@hessiej @AmyMccTobin OK, so 'secret government' is definitely going too far.
I'm picturing a world where randomness becomes so rare that we seek it out. So it will be intentional randomness. We are officially in Wonderland.
What a lot to think about. I am normally an optimist who believes that there are more good people than bad; when it comes to privacy I am a total cynic. Because I am a fairly open person, I might not be as troubled as other people are, but when I read Julie Pippert's comment on your FB wall earlier this week stating that EVERYONE has something to hide it really resonated with me.
Here's the thing: we all know that the Government leaks like a sieve; when does personal information start leaking too. I listened to Mike Rogers, the Head of the House Intelligence Committee, argue that NOTHING was done without the proper approval through the justice system. I hope so, but again, totally cynical.
The reality is - we can't stop progress - I understand and am excited by what data analysis can do for marketing/product development etc. It's awesome for companies, and for the consumer. I enjoy Amazon because so often it brings things I wouldn't have known about to my attention. BUT, I was totally creeped out when I read about an app in Entrepreneur that uses your personal information to match you with friends of friends to create 'group dates.' At what point do we eliminate all chance from our life?
@dbvickery I bet you were an A student Brian - catching up on all your homework after vacation.
@dbvickery @hessiej @AmyMccTobin @Danny Brown My Tuesday's booked solid - Danny we have that one call scheduled, but otherwise I'm free. It's Mr. Big time you need to coordinate with Brian.
@dbvickery Ha Ha Ha. You made me laugh out loud on a day I wasn't laughing much. So glad you're back from slacking off.
Yes, I think brands deserve to have a sense of humor, although I think they did a pretty decent job... it's already fading from memory.
@Danny Brown @dbvickery @hessiej and me!
I love this post - we all get so busy with self promotion and spurting out our own thoughts (myself included), that I think we often fry the creativity right out of ourselves. No time to just BE, and get inspired, and then CREATE. A while back @DannyBrown (yes, even I am sick of saying how brilliant he is) post this on our Friday Finds http://thearccompany.com/friday-finds-sunday-edition-creativity-the-only-weapon-against-indifference/
I go back to it again and again for a reminder.
@acjandler @AmyMccTobin Thank goodness there is another smart person out there who agrees with me!!! And your point about the effect this could have on a small business is a fine one that I should have made myself. We have talked many times on the Social Justice series about the double standards brands vs. people are held to, but what seems to be missed here is that companies are made up of people. If the company, or even a franchise is hurt and sales slump, PEOPLE lose their jobs... and they're usually the people at the bottom of the totem pole.
I am with you 100%, and thanks for coming by!
@Rose Brown You know what's interesting about that Rose, they're known as the 'connected generation.' You now have me thinking about a post called the Connected/Disconnected generation.
@KenMueller Yes, some of my friends that I happen to work with think I have no sense of humor on the subject, but I really think that this goes beyond a prank. It's one thing if you're joking around in a plumbing shop, but this company's business is FOOD. How would you feel if you ate those tacos? I wouldn't find it funny.
And yes, you are right as far as the need for more clear communication to employees about what is and isn't allowed.
@ginidietrich Well thank you ms Gini for coming over here. You know, you're totally right... it's why GREAT managers start on the ground floor even if they're just visiting. When my old mentor was promoted to Exec VP of our entire company, he went down on the mill floor and learned how to tuft carpet with the 30 year veterans. It's why he made me fly out to SoCal for one week every month so that I was ON that factory floor, even though my job was VP Sales.
And, this year I finally hired @Susan Silver to teach me Wordpress Website Development and now we're moving into SEO from the ground up; I should have done it years ago. My thought then was that I didn't have time - now I realize how much more I've learned this year when I understand how stuff works from the inside. I should have known better. You're right - you have to know how to do the work. It's like the age old conversation/argument between Architects and Contractors - things look different on paper.
@Soulati | B2B Social Media Marketing @AmyMccTobin @belllindsay OK - the 90's. God, are the pure advertising guys STILL not concerned with results??? I haven't worked directly with those large ad agencies. My sister @Judy McCloskey could tell you of some current issues with large, traditional agencies doing social with no apparent goals or measurements in mind. If you'd come to Snarketing last night missy, you would have met her.
@Soulati | B2B Social Media Marketing @belllindsay Wow. By advertising I'm thinking you mean marketing, or are you talking straight up creative advertising folks? Danny always talks about performance marketing, and I don't understand how on earth any advertising/communications/marketing firm isn't held accountable to goals.
@Soulati | B2B Social Media Marketing @acjandler I missed this yesterday - want to catch up Monday or Tuesday? I think I invited you to Snarketing last night, but if I didn't I blame @Randy Bowden .
@belllindsay @AmyMccTobin @Jayme Soulati OK. .. here's your homework assignment - you can't utter ONE single self deprecating statement for 24 hours. We all know you're brilliant.
@acjandler I think we need more of you in our 'marketing bubble.' :) I think you're spot on - it's all blended, but the PR skills are still MOST necessary. I am going to hunt you down on G+ and invite you to Snarketing.
@belllindsay @RebeccaTodd @AmyMccTobin @samfiorella Well, I already KNEW Sam was a sociopath so I was fully prepared.
@belllindsay Yep - it makes sense to me. WHY call it anything? It's, as @Jayme Soulati says - hybrid marketing/pr whatever. YES, PR skills are needed, and very precise ones for very precise situations, but integration is needed more than anything. Thx for stopping by.
Awesome. I think Hangouts have changed things for me considerably - seeing people's mannerisms adds an extra layer of intimacy. When I finally met @samfiorella IRL last month in San Francisco, he just refused to believe it wast he first time we'd met. We have been friends online for years. I don't even know WHEN I met him, but it sure wasn't like meeting a new person for lunch.
What I try to do, though, is pick up the phone and TALK to the people I feel close to on Social, even if I can't see them IRL. Gini and I have never met in person, but I don't know how many times we've talked, or emailed... and I consider her one of my best social friends.
People are real, or people are fake, or shitty, or delightful... and if you're communicating as much as we all do with each other, the real person comes out. You can't hide it. Even in type.
@hessiej @Soulati | B2B Social Media Marketing @Danny Brown @AmyMccTobin @AmyMccTobin Awe.... as must as I like to bust his chops, being compared to Danny's blogging is a pretty awesome compliment.
Frankly, we're all making me sick with all this love.
