I am really not worried at all about Luck. (I am very worried that the Colts could actually be a better team, but not have near the record they did last season.)
In regards to sophmore slumps, I think they are much more likely for QBs that made big splashes their rookie seasons due to unique circumstances. (I don't want to say "novelity".) I think it will be more interesting to see how the league adapts to RGIII and Wilson, and then how they adapt to how the league tries to defend the read option.
Since Palmer idn't play his rookie year, I figured you were just using his second season, but the first he actually played, as his freshamn season.
@Coltsheadben No, no, I couldn't stand the shame. (Brad Wells not getting my sense of humor would destroy me.)
I also feel that in the 2013 Colts' new offense of pistol and read/option formations, that when Luck is not optioning defensive ends or barrelling forward to take on linebackers, that Hilton will be an excellent choice for reverses and last minute pitches.
Just kidding...
Although anyone who takes the time to read my comments may disagree, to keep my sanity, I stopped reading the "esteemed" Mr. Wells last year. (And by golly, most of the voices in my head have gone away.)
Still, I do find it amusing that people are concerned about putting Luck in harm's way. I mean what could be more dangerous than Arians' vastly "diversified" playcalling of "everybody go long" behind the Colts offensive line last year?
I agree about Holmes. I happened to be watching the USC/Stanford game last season (at a time when USC was still suppose to be really good) and when Holmes went out of the game with an injury, the Trojans suddenly couldn't block anyone anymore.
He kind of reminded me of a college version of Jeff Saturday. Not neccessarily real physically imposing but by making all the right reads and line calls he made the whole unit work effectively. Without him, they fell apart.
What... was there no film of him displaying his cat-like moves by jumping over the line of scrimmage and landing on his feet?
5-10% chance at best... on most teams. On the Colts, I would put the odds below that of Lindsey Lohan straightening out her life.
I mean the Colts having a dynamic teturner...
I think it is perfectly reasonable to examine Grigson's motives here.
What Colts fan can forget the immortal Gilbert Gardner? Gardner continued to play long after it was more than apparent to anyone watching that he was not doing the job. But this turned out to be a case that even the great Tony Dungy continued to ride a bad horse when no one could understand why.
Coaches and GMs are human. Even the best ones make mistakes and misjudge players. All the time players either because of money or draft position or just reputation, get favorable treatment over "better" players.
My guess is that Shipley had much more appeal to the Ravens than Sartele. It was Shipley or nothing and the Colts took the draft pick and ran with it. But to ignore the potential of Grigson having a human bias... is blindly foolhardy.
IMO Kyle did a great job of raising a resonable concern, without being Skip Bayless-like raving mad.
Amen Bro.
I hate shaving too... but like listening to Dan Dumb-Dorf call a Colts TV game, sometimes you have to man up and just do it.
"...his trademark neck beard". Ha!
I had a theory that while Luck was still at Stanford, he had a friendly bet with his offensive lineman that he could sport the worst look possible (i.e. neck beard) and still get any girl he wanted.
Now... unless he is just a big fan of... (thinking, thinking, thinking) maybe Abraham Lincoln on his worse days, I just don't get it. Of corse, if he starts attending his post game press conferences sporting a Stovepipe Hat, mystery solved.
A photo of how I personally speak to my cap, would involved me yelling at it as I threw it on the ground when Garcon dropped the pass or Baskett misplayed the onside kick during the Super Bowl. Alas, there are no photos available.
(Probably for the best, as it is an old Reebok cap.)
I think you hit the nail on the head about viewing the signing from another prism...
Great stuff Ben.
This makes sense, as I do not believe in the past that safety was considered a "premium" position. As the game has evolved, I wonder if the value placed on safety play will increase and they will start being drafted accordingly.
Anyway, here is hoping that the Colts get as lucky with Boyett as they did with Bethea.
I have always been a big time anti PED guy. But I admit that regarding HGH, I am falling into the trap of everybody is using them and it helps players recover so much faster.
Plus, it seems to me that the NFL and the NFLPA knows this and doesn't want to stop it.
Timely article Kyle.
(Especially since I've stupidly allowed myself to fall into the trap of thinking that the Colts have not had a very good off-season to date.)
Um, Nate buddy, have you seen the way that Hughes mandhandled the Tennessee Tech offensive line?
And as Marcus cited earlier this week, he "moves like a cat."
I just have the utmost faith that Werner will have such a dedication to his craft, that he will find some success. Barring injury, I think his floor is being a consistent cocntributor for the next 5 to 10 years. Could the Colts have gotten a better player... only time will tell. But could the Cotls have landed the next JJ Watt? i think it is at least in play.
HGH...
You get bigger, it helps you recover faster and there is no test for it. Of course, there are plenty of players on EVERY team doing it. (And probably the reason both the league and the players are dragging their feet about blood testing.)
I posted earlier here. And I know there have been several responses as I see them in my email. Yet, as I am posting this, it is showing no comments. And the posts that showed up in my email, are not here so that I can respond to them.
Is this just my computer? Is anyone else having this problem? This has been the case for me for the last few weeks.
