"Don’t sacrifice what made you great by attaching it to the mundane. Be great the way you aspired to be great." - Love this!

I remember Geocities. My goodness were the websites and blogs ugly! I remember my first page -- I had written all the code (something I wouldn't be able to do anymore!). I had a dancing mouse on it. It was in 2003. Thank God for WordPress!

Great post, as always, Danny!

@Jonathan Trenn I absolutely agree with your statement. It's disjointed and without forethought at all.

Technically, there are tons of resources out there. A lot of brands just don't want to make any effort.

Great article, Ray!

I really like how well-rounded List.ly is becoming. Nick, you have done a fantastic job promoting the platform!

I still think that Klout is totally irrelevant in its current iteration. With that said, I know the company is trying to improve the metrics.

If you really think about it, it's really hard to measure influence, especially with "invisible" content.

Ultimately, if you can't move your audience, your discounts will do nothing to keep you in business. It's about the stories you tell and how willing you are to involve your audience in the process.

@newraycom Yes, this reminds me of someone who recently was in one of my social media classes and mentioned that they didn't want to get into social media because it seemed to be a lot of work.

When I asked them how they made their business work, they replied: "Well, that's easy. I work hard."

Need I say more? lol

An excellent article, @newraycom! I particularly like this paragraph:

"The rush to Facebook by small businesses has been fueled by a gold rush mentality. Companies that have little understanding of social media, trip over themselves to keep up with their competitors.

Without a strategy, they’re all panning for fools gold."

Strategy is what most brands miss when they start doing social media!

@margieclayman Before you can offer a special discount or a white paper, you need to know who your audience is.

Most companies start doing social media without a plan. They just hope that their self-promo messages will get the hears and eyes of prospects without doing the proper research. That's what I'm talking about.

That's why I mentioned that we should stop talking about ROI and focus a little more on what will help us stay in business: people. Without them, we are nothing.

I personally prefer the term ROR (return on relationships).

@lindyasimus Yes, I agree. You focus on people before the dollar sign, which makes a difference. You build trust before expecting monetary results.

@lindyasimus What would you do in "real life" to ensure you can succeed? It works in the same way.

Social media is about people, so you should definitely focus on people first. When you do that, you increase your chances of them trusting you.

Hello @DannyBrown,

Great article. This reminds of the stat regarding self-proclaimed social media experts on Twitter (over 180,000).

I don't understand what people don't get about social media. They talk about ROI before talking about people. They talk about results before focusing on strategy. It's like they completely forget the basics as soon as they are hidden behind their computer screens.

As you said, social media doesn't have to be that way.

Maybe we should stop talking about ROI and remember that social media is about people. Period.

You cannot sell without a strategy. And you have no strategy if you just think about making money.

What strikes me is how similar everything is.

We have not evolved that much over the years. We are actually returning to the basics!
