I've gotta agree with you Joe. The O's clearly need to improve their rotation if they have any hope of staying at or near the top of the AL East. The problem with this is that their farm system is already so thin and they don't want to mortgage the future for this year. Baltimore could pickup Oswalt for only money, not having to part with prospects to do so.
Still not convinced Oswalt wants to come to Baltimore, but I can definitely see why the Birds would be interested in him.
@Double Down It would be neat to see that gun in operation again. Sounds like he has a real shot at being a regular in the Blue Jays lineup this season.
@AndrewDenny Thanks Andrew! Agree that no one is safe on a team such as the Cubs, especially if they are blown away. You never know what happens, but it sounds like Theo wouldn't mind keeping Garza around for the long haul.
@MCBjohnverburg Agreed, and I don't think it's worth moving someone like Machado to attempt to contend this season with the way their club is currently constructed.
@Double Down Haven't heard about him working out at first base yet, but it could make sense. It does look like the Dbacks believe Vlad could be a part-time option for the outfield, though.
That lineup is looking pretty solid, especially if Morales can stay healthy and Trumbo can handle the hot corner. We already know what their pitching can do, so the race for the AL West crown should be fun to watch this season.
@The5_5Hole So you don't think a trade will be necessary? I wasn't sure if Hundley's limited playing time had to do with injuries or ineffectiveness before last season.
@AgainstKyle I'd give him $100 to play catch with me for a season.
@BrianWinter It will be interesting to see if the Cubs are willing to deal Garza for a package centered around a top young arm such as Turner. It was never clear if Detroit ever really put him on the table this offseason.
@baseballhitting Couldn't help it. Hopefully you never have to see it again (until Derek Lowe retires).
“how much weight that fat kid has lost since filming,” turning around to add, “I mean, seriously, have you seen him lately? Unbelievable.”
It's comments such as these that almost have me missing Joe.
It's amazing to read over that list of injuries. So unfortunate for a guy that's still only 27. Because of his age and the prospect of another incentive laden deal, I've got to believe that Zumaya will give baseball another go. Whatever his decision, I agree with you, he needs to be content with it.
@mickey_baseball Yeah family definitely seems to be a priority, not greed. I can't blame the guy but I also can't blame potential suitors for taking Oswalt's decision into consideration.
Great piece Doug. Zimmerman has always seemed like a first-class guy. Hopefully he can remain healthy over the life of the deal, he's a lot of fun to watch when he's on the field.
This is one of my favorite things.
I'll say the Red Sox have a better shot at making the playoffs this season, but it's a tough choice. Realistically I could see both clubs missing the postseason. The NL East has gotten competitive in a hurry and the AL Beast is always a slug fest.
It's certainly hard to argue the logic of incentive-laden contracts. It will be interesting to see what type of production the Yankees are able to get out of these guys.
Another low-cost potentially high-reward move for the Yankees, can't really argue with it.
The5_5Hole Sounds like that should get wrapped up soon as well.
