I'll take someone like Joe Flacco for now. If Gabbert keeps emulating Eli Manning though then we'll have to wait a few years for a bit.
@NickelandDime I wouldn't be shocked to see Jones cut and have the Jags go with Bolen and Tahi. Jones is still a ripped beast (featured photo shows it) but his time is running in Jacksonville. They have the cap space to keep him though....it's just a matter of whether they want him taking up one of the two fullback spots.
@Chipshot Nice insight! My money is on Mularkey's will winning. He and Smith may slowly converge when making personnel decisions and I think they will value each other's input. I think Mularkey comes out on top though because most of those older players are still Shack Harris players not Gene Smith players. Smith's players are only three years in the league, he's got time to grow with a new contract. Even if MJD and Lewis leave, they were Harris picks....
Smith hasn't been overly loyal to players he didn't pick (thus far). I'd watch for him to get close with Mularkey and be part of the "new wave" again.
@Nomad72 It just doesn't match up well. I think it is a result of the multiple contributors to the article, but that's just me. It really is some good analysis.
Rod Issac will be worth watching. If he doesn't make himself relevant he'll be gone either this summer or next.
@JaiWaddell I'd like to not see Guy Whimper in that mix....potential surprise cut? *crosses fingers*
I wonder if Session can even be a three down linebacker in the current game, even if healthy.
@Davjay1983 Yup. So we just need Gabbert to be on Derek Anderson's level (and no, I am not referring to his Pro Bowl season with the Browns)
@Davjay1983 I think that's a pretty smart idea! I think it will come down to skill-set more than anything, but that would be quite clever.
Good point on the black uniforms. They look so cool though....pray for night games?
@Davjay1983 @LukeNSims Yeah, I should have stayed there for the rest of summer...
@Bobbyp84 @NickelandDime @LukeNSims @Davjay1983 @Chipshot I love me some Derek Cox, but he had zero interceptions through six games last year while he had 4 in 11 games started in 2010 - junior slump?
Was that a "vomit free since '93" reference Mr. Gowani? If so, I love it! If not, I still love it.
@Chipshot I think the situation would be a lot less complicated if Gene Smith had a policy about only re-signing/extending players when they had one year left on their contracts - much like Spielman in Minnesota.
Personally, I think that Smith is thinking about life after MJD. Next year I wouldn't be surprised if the Jags brought in a young back to provide a little extra punch for Jones-Drew. Of course, he is only 27 and could still have some gas left in the tank. I think his small frame will probably catch up with him though and he'll really start to feel the beatings he takes every down.
@JacobJones1 Sorry to be getting back to you so late. I have no problem admitting that the Texans are a good team. However, I find that Kubiak's success last season is more of an aberration than what is normal from his time as a head coach. A look at win-loss records shows this to be true. Looking at the team, it is clear to see that the success of the team correlates more with the quality of players - especially since the head coach has remained constant. I think that if their top players go down it is very difficult for the team to do well since Kubiak is not a coach that manages to get the most from all of his players (but rather from his high skill players).
I could be wrong and Kubiak could repeat, but I expect that Phillips' defense will be good and we will see a return back to normal for an 8-8 or 9-7 finish (who knows, those marks may be good enough to win the division!).
Oh, and Jennings is a solid receiver. He averaged 8.6 yards per catch on 26 receptions in 2010. Plus he's 6' so he's a considerably larger target than most receivers on the team (at least last year) and MJD.
Speaking of heat, I was enjoying my 75 degree dry summer in Montana when I figured a trip to Illinois was a good idea....45% humidity and 104 is what I got. Not my smartest move.
Do you remember when Mathis said he plays the receiver more than he worries about what they've done on tape? It was a couple of years ago. I'm not certain that will work as well for him in the slot, but maybe it will transition better than I think. My money is on him beating out Ross but Ross not caring because his wife wins a gold medal in this Olympics.
@Davjay1983 All the offenses did too though...
@Nomad72 Or can you imagine going against a 3-4 defense that is forced to use some linebackers to cover tight ends/receivers? It'd be heaven!
@Davjay1983 I'm not certain our defense would let us be as bad as we were last year even without MJD. That Carolina game in '11 should have been ours.
