I always enjoy listening to Sloane's interviews. Unfortunately Serena has about 60 pounds and 6 inches on her. The chances she can defuse Serena's power are slim...
If I were Serena (aka the love child of Deloris Van Cartier and Lou Ferrigno), I would stay far far away from Roddick's sinking ship.
@Bin McGrin @johnslip She is the worst on this comment page. I get the sense she is shrooming while writing what she wants to say in her native language in Google Translate because it's certainly never coherent English, and often missing simple modifiers.
@Richard slander is a spoken defamatory statement. Get your law right, Dick.
@lovetennis @Northernboy I love how Serena's fan label anyone who doesn't prostrate at the sound of her name a hater or disrespectful. The reading comprehension on here is pathetic--to steal a word from usopenrockz. It's really sad and unfortunate that not only can people not have differing opinions on here, you can't even have an opinion because it's often poorly read and misconstrued. I'll tell you why Serena beats most of the players on the womens tour: shes's a man baby! With those 18 inch biceps she should join the ATP and give some of the ladies with class and estrogen a chance at Wimbledon. Best of luck, Petra. You'll need it against that she-hulk!
Mardy has always had a better all around game than Roddick, particularly his backhand. I wish he has Andy's confidence.
In my opinion, he was lucky to win a grand slam, and if not for his mega serve and will-to-win he would never have even been in the top 20. I have always hated his backhand and absolutely agree his forehand is overrated. He plays a ton of defense from far behind the baseline when he is not a great defensive player nor a very natural mover on the court. Someone mentioned his fitness earlier, and frankly I disagree. He looks fit to me. When he lifted his shirt, he is pretty ripped around his core. Roddick definitely maximized his potential and now the field is too complete and more talented than him, and his serve lacks the same pop. After watching Harrison's last match. I really fear he doesn't go the way of Roddick. His forehand was way too heavy, lacked any sting, and appears to be morphing into a Roddick-eque crutch rather than a weapon.
I really thought Steffi accomplished this against Zvereva in the French final, but I guess it was just a double bagel beat down. I still favor Serena by a lot next round, but if Shvedova uses this as motivation perhaps she can take a set off Serena or at least make it interesting. She has the power, let's see if the control is with her on center court against Serena and her speed...
Werk, Sloane!!!! Simon is a wang and you are awesome!
@Northernboy Martina said it years ago about his forehand. I believe the gist was, "he'll never win this Wimbledon and/or beat federer because he can't flatten out a forehand." She was right; I forget the stats but at one point Ferrer had 22 FH winners to Roddicks 6.
Fed laughed as he cut the guy a check. Just "thank you" written in the memo.
@Northernboy What's with the braided, powerhouse blondes and their crazy fathers? Dokic, Lucic, and the most successful of the lot, Mary Pierce, all had careers stifled by abusive fathers.
@sportmac Sampras faced tougher competition than Novak, rafa, Murray, roddick, Hewitt, safin, Agassi, Nalbandian, et al? Who? Chang? Rios? Magnus Norman? Lol
@Northernboy @Norrin Radd Nalbandian at YEC in Madrid, 2005, was unreal tennis too; power, accuracy, and angles up the arse. I think he was the last to beat #1,2, &3 in a tourney.
What about a challenge system?
@roylemorgan Lukas hit 60+ winners. Fact. There is no excuse that can be made for someone doing that against the best mover in the game. But you're right, people will try...
@Norrin Radd That's a good one too. At every chance he just ripped the ball. I'm surprised Rafa hit so much heavy spin on the forehand side. The ball was bouncing right into the strike zone of Rosol's 6'5 frame.
That was one of the sickest displays of ball striking I've ever seen, on par with Safin d. Sampras at the US Open and Pierce crushing Graf at the 1994 French Open. Rafa definitely had his opportunities, but in all fairness Rosol played like a top 20 player on his "A" game. Homeboy was hitting 90+ mph backhands down the line....Reedick! Also, he served like a maniac. I really hope he uses this win to bolster his confidence and make his way up the ranks. This was definitely a Soderling-esque breakout performance. Well done, Lukas!!!
Steffi had so much class. Even during the trophy ceremony she was kind and complimentary of Hingis post-tantrum. She won so many titles, yet still had a humility and respect for the sport that some contemporary champions lack.
@orvillelloyddouglas @KGM Well I think it is important as a role model to be proud of who you are and let younger players see you as a positive influence. Aside from Martina and Billie Jean, gay athletes are typically pretty quiet about their sexuality. I know there are gay men on tour, but the fear of losing sponsors or reaction from ignorant men (i.e. Justin Gimelstob) in the locker room prevent these guys from coming out.
