Burns has more credibility than some commenters.
Thanks for the intro. You were right, I didn't know his back story.
Teams are obviously gaming the new system by finding out before hand what it will take to sign prospects before they draft them. The Astros switched to their #1 pick at the last minute and he signed for $4.8MM and passed on Appel because Boras wouldn't take $6MM. Our old Z knew what it was going to take to sign the new Z before he paid others over slot. Other teams called guys who were college seniors who were not sure they would be drafted at all and said if they would sign for $1,000 they would draft then in the 7th and 10th rounds and the guys did. The teams used the saved money to over slot guys they wanted to get. I doubt if MLB will complain as the Commish essentially got the hard slotting he had been lusting after. It would seem Appel picked the wrong "adviser" *cough agent cough*. The Pirates won't pay him anything close to $6MM so he will take the pay cut or gamble on going back to Stanford for his senior year and having less leverage next season, if he can keep pitching as well as he did in his junior year. If not he could fall out of the first round entirely. Jack Z's strategy for international signings is not apparent as most of the top rated guys have already signed with other teams. He's got something in mind I think.
At least it didn't hit him in the stomach.
The game can very often be cruel to a lot of very talented, hard working men of high quality. Most need a break here and there before they stick and many never catch one. Like you I'd have liked to see Moore at least get a couple of undamaged seasons to show what he had to offer. Hopefully he will still be able to get a chance with some organization but time never slows down and 28 years is seen as old for a prospect. The game is very good to the favored few and harsh on those who are luckless. I wish him well and thank him for his efforts to help our team.
Being old enough to be Moyer's father I'm guessing he has some clothes older than Hultzen, I know I do. I can also attest to the fact that nobody beats time or gravity and I feel that at least sometime youth is wasted on the young. However youth will be served eventually, it always is and has been. Tonight with some luck one of those opinions will be proven right or wrong. Myself? I'm pulling for the youngster, Moyer.
The sad part of Montero to 1B is Smoak having failed to keep the job. I'd prefer him to DH, although I could see him keeping catching and Zunino moving position, not what I expect though. We seem to be adding depth up the middle which will come in handy when Z sets up his trading tent.
He'd be better than Noesi and Millwood, although I get trying to make Millwood trade worthy before the deadline. I wouldn't mind seeing Iwakuma get some starts to find out if does have some value before the season is over. Kudos to Erasmo for his great loss, I think he's a keeper. Cameron is now on Smoak's case and suggests giving up on him. I could go along with sending him down to Tacoma to get his act together but not trading him. I'd like to see Montero at 1B, he might be adequate there.
Well put.
The team shouldn't need any more reasons to cut Figgins lose.
I think Saunders has more upside potential than ZIPS thinks.
I'm guessing they have already settled on a number with Zunino and are only waiting until he's finished playing in the CWS to give him a physical and sign him. Otherwise Z has figured out a way to game the system, if so I hope it's allowable under the new CBA. If not then there will be problems drafting next year.
Erasmo is the best replacement for Beavan at this point. If Noesi doesn't get better they need to swap him out for Iwakuma, of not Iwakuma then give Furbush another shot.
I'm a big Jack Z fan (although not as big as him) and one of the things I love about him is that he and Mac will look anywhere for talent and give a guy a shot if they like him. Like they did with Wilhelmsen and Delabar and players from Europe and Brazil and the independent leagues. I'm looking forward to seeing what Kivlehan can produce.
The rotation needs change more than a checkout clerk on payday. Sending Beavan and Noesi to Tacoma and bringing up Ramirez won't help Tacoma but they should get The Incredible Hultz pretty soon who should help them somewhat. One could go to the pen to replace Iwakuma or Furbush, in that order of preference by me. Sending Figgins to the Dominican Summer League might help too.
Dave Cameron suggests swapping him out with Iwakuma in the pen which works for me too. We also need to get Erasmo Ramirez in the big club rotation. I'm guessing Z is just waiting for the Jackson Generals to wrap up their first half of their season and qualify for their playoffs and then things will start to move.
@JCondreay @Keith_12thMR @maqman Jaso has turned out better than I expected, I thought Leuke was worth more, but he's playing minor league ball now I believe. Not the first time I've been wrong. Which ever of our backstop stock turns out to be capable will draw well on the trade market.
After the Mavericks and Generals get past the mid season point in a week or so we should start to see some moves made up the minor leagues pecking order. Hopefully some of the High Desert hot-sticks will get a chance to validate their numbers at the next level and Franklin and The Incredible Hultz will move on up to Tacoma.
Bet he never catches a six pitcher no hitter in his career.
I'm guessing Moore and Littlewood are looking at their second career choices about now.
