have the strongest roster of the five teams: With the Vincent Jackson acquisition I think that the receiving corps easily outstrips the Jaguars receiving corps (V-Jax and Mike Williams make a formidable duo - Williams has 1,700 yards over the past two seasons).  As you mentioned, the defensive ends are quite good.  I think that the true potential of the DEs is yet to be found though and they will find it in the next two years, maybe this year.  Ronde Barber can still play and the Mark Barron pick will pay dividends immediately (or at least I believe it will).  Eric Wright at corner is someone I find to be highly underrated as well.  Further, the running back stable in Tampa Bay leaves little to be desired.  Legarrette Blount (1,700 yards over the last two years) and Doug Martin (another good pick) help make Freeman look good.  As I said in the article, I am not a Freeman fan but he put up some good numbers a year ago (25 TDs to 6 picks).  While Carl Nicks has yet to gel with the rest of the offensive line, the unit has allowed 28 and 29 sacks the last two years and will only get better with him at guard.

I see a lot of upside on their roster.  There is very little for me to argue against them.  You bring up a good point about linebacking, but outside of that and fullback I really don't see the Jags with any real leads over the Bucs.
