I guess you know by now that Ingram is out for Sunday's game. The guy had a great game against Seattle. I hope he doesn't become a continual injury issue.

Ross, another fantastic post. You nailed every single point concerning Mathews. Enjoy the game behind enemy lines. Thought I'd post this interview. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON.
I have to add that there are those people who believe that Brown was picked up because they are not going to resign Mathews. Having said that they must see something in Brown that I have not seen yet. I hope they are right.

Brown is not the answer. I see nothing in Brown that says he can replace Mathews. Don't get me wrong, Mathews is a physical stud but I am over the drama that comes with him as our star running back. Time to experiment with the backs we have and once again Tom Telesco is the man who needs to come up with the answer. I trust that he will.
Now that Mathews is out time for Brandon Oliver to get some action. I am looking forward to seeing him in the first team offense. I think he could be what we need. He hits the hole quickly and he does a good job of taking care of the ball. When he hits the second level he is not looking to go down upon contact like Mathews does. Oliver should emerge and be a big story this year.

Other then that easy drive before the half the defense was strong today. They kept up with the pressure. Good call by Pagano. Even that Mathews fumble which Royal had to recover couldn't stop us.
Of course Rivers could not get it done, the play calling sucked and now it's up to our defense.
I'd burn that jersey Ross. Now that we stopped them, barely, can Rivers get the job done? Can Reich make the right calls? Can we execute? Where the hell is Floyd? Time for him to score.
Right on que. Mathews is a loser. We're better off not having him. He's a pariah.
Where the hell is Mathews?!*
Gotta do this for four quarters. Fortunately we have the ball coming out of the locker room.
Agreed Ross, his rep does influence but he can change that today if he leads us to a win.
Like I said, elite one minute, hot mess the next. Who finishes the game?
Harvins out of bounds and they still get the points. Yeah, it's gonna be that kind of day. Officials sticking it to the Chargers is nothing new.
Now Novak chokes, gives hawks ball on 40. Two plays later touchdown. Looks like we're getting the hot mess today.
Rivers stops another drive. At least it's early but I am tired of him being a choke.
Right when the media thinks the Chargers have no chance of winning they flip everything on it's head and play great football. That's what the December record is all about. When you count them out they seem to rise to the occasion. I never count them out completely because when they play mistake free football they look as good as any team in the NFL, dare I say "elite". But it is those mistakes, especially the one's that come after making a great play that drop them back into the "irrelevant" category. They are a true "Jekyll and Hyde" team, one minute looking like a Super Bowl contender, the next, a hot mess.
Are these inconsistencies due to poor coaching? This is only Mike McCoy's second year and he has already lost Ken Whisenhunt who was an important part of his coaching staff. We saw how good the Chargers were by the end of last season which I think in part had to due with Whisenhunts play calling. Can Reich do the job as well. Time will tell. But this is why McCoy is so important. Is he good enough to overcome losing who was in effect another head coach on his staff? Having Whisenhunt was a luxury. McCoy now has to be doubly good.
Three things that can't happen this week.
1. Can't play conservatively. For our team that means the opposite of every other NFL team. When other teams are playing conservatively that usually means they are running the football. For our team playing conservative means passing the ball on third and short. Time to man up and make short yardage plays by running the ball like the big boys do.
2. Can't miss opportunities. Freeney can't miss tackles for losses. Gilchrist and Weddle can't drop sure picks. Red Zone trips have to mean touchdowns.
3. Can't drop sure receptions. No explanation needed.
We can win this game. I believe it.
Because everyone is picking the Chargers to lose Sunday, Rivers will be that much more motivated. If there is anyone left on the offensive line by Sunday afternoon to block for Mathews he should have a big game. He might as well have a big game. They were saving him for something last Monday night.

As Freeney says, maybe if they learn from their mistakes on Monday night they can become a better team. They had better learn in a hurry and they better have a good week of practice because the World Champs are on their way after a long week of rest.

Ross, in the past I have always given Rivers the benefit of the doubt but all this "Manning Like" pre-snap bullshit is not helping the offense to get into any kind of rhythm. The O-line is also still weak inside. Rivers never has a clean pocket to work with but he does do a good job of stepping up into it with the little bit of room they do provide.
Once again, right on point with your post Ross. All I have to add is that I am never confident in Rivers and our offensive line to get the job done in crunch time. Rivers chokes the offensive line gets weak and the running game becomes non-existent.
By contrast, with over 2 minutes left and 2 time outs Tom Brady strikes fear into opposing defenses. Most everyone is surprised when he doesn't get it done. The only ones that are terrified when our offense is in that situation are the Chargers fans. And by now, as you have already perfectly stated, no one is surprised when Rivers and the Chargers fail to get it done. Quite the contrary. By now we have learned to expect it.
Rivers sucked tonight. Their tempo sucks. They will not scare anyone with this offense. Mathews is not in the game at crunch time. Why the hell do we have him. What do we have Brown for? No, we go to Woodhead to move the chains.

Now we see if Reich's play calling is any good.
Typical Chargers. Never looks easy.
WTF. How are we not getting to CARSON PALMER.
Good to see Floyd score. He almost dropped it.
The Chargers better get their heads out of their asses. At least we start with the ball in the second half.
Got to stop dropping balls.
Yes. Agreed Ross.
Maybe if Green would have blocked Royal could have gotten by. Terrible execution on offense. Very frustrating.
Not happy with the effort on offense so far. Play calling not great. AZ playing good D. Keep 88 off the field. He can't block. Making Foote look all world.
Holding AZ to three right there was huge.

They're the champs. So no big deal that they looked like it. Our speed on defense is in question so when we play them again if we can't contain Wilson the result will be the same. The good news is that we made the playoffs last year with a team that wasn't as deep. If we make the playoffs this year we should make some noise because we have one tough regular season schedule ahead of us.

Feels good to reconvene once again at the JUSTICE IS COMING headquarters. What up Ross?
It didn't take long for Mathews to piss me off on Thursday night. Everything was looking positive until the dumb ass takes off from the 3 yard line.
Other then that I like our depth at all the skill positions.
Don't you wish that Woodhead was a bigger back? He is such a badass and I love his subtle way of signaling first down.
I'm sure everyone enjoyed the highlight of the night, Inmans catch from Clemons.
Ross, I have great optimism for this season. But of course as always thats dependent on the bolts staying healthy on both sides of the ball.

Sounds like a good bet
6 months, 1 week ago on I Guess There Really Is No Offseason
I believe you are right.
The signing of Donald Brown will hopefully end the insanity of having to use Woodhead up the gut. Now if Mathews can stay healthy for an entire season we will have enough options to really mix things up coming out of the backfield. More options for Rivers to throw to.
Has anyone heard anything about the statis of Freeney? We still had next to no pass rush last year. I would love to see the defense upgraded significantly this off season.
Offensively we need Gates to improve over his performance last year and for a couple of deep threats at WR to materialize. It seems that Telesco is willing to go with our present offensive line for one more year.
Our top pick in the draft will probably be secondary with O-line and D-line to follow.
Good news that Hardwick is staying. I would like to see him finish on top.

Yes, I think that's a good call.

Whizzer did contribute to the loss yesterday with an impossible game plan. Without Mathews the running game was weak. Still we have a lot to look forward to. I hope the loss exposed everything we still need as a team to Telesco. Those extra 2 games played should have shown him a lot. Should Whisenhunt take another job we can at least feel good about his replacement being even better than him. We all know we need a lot of help on the offensive line and secondary. I am sure we are not alone in realizing that.
I have a better attitude after yesterdays loss. We all kinda knew we were short handed this year but the team played hard and Rivers looked great. Going forward I think we are in good hands.
Have a good year Justice League. Once again Ross, you are the man. Good health to you and your family and I will be looking forward to talking to you as new things develop.
I guess I should stay negative so the team can still have a chance. There is still time but will they just tear my heart out again.
Allen is the man
Well Ross, it doesn't look good. We are over matched today in the trenches. I did like seeing Allen burn Jammer. We definitely have a good receiver there. I think we have a lot of holes to fill in the off season but we are going in the right direction. Offensive line still stinks but has had some good moments. I see 2 new guards on the o-line and Hardwick will probably retire so we will need a new center. Secondary stinks also but we look good enough at the safety position.
We need more than Mathews. He is just too fragile. Brown is not enough and Woodhead is too small.
Telesco did a good job in his first year. Now he really has to go to work and fill all the gaps. I also would like to see the defense go back to a 4-3. The Chargers can never disguise the blitz well in the 3-4.
Hopefully we still have Rivers by the time Telesco gets this team in real contention.
Have a good year. Thanks for keeping the troops motivated and I'll talk to you when anything new develops.
Well Ross, the only thing that got punished in the first half was Rivers. Man our offensive line looks bad. I did like the emotion McCoy showed after the INT by Butler was confirmed. I hope he has a good half time speech in him and I hope the Whizzer knows how to adjust.
As a Charger fan I have gone crazy.
Dominate on defense. Punish with the run.
Offense set the tone in the first quarter running the football. Then the defense took over. The play calling in the red zone was not good but as bad as it was our defense was awesome. On to Denver. Ross, looks like you will be heard from again. Excellent post...as always.
