Maybe part of the Marino factor could be that the player is generally well liked and has the potential to become a respected national broadcaster. In that case... Rivers is off my list and in that case I'd say Romo is a 12. A 12 because he hasn't consistently outplayed his own team's talent like Marino did for eons. Romo has many gaffs and goofs on his resume. I look across the league and Sam Bradford appears to be the one. He is recognized for his talents and is also a truly likable guy but, so far... he hasn't had enough talent around him to get him anywhere close. Jeff Fisher could help that too since he seems to be the Marino of coaches. Always a bridesmaid... often laid but never leyed. BTW... great article... really loved it!
Atlanta- Poe could be "extra-worldly" like creatures in MIB.
Buffalo- Chiefs will look to "avenge" their loss of Berry last season.
San Diego- Poe and Hardwick will do "Battle" & SD is by the ocean... thus Battleship.
Raiders- If Poe plays well he will be the "Dictator" over their run and pass games.
Broncos- the last one is a joke... because the Broncos center is a joke.
It's not supposed to make a lot of sense... just help make it fun to read.
@KC_Fanactic69 I think you're right on when you say it will take 2-3 years. My hope... as unrealistic as it may be... is that he blossoms as fast as Eric berry did. But, yea... there aren't many guys who are as big AND athletic as he is. And the fact that he's open to learning and being taught... skies the limit.
@halfastco I've actually been up and down on Poe. Before the Combine I did research and was excited about his size. Then I watched game tape and decided he was not worth the risk. Then the Combine came and I was excited about his potential. Then I watched more game tape and returned to my original decision that he was too big a risk. Then the Cheifs choose him and the more I've found out about him and Crennel's reasoning for the pick... that more I've loved the pick.
@SarahThomas Love that Arrowhead roar!
Asamoah's performance in the latter half of the season seems to say it all. If he picks right up where he left off then it would only be if the rest of the team had a poor performance... and that's what could keep him from Pro Bowl consideration.
Cool post. Talking about "player performance" makes it feel like the season is nearly upon us.
@merlin_AA Yep... the days of Tony Richardson are long done, but, it will be interesting to see if Hillis puts as much passion into blocking for JC as he does running the ball himself. If so... this could be fun to watch.
Of course Matt will win this season... it's an even numbered year.
My first thought was... when we get someone to do one-to-one, in person, interviews with Chiefs players, Jane might bring a flavor we've not had at AA.
Jane, great post. Your sardonic literary style is really pleasing. A refreshing addition. I can't wait to hear your take on direct game action coverage. Well done.
1. OMG... who do you think we're losing to before that game? That's our tenth game?
4. Agreed. And... "Locks of Love"... greatness!
5. Heck, Bowe might be playing next tow a Megatron clone this fall (Baldwin) according to way he's progressing this off season. Hmm... Bowe as a number 2... hmm... wonder how that would play out?
8. "...a Super Bowl away from moving up a few slots"... gotta the post quote of the month!
9. Carbon copy that.
One big positive can be said of the Chiefs: at least one player from each position group has the potential to make the Pro Bowl. How many teams can claim that?
Smiled when I read this!
Do you think Poe is done growing yet? Maybe he'll have an Anthony Davis like growth spurt and the Chiefs can go to a 1-6.
Stephenson has starting left tackle upside and I'm thrilled that he is already rooming with Allen. I appreciate how Pioli drafts position players in pairs and I think their alliance will be a benefit to both. That said... my greatest concern for Stephenson has to do with him moving back to his old neighborhoods and familiar surrounding and falling into the trap of performing down to the lowest common denominator. He's a project from the projects with highrise upside.
Elam? Really? He has gotten fairly roasted here in the press in the Dallas area. Of course the press here is usually harsh unless your winning a spot on the Pro Bowl roster but, I never got the impression Elam was a gamer or capable of consistent performance. I have to admit I haven't seen him... but, this is what I've read and heard on local radio. Plus, Dallas still need Safety help so it makes you wonder why they would keep him around if he was any use at all. The Cowboys were #7 against the run in 2011 so I'm not sure how Elam's low rating against the run equates: the rest of the team did well when the opposition was running the ball but Elam whiffed whenever he got the chance to tackle a runner? I do know Rob Ryan has admitted his scheme was too convoluted for the players to pick up and he's planning on simplifying it for next season. So, maybe Rob Ryan didn't put Elam in positions where he could succeed.
In any case I'm wondering why you think Elam may be the best answer to Safety depth. He might be... but, I'm just not finding evidence either way to indicate whether he will or won't be good enough to fill that role for the Chiefs
@KC MikeG Great post Mike. "The future's so bright... I gotta wear shades"... loved that old song and it applies well hear too. Nice.
Your post also has me wondering just how many fans... become fans... mainly because they once played the sport... like you and I... and then were injured and couldn't play anymore so they took up being a faithful follower? It would be an interesting study sometime.
Once again... terrific post. It might be fun to have an ongoing post for Chiefs fans everywhere to tell how they became, specifically, Chiefs fans.
@LyleGraversen Couldn't have sed it better maself.
