By the numbers, the odd man out should be Harper.
When Lannan loses, its a matter of degrees. Detwiler blows up quickly and in spectacular fashion. With good bullpen management, Lannan is the better choice
Not sure I agre with #4. JZimm still makes mental mistakes.
My prediction - Ian Desmond will not be the starting Shortstop by the All Star Break.
I don't understand how or why a professional athlete in his late 20's like Morse could end up with a lat strain. Did he come to camp that way? Didn't he stay in shape all winter? this is his JOB.
The shelf life of a reliever, almost any reliever other than Mariano Rivero is much shorter than that of a decent hitter. If this deal is offered, the Nats should do it in a heartbeat. Mattheus or Stammen could step right into this role.
Say what you will about Gorzo, but he's a lefty and that makes him valuable. He's a better reliever than Detwiler. AND, most imporantly, his "walk on music" is "When The Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin. That alone gives him extra points.
My theory has always been that the Nats hope LaRoche plays well enough that they can trade him for a prospect right about the time Harper is ready to come up. The trouble with this is that LaRoche is a notororiously slow starter.
Why isn't Ankiel likely to resign with the Nats? A Camerron/Ankiel platoon would not be awful.
"only his motivation, work ethic and mental aspect"... see Milledge, Lastings and Morgan, Nyjer. and perhaps Dukes, Elijah.
Rizzo's determination to get a front line starter was admirable, but the problem last year was not so much pitching, but the lack of run support. There were lots of 1-0, 2-1, and 2-0 losses last year and several other games where the hitters let the pitchers down. Strasburg lost games last year too.
Unless and until they get a more potent lineup this team is not going anywhere.
Can he take Clippard with him?
