@RichardRamos instead of being so rude why don't you enlighten us with your opinion! Christsake! This is Tylers wish not what will happen. Reggie does want to trade down, Bills do need a QB it is a possible.. and Mingo would be a great option to have at 8... It is a good mock draft!
@Indy! It is amazing what happens when WRs run their routes and catch the ball, suddenly the QB looks amazing and where was when they don't the QB looks awful. Far to much blame was put on Carson (who is running WCO for the very first time in his NFL career). Carson is a very good QB and without him we would be truly terrible!
The keys to this game was the OL and WR finally working out what to do, wearing out the very large Steeler DL with going no huddle and in the 4th their OL getting all sorts of pressure, because for once our defense was having proper breaks and managing to catch their breath.
Although, i still wasn't to impressed with our running game. Yep Dmac got over 100 yards but apart from that we actually had another slow game, however what that huge run did do was make the Steelers defense think about both the passing game and running game... and when D's do that, it all becomes a little easier. The 1st 2 weeks, all they had to do was protect the pass as they knew the runs were coming to nothing and like with Pittsburgh on Sunday who couldnt run on us, we lost!
As Hue Jackson rightly said, you run to win games and you throw to score points!
@nilbymouth @raider lifer Really, getting rid of Bob Wylie could be costly. I completely understand that Reggie wants his own guys but Bob Wylie was a special OL coach! Getting rid of him was a serious mistake!!!
@Harder2000 I completely agree with you in respect of what we do in the draft although I am not to sure with the best way in getting extra picks. I guess if we are picking 2/3/4, we will indeed try and trade down round after round. I think we are still in need of a 2nd round draft pick next year. So it is certainly something we'll be looking to do in the 1st round. We can get a quality CB & LB.
However, my draft crystal ball is pretty foggy with who maybe available in 2014 draft as a QB! but by then we'll know if Pryor will be cut out for the job!
Wheeler is playing how Curry should play if he actually had any brains! He doesn't make stupid plays, doesn't hit people a couple of seconds after the play has finished and he tackles like a demon!! That hit on Tannehill was superb! So close to getting a sack! He is also pretty good at pass coverage.. got it all really.
@Indy! I actually, considering the pressure he was put under Miami didnt actually record 1 sack! Which is incredible and determent to Carson! He isn't the most mobile of QB's but he showed his strength in standing up under pressure on quite a few occations plus the odd scramble..
How he got out of the mess when he almost made the first down with his run was really good. I actually thought he made the 1st down.
I know Dmac is pretty untouchable when it people being critical but for the life of me I can not see how people are blaming Carson Palmer for the ball thrown directly at him and that Dmac dropped!! Come on people, think clearly on this.
Yes, there was a delay on the pass and I do not know for sure but I guess that Karlos Dansby, who had an amazing game. appeared in his CP's eye line and he wanted to make sure that Dmac had got clear enough away from him before throwing.
@Indy! We seem to have the same hymn sheet.. I am reading the problems almost exactly as you are!
@Harder2000 @ukraider78 I suppose for me, there are far more glaring problems than at QB? The secondary is woeful! I mean Tannerhill picked on Lee all afternoon long and with nothing very clever.. generally just simple curls and cut backs on the edge...
So what would you do? Would you dump Carson for Matt Barkley or which ever the best QB avail in the draft next year, trade for someone else, pay silly money for a FA like Flynn who lost his job to a rookie? These are all genuine questions.. In my opinion we have to draft the best CB avail in the draft next year. Invest in a lock down CB. QB for me isn't the biggest concern.
By the way - Wheeler looks excellent! Could be a great pick up!
I am not in the camp that is going to bash Carson, yes he could have hit Dmac with that easy pass, but, all decent QB's do that. Rivers had Gates free last week and completely screwed up the throw and I do not think his receivers help him. Dmac dropped the ball on that pass... it was 1st and goal, he could have got a TD, to the 1yd line making it easier, but, he dropped it. It is far to easy to just blame Carson,
The OL is atrocious. Now lets think. We know McFadden is fantastic, we know from seeing other teams play that the ZBS does work - successfully. So quite frankly it boils down to 1 thing! Our OL just doesn't get it.
Now, when I see other teams running the ZBS you see one thing... The OL moves either left or right, not forward and then creates 1 gap which the RB exploits. The last 2 games all I have seen from our OL is a mess. They still all sort of just push forward but at a slightly diagonal angle which gives our RBs no chance whatsoever as there just isn't a gap.
For me, this is down to coaching and the ability of our players to learn. They have had months to try and teach and remember this and quite frankly, it appears they have learnt nothing! Unless we can establish the run then only thing we can rely on is Carsons arm, which as good as I think he is (he is actually on his way to over 5000 yards) . It is going to be easy for defenses and all those experts who said we would only win 4/5 games and we all got rather agitated with their lack of respect for us, well they could have been generous in their predictions!
BUT, there is a silver lining.... remember that Allen was appointed quite late and a lot of the decent OC had well, gone. I would assume that if things continue the way they are that Reggie and DA will be looking for a new OC come December.....
Chin up guys! We are used to this now. We all just have to be patient. The road to success is long and it had only just started! It is going to be really, really hard! But stay with it!
@Indy! @workhomeunion Completely agree with you Indy! When Knapp let the shackles of Carson, when it was all a little bit to late and he basically had a minutes offence (same in the end of the 2nd qtr as well, when we were only a Dmac elbow from a TD) and we were camped in our half he played it perfectly, spread the ball to all the receivers. I think Hagan, DHB, Myers, Streater, Dmac all had catches on the last drive.. and then finishes it off with a TD and 2 point conversion both to our UDFA rookie WR deserves credit! Not a paragraph on why he isn't the QB of the Raiders!
He is a very very good QB and without doubt the best we have had since Gannon, maybe better than Gannon as well, as he had some of the best playmakers in the history of the game to throw at.
Yep, he is passive as a QB but he knows that our WR are pretty much all young! Blasting them, will do nothing for confidence and they maybe scared into making more mistakes! Let coaches blast them, he needs to give them confidence and let them know that he trusts them. In my opinion.
When John Condo went down this is the most significant moment. No question. Condo plays the whole game & the outcome would probably be extremely different.. Really what was Goethel meant to do? He doesn't play on the OL, ever, he doesn't come close to snapping a ball. My question would be that as LilWiz was active but not starting, why wasn't he given the job? He of course can practice on the sidelines pretty much constantly, he is used to snapping a ball and then facing up an on rushing defender. This was very strange for me.
And we must also consider, that despite the Chargers continually having great field position that we restricted them to only 1 touch down. I thought that the defense was incredible yesterday, Really came to play. Wheeler, McClain, Burris were all strong and the DL held its own. The DB's had a tough time of it but this isn't a surprise to most of us but compared to last years defense it is vastly improved.
The offense was one dimensional, in the fact we really only used DMac but it wasn't 1D in how we used him. If I had game tape it would be interesting to see how the Chargers were doing against our WR. How open were they, was the only option for Carson, Dmac as he managed to get continually open.
I am not worried about Streater, he is an UDFA, he was only starting due to injury and I think there were signs that he could well turn out to be a good WR for us.
Another thing! Carson! He didnt actually do anything stupid. Ok, he was close to being picked off when he under threw to Hagan but apart from that I do not recal any trademark stupid throws.
Remember people, this is as close to an Expansion Team as it can get without being a new team! This was the first week of a new era for everyone! It would be almost impossible to expect complete fluidity but signs are there (apart from on Special Teams, shocking!!! and I am not just talking about the punts & Goethel) that it can work and we can be good!
@nilbymouth I'm inclined to agree with you and ford slipping back. I know he was injured a bit last year but when he did play he wasn't that impressive. He needs to step it up. 3rd year now and needs to show a improvement, like dub did last year.
@Raidah @ukraider78 In some ways i am happy with what happened with Criner yesterday. With his success in camp, it got to his head a bit, asking for the extra cash which he quite rightly wasn't given. Yesterday was welcome to the NFL! The catch that he dropped from ML was a perfect example. He was already thinking ahead,
I hope he gathers himself now and refocuses! He certainly has the potential like Moore did last year but Moore never took his mind away from the game..
*a lot of questions.. Ok... I'm going back to bed. :)
Whoops.. Last night answered and lot of questions! Can't blame that on 3/4am.. now midday!
Pretty much the game I saw as well Asher and I am actually really not fussed about the shutout, if it wasnt for King being pretty awful at holding the football with Punts and Carmona inability to actually kick the ball in a straight line we'd of had 6 on the board and won..
Remember we went from Dmac to our 4th RB in Miller who is truly a short yardish bruiser. If Goodson and Jones had of been fit I would have expected a completely different game as really we had nothing to offer in the running game.
I have seen the INT a couple of times on replay and as much as this is an ill advised pass from Palmer I would also put a lot of the blame on Ford. The ball was catchable and seemed to me to go through his hands on the way to an INT, yes it was double coverage but we have seen Ford make these clutch plays in the past and there was no need for Palmer to assume that Ford would go on to have a pretty awful day, maybe his worst in a Raider uniform? but it is what it is...
We know what the offence can do, we know the weapons Knapp and Palmer have..With Dmac fit, Moore, DHB, Reece, Ford, (maybe I can add Streater to the list) and if Criner takes his training form to the season, we'll be ok.
I really wanted to see what our brand new D would look like and how if we showed any improvements in discipline and I have to say this WOW!!!!
The change was quite amazing - only 5 penalties for 37 yds compared, from what I remember not 1 false start (this could be wrong, it was 3/4am here) and the Defense was, well, exciting. Blitzes, multiple fronts, good tackling, great run def. Coverage from DVD and Bartell could have been better but nothing to really moan about, and kept a dangerous Cowboys offence well away from the in zone.
People will moan about Pryor but he is our 3rd string QB, not sure what people want him to be. He is young, he will learn. I just wish he would throw the ball with more power. Considering he is such a big man he seriously needs to work on his arm strength and technique. Asher was continually pointing out that the balls nose was down. I did get uncomfortable with his bad throws and then relying on the run. To me this is what we were slating Tebow for last year but a lot of the Raidernation, on Twitter, started getting all excited with comparisons to Vick! Pryor is not even in the same league as Vick. He is well and truly in a Tebow mold. Bad arm, relies on his legs. Bad combo.
Anyways, I'm away for a couple of weeks so I am likely to miss the next couple of games! Will be checking in Asher and reading up.... looking forward to it.
Chin up Nation! Last night answered gave a lot of answers into a positive future!
This I like... I think I said a few months ago that I would like it if we traded Murphy but I doubted his value. If we got either and 4th/5th round then this would be great.
He was certainly on the bubble and the WR contest looks in camp looks to be very strong! Why not get something for him.
Not only have we got more cap space now (reading estimates of 6m) but now we have more picks and we know Reggie likes his picks.
I wonder.... if we could see Mike Mitchell traded?
this is fantastic news for the Raiders.. Not only has he been the most consistent players on the defence since he was drafted (nnamdi was thrown to so little, not sure it counts) but he has probably been the most reliable player on the whole team in that time.
As you say Asher he is yet to be a star... but as the much maligned Hue Jackson said, and in this, it is very true. We do not shout about the safety position. It is not a position that gets a lot of mentions but Branch is one of the best Safeties in the NFL. (not exact words but very similar)
I believe he is one of the top 4 safeties in the league and I am thankful that this hasn't really been highlighted as I think, when you look what the Chargers paid Weddle and that Branch is a better player, we got away with a bargain!.
I can't stress how much I love this!
@AsherMathews Maybe, you are correct in saying that he isn't as good at this point in his career but what you have is a player who doesn't miss games and gets yards (small yards per carry, yes, but Knapp actually likes this). Now, he would without doubt be backup to Dmac which will mean he should get less carries than in his time with Bengals thus meaning the should be able to keep his production at a high standard.
If he was a number 1 running back then I would have quite a few red flags.. but as he would be back up I really don't have any! In fact. We need a change of pace RB.. Goodson, Jones are burners and putting them in for Dmac doesnt change the plays at all. Benson will add another dimension.
And you say about do we want him more than Goodson? Goodson is fantastic on Twitter and good for the fans but as a player, we honestly haven't seen anything to wow us. Benson has and would be a better backup for Dmac than Mike but I could see us carrying all of them. With Dmac liable to go down, we'll need Goodson and Jones as well!
Benson is just a good move as far as I can tell.
@Harder2000 @StevefromLA personally I don't think Mitchell will make the team. All these qualities about hard hitting and being good with TE completely disappeared last year and he became an obvious target and he gave up some massive plays last year.
Rmac & DA don't care about previous drafts etc, this is their team and as he isn't even getting a chance to practice he is going to find it hard to impress. I would maybe try and guess that Henry, who is almost exactly the same size as Branch could be coached up into being his direct replacement.
For me, I am not a fan of Mitchell and actually would like to see him out of the team (along with Barnes) but he has his place which is a shame,
So, I actually agree.
The question mark will then be, who will lose their spot should we pick up Benson. This would be tricky as all of the RB's behind Dmac have amazing qualities. I like them all as Raiders.
