Mass attention is seen as the golden nugget. It's something that is so hard to get to, then so fleeting, then … crash and burn time. Used to be there were a select few who went through this kind of cycle (entertainers), but seeking the empty fulfillment (that instant dopamine rush) which is so much a part of all things social media … well we see this same cycle with a much larger group of people now …

We can each be our own little hot mess. And if we do rely on this fickle online bubble to keep us happy that's probably a sign that we need to change habits, quickly before the vortex consumes us. But really it's hard to fight off the dirty bugger, because most of us do crave that rush of attention, it's only human.

Very cool. Adam is a natural on camera, so relaxed. And Jayme … what a host! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Margie,

The followers comment sounds like middle school behavior. Silly!

I like to play this game with my family and ask them if they know ... fill in the blank with any social media / blogging superstar ... And Katy Perry, Oprah, and Bieber don't count either ;) They stare at me blankly.

Follower count doesn't matter and if you're basing your value on that, well …

But I also agree that it's not our business to police others and tell them what to do. Reminds me of the cringe-worthy jokes of many comedians. It's their job to test these comfort zones, but whether they've gone too far or not … so subjective.

Good luck, Sir. I'll be honest with you, I despise exams ... Argh ;) Really, but it sounds like you're a better man than I when it comes to exam time. The added pressure of your wife as Pres. though, man! Best of luck, Ralph.

Hi Danny,

Looking forward to reading more about the Third Wave approach, and really addressing the needs of the customer. Love the message of going beyond the buzz, with a focus on real business return. This stuff is SO not my bailiwick though … when I think of influence marketing I think of Scott Monty, but it sure seems like he has a handle on it with a message of seeing things from the perspective of the consumer, and thinking like them and less like traditional marketers. Anyway, looking forward to learning more :)

Also, I really love the new look, especially the B&W, spartan look of the landing page. Very nice!

Hi Ralph,

Reminds me of the highly collaborative setup Steve Jobs constructed at Pixar. It was about promoting encounters and the unplanned meetings are usually where the most creative stuff happened.

I moved into a new office several months ago and have yet to hang one print on the wall. Been too busy. That is my excuse, but I really should get busy. Glad Google has your approval, I don't think my office would … ;)

Hey Margie,

I've made some great connections online, and had the pleasure of meeting many of those fine people in person. There is nothing like meeting someone face to face of course and it is so very cool to finally meet someone you've been engaging with on Twitter for eons ;) But I've made some great connections mainly through the blog and Twitter. And like you've written so well, it's a patchwork quilt of varying levels of friendship. I had coffee with fellow Seattleite (or PNW'er) Bob Dunn and we ended up talking for hours. He gave me waaaay more pointers than I gave him though, so I got the better end of the deal. Anyway, just using the phone or good old email is 100 times better than any social network.

Hi Danny,

I'm just a small business owner who fell in love with blogging … to point where it consumed me, a wee bit too much. This is definitely reflected in the tone of some of my more recent posts.

It took me that long to get to the nuts and bolts of it all. It really is surprising what you find the more you dig. Or maybe not, considering human nature ;)

I generally ignore some of blogging's top dogs, and try to accentuate the positive, but after 1.5 years on the social web I can understand why you've written a piece like this. I can certainly get behind the "beyond buzz and into results" message. And there sure as hell is a ton of bullshit out there and people doing their best to game the system.

Also, I can really get behind what Pam wrote: "Building a community takes time and investment. Purchasing fake fans is cheating, unethical and wrong." I completely agree with that and honestly wonder why anyone would want fake fans.

Me? I still don't know crapola, but I learn every day from wise people like you. And guess what? My business is growing like never before :) Maybe in another 1.5 years I can fill more than a thimble with my knowledge.

Take care, Mr. Dopping.

Drop box is great and it's become my place to dump stuff I want to deal with in the evening, oh and Evernote is great for that too ;) Not checking email first thing in the morning usually saves me, because morning is my time to focus. I'm worthless after 2:00 pm.

I love Jason's terminology: Digital Hoarder ... is that a good thing or a disorder? ;)

@Geoff Reiner I guess I wasn't being 100% honest. It's more about not obsessing over the possibility of failure. Compared to the anxiety-ridden stages I was dealing with years ago, I've come a long way.

Barriers based on that ugly four letter work that begins with an "F" … Fear!

"Truth is, they’re quite easy to overcome… but only if you want them to be."

So true and I really do believe embracing discomfort and drop-kicking fear is, well the best thing ever ... :)

Hi Ralph,

Happy B-Day you fellow Maup-y um, Middle Age Urban Professional. We are very close in age, but heck man, I'm just getting started … how about you?

That's a nice little story and that is one good looking Yorkie. My in-laws had one (I think he lived to be almost 20), but that dog was the most spoiled dog on the planet. The tiny thing basically ruled the house. Plus he never looked in the mirror, because he was always trying to start it up with other dogs four times his size ;)
