We saw a small, but noticeable, shift in mindset from offense to defense last year (especially when compared to the season before that). I'm hoping we expand on that with Kawhi's development  and Danny Green's experience.

And you should mention Manu as the third best defender. He has great hands on defense and is most definitely fearless and draws a charge like no other.

1 year, 8 months ago on Danny Green: Defense is biggest key

Reply

Well... he would probably make the same comment about the spurs. There's a shot to win the West (1st seed) and get to the WCF; but after that it's hard to envision anything other than an injury to Durant/Kobe that will keep the Thunder/Lakers from the finals.

We have to get used to this rhetoric all season given the way the season ended last year with many people citing a passing of the torch of Tim/Tony/Manu to Durant/Westbrook/Harden.

On top of all that, we didn't make any significant off-season moves that would garner us with more respect as title contenders.

Let's hope for a remarkable emergence of Kawhi, a healthy Tim and Manu, and a F/O move or two to better our chances.

 @Aaron Torres  @JMattHicks Aaron --

I think you make his point when you state "12 weeks ago, we were STILL questioning if it'd ever click for LeBron"

Now he is the greatest player of all time (essentially that's almost what this argument boils down to)? JMattHicks has it right, The Dream Team is still the best assembled team in basketball history and not even LeBron in all his glory can change that.

And your argument about not being able to escape the media these days because of twitter/blogs/NBAtv etc....Is pointless. Whether its 1970 or 2012 - a man can retire in solitary if he should choose to. He doesn't have to pick up his phone, turn on a tv or hop on his laptop if he doesn't want to. So after a game, if LeBron can't get off Twitter or what have you, he can blame himself (if there is even any blame to be had) for any psychological damage he should incur from it.

LeBron had an excellent year. But it is too early for this argument.

When we drafted him I know TP and the guys took him to dinner and the Spurs staff showed him the facilities and all that and when he left I remember him sounding VERY hungry and determined to make this team. I've been his fan since then.

This highlight reel makes me an even bigger fan. He's like a mini-Dwayne Wade minus the physical stature.

@Spursfan66  @yowhatupT Spursfan -- you didn't mention defense at all, and my point was that Durant and LeBron BOTH have tools to be great defensively but simply don't have the will or determination to do so. They are scorers. I was never saying Kawhi would have to be as good a scorer as LeBron or Durant to be a superstar.. and that was my very point! Using GREAT defense and good offense... Kawhi will be a superstar in my very humble opinion.

Kawhi also has GAWDY length although Durant has a couple inches on him in both height and wingspan. But again, this is my very point. Durant should be known as a lock-down defender but instead he's just a great scorer.

Kawhi WILL be known as a great defender and within a few years, probably won't be too shabby at putting the ball in the basket either.

Jumping ability? His max vertical was 33 inches I believe? Compared to Durant's 34, maybe? That is ur biggest concern?

That was a very weird response -- I feel like you didn't read anything I wrote but it's all good.

2 years ago on How Kawhi spent his summer | July

Reply

@yowhatupT Not at all - I was actually trying to make the point that he will be just as good (if not better) defensively than those guys.

Great defense/good offense = Kawhi

Great offense/good defense = Other Superstars

I was trying to say that I truly believe Kawhi will rise to All-Star status in a few years when his offense is developed even more and by that time -- he should be one of the best perimeter defenders in the league as well.

I don't care how crazy I sound -- mark my words!!!!

2 years ago on How Kawhi spent his summer | July

Reply

@yowhatupT I can understand that -- not to be rude I just expected someone of this blog who follows the Spurs up close and personal to see the work ethic and tools that he's had since high school and see that his potential lies somewhere in the stratosphere.

He has the potential to be an all around player and transcend to superstar status in a way that is uncharacteristic of young great players - using great defense and good offense.

He is defense first but without a doubt has the tools to be something fantastic offensively. Same can't be said for other forwards like Durant/LeBron/Mello who should all have been lock down defenders from the get-go but instead opted for great offense and good defense (or in the case of Mello, no defense). When it comes to Kawhi, don't see any facet of his game going stagnant because his basketball IQ, maturity level and work ethic is (and always has been) impressive. So things like passing and court vision will come if he wants it to come, and I have no doubt in his determination, drive and will to become the greatest basketball player he can become.

Remember he was born around the time MJ won his first championship; he has 5 - 7 years before he is considered to be in his "prime".

But if he isn't, I hope Patty Mills gets a good share; I was impressed with him everytime he was on the court. Nando and Manu are both combo guards and would probably have their fair share at the point (Manu more so, unless Nando really comes out shining).

Gary Neal is too small to be good defensively at the 2 guard, and he isn't good enough to play the point consistently (at least not better than Parker, Mills, Manu and hopefully Nando). I like Gary Neal for what he can do: score and provide a spark off the bench. But he is also just as expendable as Blair and Bonner and I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up trading him.

2 years, 2 months ago on Parker becomes leader, Spurs better for it | May

I don't think getting Batum is too far fetched, and he would fit our system very well and have instant chemistry with Diaw and Parker.

Neal/Blair/Bonner: I don't know when this happened to me, honestly, I was a staunch advocate of trading the often-labeled "defenseless" Bonner - but he is good at what he does and provides a valuable service at a great price. You guys can say his defensive numbers are just skewed and whatever... but I disagree. I genuinely saw a difference in his defense this year.

With all that said, I wouldn't mind seeing Batum here if it meant losing Blair and/or Neal. Actually, Batum can effectively play both of their positions very well (assuming Neal is playing his true position of a 2guard).

I may of just realized  why Pop has been so adamant about Neal's switch to the PG spot despite the emergence of Patty Mills.

He's too small for the 2 spot. Defensively he has no chance to compete (minute wise) with his fellow 2 guard teammates (Green, Manu).

Sure, he can score the ball. But it seems now like he is just one of many guys on our team that can shoot threes and penetrate in the lane effectively (Kawhi, Green, Jack, Manu, Tony)

@JohanBeijer I definitely agree about Manu. But Timmy, I didn't even think he played that bad in the series when he actually got touches. We kept saying "we're saving Timmy for the playoffs..." and then he rarely gets to play offensively. We ended up standing around waiting for Manu or Tony to make something happen. This year, however, has been much different. Timmy has gotten the ball on the first possession every playoff game thus far.

I agree, Kyle. Great coaching should enable us to take away 1 or 2 key things from both teams effectively but Clippers would be a little easier since their defense is nowhere near capable of stopping us the way we've been playing the last couple of months. I look for a sweep in round 2 if we play the Clips.

2 years, 2 months ago on Clippers or Grizzlies? | May

Well... the best teams in the league are sweeping their first round opponents (MIA, OKC, SAS) and I think we are inevitably going to play OKC in the WCF. But for 3 years now (KD era), we have shown that we match up well against OKC. We haven't faced them in the playoffs, but we have dominated them in the regular season and pretty convincingly on a couple occasions.

Even if we didn't have history on our side, I would pick the Spurs. But we do have history on our side, and I'm taking it.

As for the ECF, it's a little more cloudy. If Indiana keeps rolling I think that second round against Miami is going to be a very good series and I'm honestly not convinced that Boston can beat Philly in a 7 game series.

But, if I was a betting man...Miami and San Antonio in the finals.

I @JohanBeijer I, for one, saw the Spurs having a great team this year especially since we traded for Kawhi and all the TD stories I read during the lockout was about him working hard in the gym. No Disneyland, no beaches off the Spanish coast, no resorts...

Just TD, a gym, a ball... and often times NeNe lol

A lot of big men came to San Antonio over the lockout to work out with Timmy and Timmy has shown why he one of the top ten greatest players of all time... his winning focus. Few have it, even fewer have enough of it.

Kawhi has it, IMO, and I can't wait to see if he reaches full potential.

Why have a season at all? Why even play for a championship? Just make Lockout Seasons a 'draw' season and whoever gets the number 1 seed gets a top 5 pick in the draft.

Why should the league allow for a championship game if they plan on demoralizing the champions after the fact with an asterisk? It would be different if the lockout season somehow gave us a weird turnout like the Nuggets vs the Hawks in the finals - but the better teams ALWAYS make it. Before the season started, OKC. CHI and MIA were the obvious favorites Who were the favorites after the lockout season ended and teams are entering the playoffs? OKC, CHI and MIA.

So I call bullshit on the asterisk. The better team would win whether we played 30 game season or a 100 game season.

The problem was Hill wasn't supposed to be a bench player after 3 years. He was supposed to grow in his role and become our greatest asset off the bench (last year, Neal was our biggest player off the bench) and eventually fill that starting PG role; Hill showed that he wasn't 100% comfortable at running point. He was unsure when to penetrate and when to pass and never really played the PG exceptionally well unless he was aggressive.

I'm good with Patty Mills over Hill. They both play defense and they can both shoot. Where the differences arise is Patty Mills is a better distributor, IMO, and George Hill is the better penetrater (when he wants to be).

You didn't list steals. Kawhi is averaging 1.3 steals a game (Hill 0.8) and if there was a category for balls knocked loose he would definitely be somewhere towards the top.

And just like you touched on, I feel more confident playing KD, Kobe and LeBron knowing Kawhi is guarding them and not Hill

Spursforever -

I think you are flat out WRONG here. Offensively, he is better than Diaw in the post and dangerously close to being better than Tiago. Not to mention Dejuan is averaging about 10 ppg while only playing about 21 minutes a game. Dejuan's floater/teardrop has looked SPECTACULAR this year - how can you argue that? His patience in the post has gotten better and in all seriousness, he has improved in all facets of his game (except maturity... but he is getting there). As far a jump shot? Whatever. lol He can have one or not have one. TP didn't have a jump shot for years! Why do you want DeJuan Blair to be a shooter when we already have shooters? DeJuan needs to be the paint player he is.

I think he rebounds well for his size, but I don't think he is "excellent on rebounding". Same goes for defense.

Blair needs something special to make up for his height? Let's start with passing, basketball IQ, court awareness and not to mention he has GREAT hands. I've seem him pick the pocket of some great ball handlers including Kobe and Durant. Oh yeah... there were 2 Spurs that were in the top 30 last year in total steals (not spg). Guess who? Manu and Blair

2 years, 3 months ago on Spurs' Diaw: I am very happy to be with the Spurs | April

Reply

@JeffProjectSpurs  @Spursforever69 Jeff, I believe you are looking at it too simplistically.

I don't think Diaw's success is what dictates Blair's future as a Spur. Blair was always going to be "trade bait" if he didn't cut it this season. Like I said, he is great for the money he is being paid but as soon as that rookie contract is up, we'll really have to re-evaluate whether or not he is worth the money. A rookie contract with the Spurs is more or less an audition and if you don't grow in your role and become what we drafted you to be - see ya! In example: George Hill. He is a great player as well as an exceptional human being, but he never became the starting 1 or 2 guard that we needed him to be.

We were always going to get another 4/5 this season, and Blair's future as a Spur was in jeopardy whether we signed Diaw or Dawson.

With ALL THAT being said, I think Blair's fate lies within the 2012 playoffs - mark those words.

2 years, 3 months ago on Spurs' Diaw: I am very happy to be with the Spurs | April

Reply

@JeffProjectSpurs  @Spursforever69  I wouldn't say Blair is expendable; I think Blair is a great asset to have (especially for the price). Let's see what happens after his rookie contract is over, though. I think every season he has gotten better and smarter. He needs to mature a little more (IMO) but the fact still remains that he is our 3rd best post player behind Timmy and Tiago.

Diaw is a great shooter, passer and has surprised me defensively. I hope he continues to improve in our system and he can only get better. He also comes off well spoken and intelligent in this interview.

Most players either want money or a shot at a championship (sometimes both) and if you haven't been watching.....  we have tried to go after a lot of players that flat out turned us down for either money or a bigger market.

Hickson is being signed to the Warriors.. right? Pretty sure I heard that. Also heard that Turiaf was looking to go to Miami or Chicago (who isn't) so we aren't even a front runner. Dollar to donuts that we attempted to get one of these big men.

@CraigThomas  Stop pump faking? You're terrible. Every good shooter should have a good pump fake and owe it to themselves to develop somewhat of a mid range game to keep the defense honest. He penetrated twice (not "multiple times") and turned it over only one time. You are a typical fan trying to play GM with no facts. We didn't "match him up" against Dirk. Matt Bonner was forced to play 22 minutes last night and unfortunately had to take his licks (Blair played just as terrible on Dirk.. Where is your Blair bashing??) playing Dirk. If we had one more big man to come off the bench.. Bonner would have played a comfortable 12-15 minutes or so and would have probably never even been on the court at the same time as Dirk.

Think back to our last Championship year in 2007 - Bonner averaged 12 minutes a game and shot about 47% from the floor. THAT is the proper way to use Bonner, sparingly. If we were able to play Bonner 12 minutes a game or so, he would be effective at stretching the offense when Pop needs him to and he's very capable of coming off the bench and putting up some numbers when we need some help on offense.

Bonner is not a great defender.. DUH.. Captain Obvious.

@rtesoro440 Yes.. every fan in San Antonio is on the prowl for our next big man and I'm sure the F/O is as well. But to say we can't make ANY move until we get a big man is counter-productive.

Just like you said.. he IS an upgrade to Jefferson.

 @spurs123 Good stuff... agree mostly.

Though I will make this bold statement - Matt Bonner's defense has improved 200% from last season. He's actually moving his feet and getting off the ground challenging shots and even getting a couple blocks. I haven't liked Bonner for years because of his defensive liabilities.

I feel like someone got in his ear and said pick it up or see ya later, because the effort is there defensively.

Offensively, he's made some mistakes on the penetration but he just recently started showing a mid-range game. He should continue to improve and figure out how to get that mid range jumper or floater off  in the lane (he should get tips from Blair.. outstanding floater in the paint...)

I guess my bottom line is..with Bonner's defensive effort picking up, I'm absolutely okay with him staying with the team getting 12-15 minutes a game (much less than his 21 mpg avg last year)

Come on guys, we were never going to draft the next Tim Duncan late in the first round this coming 2012 draft.

We already drafted Ryan Richards, Davis Bertans and obtained the rights to Erazam Lorbek. 3 big men waiting to play with our organization. We don't need another young big. We need a PROVEN big via trade or free agency.

As for our PG position, I would love to see Manu run the point off the bench. Wishful thinking, I'm sure.

And how can anyone not like SJ over RJ??!!!! RJ may have developed into a better 3 pt shooter but come on people.. Neal, Bonner, Manu and even Green, Kawhi and TP have been sinking the 3's this year. We don't need more 3's to win in the playoffs. We need DEFENSE. Any move that betters us defensively without sacrificing crucial offense is the right move.

%@#& yeah!!!

SJ was talking about playing before the season and how hungry he is for a ring. Bucks didn't seem as hungry as he was tho.. sitting him most of the season.

I REALLY like this trade. Pop keeps SJ in check like none other and SJ already knows the system. If we were able to get Okafor too I'd be outrageously impressed with our F/O

We did it guys.. we unloaded RJ's God awful contract!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO

I hear Nets are tryna move Johan Petro... he seems like someone our F/O would get but i don't necessarily like him.

As for a PG... damn... options are limited. If we can work out a draft pick and JA for Flynn then I'm all for it

I hardly think they "gave" it away. Basketball is 48 minutes. It doesn't matter WHEN you make the mistake in the 23rd minute or the 48th minute....

If WE had lost that first game we could of had the same argument of "we gave it away" because we didn't make the right plays down the stretch. The point is...   in the NBA  you can't have a bad game and lose and say.."they didn't beat us... we gave it away"

You had a bad game and lost.. period.

We all knew this was a possibility bringing in TJ... "injury prone" was an understatement.

As people have stated...  trading for a PG would be silly unless we also got a big man in the trade. CJ has the tools but he plays too much like a rookie out there (so does JA for that matter). When they hit the court, they try to make something happen and over-think their play instead of letting the game come to them (i.e. Kawhi)

Considering our trade pieces, if we DO make a move... do not be surprised to see Gary Neal go.

What about Pop's choice of words? He didn't say "A trade will get made if it makes sense"... he said "THE trade will get made..."

Is there already a trade possibility just pending execution? Or maybe a trade in the negotiation stages?

Blair is like Malik Rose 2.0

Blair's offensive game has consistently improved and so have his Whataburger habits --

My concern comes in around playoff time when rebounding and defense becomes an essential part of winning games. However, when he is on the floor with Timmy his PER goes up and they work very well in the paint; TD does a nice job compensating for Blair. The reason why we don't see a lot of Splitter/Duncan combinations is because then Blair would be forced to play with Bonner at some point... and we definitely don't want that.

IMO, we should keep Blair around if the price is right

I think its been obvious that we've been showcasing him. JA is missing something though (confidence is my guess) and if he doesn't start taking advantage of the minutes he gets he may be circulating the dleague pretty soon

@IMISSMALIK@dcarlock2 years away??? terrible.

I've seen him play quite a bit and I would say he would develop a LOT faster in Austin than he would in the UK playing 19 and 20 yr olds.

or they have nothing

I think we all agree we need a legitimate post defender other than TImmy and Tiago to be contenders - this has been stated by this website, fans and media talkin heads alike. I'm not saying Haddadi is the one we've been waiting for, but he's definitely worth a look. I don't see why that is so foolish.

Then again... I'm just an over-opinionated fan

A chance to win.... a championship?

That is possible IF and ONLY IF we have a legitimate post defender in rotation that isn't Timmy or Tiago. You know this as you've stated it on Podcasts and Blogs alike. I love Blair.. tenacious rebounding, can score in the post, and lead the league in steals for Centers last year. But he will never be a premier post shot blocker/defender (something we will be screaming for come playoff time).

If Zeller works out and has a great year.. then fantastic - we got lucky. But don't count on it. Hassell is.. well.. an inch shorter than Bonner and 20 lbs heavier.

If Haddadi goes un-looked then I would be extremely disappointed in our FO. He is 7'2, 265lbs and only 26 yrs old and has NBA/Euroleague experience.

Bryan - stop regurgitating nonsense you hear pundits saying on ESPN

TD did NOT look old all last year, STATS DONT LIE - he averaged 13.5 pts, 9.5 boards, 2 blocks, and 2.7 assists with 50% FGpercentage - and thats with averaging FOUR LESS MINUTES than the previous season where he averaged less blocks and did about the same in boards and assists.

So his decline pretty much came in points alone (which is understandable considering the run n gun offense that Pop opted for last yr)

So considering he touched the ball about 40% less.. I'd say his numbers were pretty damn good.

TD is still top 3 in the league in defending the post and still top 3 in the league in SCORING in the post.

Well... The FO never sleeps. Like Pop said a few days ago.. "We aren't just going to get a body to put in there"

With that said, a really good argument could be made for Haddadi not being "just another body." If we would giver Zeller a shot.. I don't see why it's so far fetched to give Haddadi a chance.

A legitimate 7 footer just hopped in the free agency pool - Hamed Haddadi.

It seems like we should have a fighting shot should we attempt to sign him. He is unrestricted so no need to wait n see if Memphis will match offer
