Wow, amazing advice for job seekers! I'm going to share this in my HAPPO Michigan Report next week. Obviously all your hard work paid off. And I agree that it's all about relationships. Congrats and best of luck at the new job!
Can't express how much I love this girl! Happy to see @ericajmoss featured here. She's MORE than worth a follow and someone anyone in the PR/social media world should get to know. Plus, she posts hilarious pics of Mona the Bulldog. ;)
@ginidietrich I'm still reading my blogs weekly. :)
I love your honesty and all the business examples you continue to share. That's all. :)
Not sure I ever want that corner office, but I know I want to figure out what "my all" is (hat tip to Heather Whaling for her "Define it All" project"). And "my all" definitely includes balancing a family and a career. I don't know in what capacity yet because I'm all of one month into being a new parent, but I'm determined to find balance and to make it work. And I don't plan on getting rid of my management position simply because I'm now a parent.
@ginidietrich Wow, crazy. It just boggles my mind that people still don't get it and don't recognize that their method is completely flawed.
With the enormous amounts of blog posts and articles that exist about how PR pros do pitching/relationship building wrong and how they SHOULD be doing it, you would think this problem would have ceased over the last year or two. But, it seems like it has stayed pretty consistent.
I simply don't understand WHY. Who is to blame? Partly the PR person, but what about the boss or manager? These PR pros must be getting poor guidance from somewhere. It infuriates me (as I know it does to many of us in this industry) that we are still having these same conversations.
That's why I'm so passionate about initiatives like Help a PR Pro Out (HAPPO). I feel like we can't complain about the problem unless we're doing something to provide education on the topic (like you do in this post). I just don't know what it will take to make these issues go away!
@jeffespo Congrats, Jeff!
@JGoldsborough Exactly. :)
I wish I had this advice when I left my first job out of college! I was terrified that my managers were going to hate me (luckily they were very understanding).
I would also add that you should go in with a plan of what you want to discuss. Don't memorize a speech, but know exactly what you want to say so you don't get tripped up. And, if you had a great experience, be sure to let your employer know that! It's also best to leave a company on good terms, if you can.
Thanks for sharing these, Arik.
I mentioned this in the PR G+ community - I think the key to making sure any G+ community is valuable is having someone (or a team) manage and moderate the content. Otherwise, they'll turn into LinkedIn Groups that have become full of spam and self promotion because no one moderates them.
You are the perfect example of how companies who do an excellent job using social media to build relationships with current/potential customers can create brand ambassadors...and produce sales! I can attest that I started paying more attention to WP because you always talked about the company online. And, my husband ordered his five pairs to try out from WP because I started talking about the company to him! He will likely order a new pair soon.
Great story/case study. Thanks for sharing!
One trip per month is MUCH more manageable! Congrats on all the growth and success this year. Wishing you the happiest of holidays!
Love it! So much better than the traditional holiday card. Wishing you and your family a very happy holiday!
