@x tina x Sharapova was definitely an aggressive returner even when she was younger. She just wasn't as physically strong and consistently accurate as she is now.
Seles had quality movement, but only Graf could come close to matching her power in her peak. But as time progressed, many others like Pierce, Capriati, Davenport, Venus, Serena matched her power.
@x tina x Seles would struggle in this era too.
Her serve wasn't big enough to avoid aggressive returning. Almost everyone is an aggressive returner now just like her.
@Northernboy Yup, it's different enough to not have teenagers not under 19 be true consistent Top 5-10 or even Top 20 players.
Every year the game slightly gets more about movement and/or being strong physically, where being the new hard hitting sensation is no longer the sole requirement.
The defense of the women's game has gone up bit by bit, with more "turnaround points" than ever before, getting to where the men are today.
@Patrick of La Verne Exactly.
@Tony Lee Crawford is a fine player with a quality serve, but I don't see her as Top 5 material yet.
@MashaFan Because Vika actually is much closer to beating Serena that Maria is nowadays, lol.
At least there's a potential for a compelling match with Azarenka for Serena, even when Serena is at or near her best. With Sharapova, well, lately, that has long, long gone away.
@MashaFan Sigh, your reading sometimes I wonder. One "Djtee1266" said "when is the last time she won a set.......a set against Serena."
Oy, lol. Can't you just ever read al the way.
@ZackM12 Hingis had a lot of tenacity actually, she just had her own limitations being 5'6, as well as her unwilliness to improve her serve consistently. Both make no mistake that she had that tenacity.
Aga is a way different matchup and was right there with Maria on indoor slow hard court surface that's almost as tailor made for Maria as clay is nowadays.
Serena, it won't matter because she'll get tight like always in any moment and give up the break, but for Vika, she'll be right there all the way and could dominate Vika if Vika is off a bit.
@ZackM12 The real test to see if that serve worked is if Aga plays at a high level (if they both get there), and whether she can do that against stronger, smarter returners in Serena or Vika.
@MashaFan Bhahaha, Masha Fan can't get even her own facts right about her favorite player. The last time Maria won a set against Serena was actually Charleston in '08, and even after winning Melboune, she still couldn't muster up the mental toughness to push Serena in the final set. Plus, the rest is history there.
@shyra @the queen of tennis Vika isn't scared of Serena, and neither is Aga......Maria on the other hand, well, yeah.
@MashaFan Read above:
The "queen of tennis" person said it was going to be azarenka vs Sharapova in the final. I simply said, "So, someone's ignoring Serena."
Lol, keep to jump on me without seeing the whole story, You are such great entertainment as always. Make me laugh like Maria's great celebration tonight.
@MashaFan Not all that certain Aga isn't in the final either. She fears no one and is moving along quite nicely.
@MashaFan Lol, I wasn't the one to bring up other players, look at my first comment.
Lol, you always concentrate on me all the time Masha fan club person. You have got to read all comments first before reacting with the same tired script, lol.
@MashaFan lol, poor MashaFan, bothered because I speak the truth. 2013, new year, and same fan as always.
@MashaFan @shyra lol, MashaFan always not reading all my comments well........I've complemented Maria fully as usual. I just tell the whole picture, easily.
@shyra @the queen of tennis Judge what, the scoreline, lol?
It's if she can even push Serena instead of being scared whenever a pressure moment comes forth.
@shyra @the queen of tennis 2012 Australian Open. You forgot so soon? ;)
