Whack whack, and whack. An exercise in tree loping. Matthysse Garcia tickles my fancy.
M can be hit and often when he is closer than his happy medium range. When at his comfortable medium range he goes left right up and down hook straight with impressive powerful variety. When moving between close and medium range he can look flat footed. So for me the key is the range this fight is fought at and who wins the distance battle. Other key considerations: P's chin and flanks, can they handle the punishment they are abt to receive; M's activity level, the lack of which cost him his two losses. On a subjective level, I want to see natural justice delivered to a drug cheat who in my stern opinion should not fight again based on my preferred one strike rule.
Wrong. Mac the knife would demolish Fairy Federer. What the hell do you know abt tennis ;)
Magnificent article. He still is the most watchable HW around, it seems. In or out of the ring. Vicarious joy at hearing of him doing well and getting himself together. Was he not in the first 3 years the fastest and most technically destructive HW that has been?
@ALEXMAC not racist, but the geezus may offend the bibliophiles.
Rios crashing the party? Agree, that's what he does. That's just him. Didn't hear anything disrespectful and it was terrific telly. Do we want everyone to become soft and cuddly like big George?
Two great fights the last month. Boxing is back, if indeed it ever went away.
@tstarks I'm simply typing challenged ;)
Broner seems to think 'hiself' a cunning linguist, misguidedly. Perhaps in chin resting the perineum he has found his core skill... His
I'm salivating...slurp slurp...growl. I want it just like the first fight, but longer. I wanna see more body shots on Rios. I wanna not notice the referee.
@tstarks fair enough on froch. He has faced and done well against those fellows. He has lost to two of them though at the end of the day, and in my subjective criteria that matters.
I'd have both ward and Marquez ahead of may, with a sliver between them all. Marquez especially , what else does he have to do? A respectful question tim: has marqs ped possibility, unproven, entered your assessment? I'd also have Bradley a bit higher due to his last 2 wins, irrespective of the manner of victory. I think froch is too high. I must say though its much easier critiquing someone else's list than actually coming up with my own.
Thanks for that. Research material for me this weekend, into some of those back peddlers and graspers I am not familiar with. May I pose the question: who is the most famous nullifier of all time? May I offer you specimen1, the great jack Johnson, bang bang bang, hold, smile and trash talk opposing corner, two steps back, bang bang, hold, continue discussion, ad nauseum. He could do it and did do it all day long and all decade long.
A decelerating crisis indeed. The falling body has hit the ground and only moves now due to the injection of digital numbers, aka debt. I fear the only solution is a start from scratch, banishing the "interested" parties. It will neither happen with global economics nor with legal pugilism. Sigh.
Hats off to bhop for his achievement. Think abt it: 48 years old, ex con, the shape he is in, taking on younger guys, winning. He is something else. And he has deprived himself of pizza for 20 years! What a fighter. But, his fights bore the hell out of me and his opinions on things are just plain embarrassing and antiquated. Please retire Mr Hopkins.
I admire Hopkins achievements his whole career and esp now at an advanced age schooling nearly everyone he meets. But. He doesn't do it to me and I don't enjoy much his fighting style, and even less his out of ring bs. I wouldn't pay much to see him, sadly.
Nice article Alex and pretty good footwork too!
I know this isn't an ask-aunt-fanny advice column, but Im in a dilemma whether to fork out the travel costs plus the cheapest 600 buck plus seat ticket to see the next may weather instalment. Will this fight be worth all the expense , that's what I'd like to know. I'm suspended between yes, do it, last chance to see may weather in relatively good form, and no, it'll be another wash out round by round. Advice greatly appreciated.
I'm going to be a bit contrarian on Marquez and PEDs. I've seen plenty of guys change their body shape naturally over an intensive 6 month or longer training period. Hell, ive done it myself in my younger years and im just a bum. And in marquez's case given he has been overtly and obsessively in single minded pursuit of a decisive win over pacman, its equally likely he just beefed up to increase his power. He already had all the boxing tools one could want. What that fight showed me is that PAC is in decline and Marquez is not, yet. It also showed clearly the Marquez ring IQ. What can be explained reasonably shouldn't need to be explained less reasonably in my humble opinion. Yes, I am getting cranky.
Granted none of these fights have me salivating but maybe just maybe one of them will exceed expectations. My pick would be price thompson. It could at best be a comparative fight to Thompson klitscho in that if price deals with him inside 2 or 3 he marks himself up Emphatically closer to a world title shot against one of the doctors. If it goes to later rounds then price will have to move horizontally to take on the fly swatting fury in a local grudge derby. Either way it will show us something. I'm hoping price comes out firing with his big right and sets up a late this year k fight to pump some interest into the heavy division.
