I use to use a pair of needlenose pliers that were fine enough to fit in the recess and around the screw, and hold very tight and twist.

I actually managed to take my N64 apart using the pen trick, so it does work. I think it might be better to leave it on the screw and let it cool on top of it to keep the fit.

I just have a 30 or something piece console bit set that works perfect.
