Too bad it's not an e-book with the principles...but perhaps you could do an e-book of the summary of some of the points after your time teaching at that location is finished.

I weed out words by having someone proof my comic strips. Most of the time, the panels are fine, but every once in awhile the weeds take over the grass and the panel is too wordy. It can be improved greatly by changing the words or phrase entirely which removes the filler and also enhances the point of the strip better.

I'm sure that it has, but we (now) tend to pick and choose the projects that come our way because we see that our time has value;  and some projects aren't worth your time or your value.

You might want to update your post to have your post link in it, http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/1873, or something like the title of the panel that we are supposed to vote for. Just a suggestion.

I do the same thing as you with my comics that get posted every Friday, I have them scheduled to go out, but will illustrate them in advance. Currently, I am illustrating comics that won't go live until mid-November, but have story lines drafted that won't hit online until a good month or two into 2013.

Now sometimes the inspiration hits and I have the time to do an additional comic earlier in the week based on recent events, like how I was able to produce a comic making light of some earthquakes that happened in So. Cal. earlier this week and had a comic ready to publish by the next morning, making it an extra post and extremely relevant.

@Erin F. Industry-wide? I can't tell you, but for my business? Yes, people have stopped asking about getting better rankings and have started asking (again) on getting a better site. Hopefully people will start to realize that if you provide great writing and a nice site (that caters your audience), you should have no trouble getting viewers as long as you let people know about the site.

I agree completely with worrying about the quality of the writing more than if the search engines will pick up your content. If you are writing for results alone, on a website, then you are missing the purpose: writing with your audience in mind. The goal of website copy is to make it clear, easy and give the audience all the necessary information. SEO helps, but if you have good writing that isn't spamming and the tags, headlines and body copy are consistent, the search engines will find them just fine.

@ElenaBowman  Turns out that Pinterest has been updating it's Terms of Service in response to many users complaints. I have a follow-up post here, http://dustbunnymafia.com/wordpress/consider-this/pinterest-updates-its-terms/, but I am still deciding whether to bring the dust bunnies back to Pinterest.

@Erin F. Those are the four biggest reasons that I see in the industry for people doing redesigns, and consequently those are the things I try to push most when I am taking on new design work.

@JayBaer If it's not a price that some companies are willing to pay, maybe they don't need to be on Facebook, perhaps other platforms are more suited to their commitment level and are in their metaphorical price range.

As a small business owner, I understand what you are saying with this article, but disagree in some aspects.

#1: For the cover image issue, I am sure that with the 2,810 Likes you have on your Facebook page, one of them might be willing to aid you in creating a cover image for you; perhaps a barter where you’ll promote the person, mention that the new cover image was created by [insert company name here] and then tag to their page. This concept can work for small businesses too, you may just have to put in some more work into finding someone and reaching out to them with this proposition. *Side-note: If you are interested in this, I may be able to help. (www.facebook.com/DustBunnyMafia)

#4: For pinning and starring, it’s a matter of learning how to interact with your customers. How do you figure out how to get likes and comments on your page? You do it by trial and error, same thing works with this way.

Finally, generally speaking over several points, most of the new technologies are just that, new technologies that will take time to learn and master. If you don’t have the time and resources right now to master them, then don’t. No one is pressuring you to jump into Facebook brand pages, maybe it’s more important to focus on building your business and less time on Facebook unless it’s going to be profitable, then you just have to learn to manage your time more effectively and set aside some time to learn how to do these things.

There are so many times where I see numbers 6&7 abused. I can understand #7 being used if you are going to a musician’s website, that is acceptable, but the photographers that want to show that they are classy by adding music to their page, yeah that needs to stop. I recently did a website for a client who insisted on using clip-art. They revamped their site and made it clear on what they did and who they were, it was a great reflection of their brick and mortar business, then they had to ruin their image a bit by using clip-art graphics.

My goal is to focus on maintaining the consistency of the Dust Bunnies, continue establishing their personalities and interactions rather than introducing a ton of new characters without any depth.

"Writers write so that readers can read." - Sean Connery in Finding Forrester.

I typed that quote before reading the rest of the post. Regardless of if it is ever picked up by a publishing company or whether you release it via self-publishing (ebook, pdf, hard-copy), in the end, is it really about the publisher liking it or you getting your words out there for the readers that need/want to read them?

If it's a part of your passion, you can't let rejection letters get you down.

There are several times when I get frustrated, look at my illustrator file mid-project and think, why do people like these guys (my dust bunnies)? They're not hard to draw, a lot of little random lines, cartoon eyes, bunny ears and feet. It's not like these guys are artistic wonders or anything. But then I usually stop, take a look at the dust bunnies themselves and keep going on with the illustration. Because in the end, it's not about the doubt in my head, it's about getting the characters out there for people to see and connect with. When in doubt, take a look at your dust bunny (substitute artistic medium here as necessary) and then keep going.

Not to take any business away from your current go-to people, referencing, "I simply need to speak with my computer programmer to see how feasible or costly those ideas would be," I do have experience in web programming/development, in case you feel the need to branch out. Just thought I'd throw that out there, my Dust Bunnies don't really showcase the coding aspect of my work, but my other site http://www.julianowebpages.com can help that.

I remember my parents saying this too, "My mom has a saying, “Your lack of planning does not necessitate a crisis on my part.” " They really wanted me to use that line on some clients who waited all summer to have (while under contract) to do nothing and then 6 weeks before the event go, we need everything done yesterday...."

I have several different genres that I switch from based on activities. If I am studying or reading a book in which I have to concentrate, I'll turn to classical music because it's detailed enough that it keeps me awake, but not too distracting because there aren't words (most of the time) that would otherwise conflict with the words on the page.

If I am in a creative mood however, I am much more open to what I listen to. Rap music tends to help when I am illustrating or doing web design. If I am programming, variations on Techno music are a great listen for me. Then if I am writing poetry, I'll actually listen to music that has similar feelings, or if a song was inspiration for that particular piece, I will listen to that song on repeat.

For me, I insert Dust Bunnies, but that only works for me and vacuum cleaner sales-people. I inject creativity by adding a bit of humor to my posts. For instance if the topic is talking about "Getting your feet wet in website traffic analysis," I can talk about how the dust bunnies were out running around with squirt guns and shooting me in the head with water, that random tangent might offer a bit of lightheartedness to an otherwise dull subject...as long as the tangent is not too far of a logical jump from the topic.
