Great write up as usual Sutra! But damn you for that Donna Summers picture, now I will have that song in my head all day! I really hope that we can transfer the play from last week into this week and if we do I agree that we should get this one. Now my biggest problem will be to find a place to watch the game as I will be Nawleans. If we can beat Utah it will be doubly sweet as I have a meeting Saturday night with a bunch of Ute alums.

@Longball @ptowncoug3012 Spurrier called Breske?
1 month ago on Conversation @ http://wsufootballblog.com/2014-articles/win-out.html
@Longball Thank you for bringing this up. I have read over every BSPN article about the game and heard on every Sirius college football show for two days now. Which ever idiot controls their shared brain cell sure has put out word that this why they almost lost.
I will venture that we found our selves last night. Even more Breske realized base defense isn't going to cut it. Connor for the third straight game found a third straight receiver for the third straight game to turn into a star. And the previously absent Daryl Monroe( even though he led the team in tackles coming into this game) was a force in the back field. I have every confidence that this was actually one of those losses that will turn the corner. Bring on the Utes! And GO COUGS!

The one key that was was the difference was the officiating. That's all for now
I think Allison being on the field is a great change. He was flying around in the PSU game. I have read a couple of articles where the players are talking about how Monroe is setting the defensive alignments and is the QB on D. I have to wonder if this is making him think too much out there. We talk about how Monroe is absent but has 21 tackles, which is among the most on the team. The problem with Monroe this year is that with those 21 tackles he has ZERO tackles for loss in that average. He is making the stop after the line of scrimmage. Now this speaks more to ultra conservative base defense and the bend, bend and then break style that we have been playing too. I would love for Breske to give the freedom to his defense that Leach gives to the QB and see if the boys dial up the fire zone blitz a time or two. Other than that I am looking forward to the game. And if you need more reason to get amped up about sticking it to the Ducks follow the linky.
I hope you are right. I have a feeling that we will see much more attention paid to the backs this game. It may not be straight run plays but I would love to see a few bubble screens to back with Mayle lead blocking and a pulling guard or two.

Great write up Sutra I have been forcing myself this year to a few days before diving into the blog-o-sphere after a lovely game like the first two. One thing I noticed during the "Leaving Reno" game was that I was seriously concerned about CH after that helmet to helmet spearing in the first drive. He jumped up after that and was yelling at the sideline like he didn't know where he was. After that was pick #1. From there we lost the guy that ran out onto the field and tried to rally the D in the Rutgers game. We had bad Connor, who forces the ball and changes every play to a pass because, dammit, I played with a lacerated liver. CML is completely right in that there is a culture of pat on the back because we came close too. If anyone doesn't think that he has learned from his time at WSU on how to handle these situations remember his "Zombie" comments or this bit of beautifully incorrect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6brYtuPX-Q

@oldsavage You beat me to the Hooty prediction. The line from Vegas is now 3 1/2 so there is money to be made here, if that's your thing. I don't want to jinx anything so no betting for me. From reports I have seen their defense isn't so great so Connor can have another Air Raid day, and they have a newcomer at left tackle so hopefully our Dline will get some disruption in the backfield. From reading WAY into Leach's comments this week about the defense being one dimension it would be a good guess that we are going to bring the kitchen sink on blitzes and have more than just the base defense with little substitution. I have to hope that traffic in the TriCities isn't suddenly bad because I have fifteen minutes to get little miesters first scrimmage to the TV tonight. Here is to a great Friday Night of football.
Great write up Hawk! That is great to hear about Connor and his mental maturation. I know that Nueheisel has been ranting and gushing over CH all summer over on Sirius radio. I expect that we will see a very determined Dline next week. Breske's tendency to stay in base D aside I have a feeling that Big Joe is going to have the boys breathing fire this week. What I wonder is who is going to step up on the defense and become the leader? Monroe just doesn't seem to do it. I would hope that Cooper or Pole would step up but I don't see it yet. Anywho, Go Cougs!
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://wsufootballblog.com/2014-articles/espn-gameday-flags-everyones-doing-it.html
Hooty alert! Cougs go undeafeted and have two game day visits. Halliday should be much more settled in the offense and won't press so much. I agree that our linebacking corps will decide how our defense goes but with Cooper up front and the bulk/speed from Destiny and Pole anchoring I am very excited to see some pressure up the middle. This should lead to Breske being able to unleash the blitzes that push our defense into a really good catagory.

Sutra, thank you for perfectly putting this into perspective. I have read so many should of, could of, would of's on the old interweb that I actually turned off my computer until until after the Sehawks taking a page from our playbook. I think next year we are going to have to hope that our offense looks like those from TT as well to get enough points to outscore the other team.

@Sutra I was talking today with a distrught Husky friend and he was lamenting how tough it is to conduct a coaching search with all the instant social media. He said twitter was going crazy about a Peterson sighting. I also saw twitter reports of Petrino being sighted at Seatac. All of this makes me even more awed at how Moos kept a 007 level of secrecy on the Leach hiring. After reading the chapters in The System about what went on I am happy happy happy about how tight of a ship Moos and Flyod run.
Here is the real reason Sark lefthttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee211/Pumpman05/Leachdaddy_zpsf5a3f7be.jpg

LB, Rockin the shaved head! I agree that Broadway Bill said it so it must be, right? Hawk, what I think I really have seen come to this team is CML's philosophy of next game, next series, next snap. This is what I hope CH has learned and will remember and the defense will adopt wholeheartedly. Focus on the individual task and what you have to do in the moment and we will win. The other thing that is encouraging is how last week the coaching staff has proven that they too have to learn. Leach had commented how he should have called some time outs during the Arizona game to break their momentum on offense and what did we see last week? Timely time outs! tomorrow we will see if the lessons I have seen the last two weeks can remember their lessons and not come out over hyped. If so I will be drinking celebratory Fireball shots not consoling shots!

Of course we're still hear. I loved the game plan yesterday. Now can we please have all the "We can't run, Leach won't run" talk go away. Imagine how much more we could do if Connor had a little more speed in his scrambles.

I look forward to the Quacks coming to Pullman next year and hopefully without Mariota, who can bolt to the NFL. The hope I have for ASU is that we can treat it as a mini-bowl game with two weeks to prepare. Of course ASU has the same advantage but I really hope they are overlooking us.

Leach won't switch to Apodaca. The two times as a HC he played rotating quarterbacks have not worked out. One year at TT he did this and almost had a losing season. Last year with the yo yo between CH and Tuel never allowed the team to get in a rhythm. I think also that the next QB to take the field after CH will be Bruggman not Apodaca. But we don't really know as Coach will make that decision and not let us influence his choice. On a positive note I was completely expecting a "Fat Little Girlfriends" presser from Leach. He did express frustration but there was no empty corpse comments. This leads me to believe that the team is continuing to adopt the Leach mindset and I hope that last Saturday was yet another learning moment
Funny how we have all started taking the Pirates attitude. This hit when you wrote about "explosives" and I didn't blink. This is a lexicon from Leach, I would have called them big plays before the Captain. One thing that people who point to the Beavers Oline getting their starters back forget is that it takes time to gel as a unit. This is one more big step for Connor too. If he can come out and not push too hard then Katy bar the door. I am just sooo glad we put the hurt on the Bears as now I have a whole year to lord that over my sister, an alum from Bezrkley! Go Cougs!

Bad Sutra on let down next week. Leach will not say it but he wants to beat Dykes BADLY. Dykes has taken several shots at Leach and you know the Pirate wants cut the "Bear Raid" down with his Cutlas. I have been encouraged by the comments this week not by the players but the way the assistant coaches are talking up how ready we are. Breske, Wilson and Big Joe have all hit the interweb with very positive reports while paying very serious respect for the Trees. I think that they have the club ready for what lays ahead. Even Coah Simmons has been talking more and I now know that he Gabe Marks are kindered souls. Our Cougs expect to win but are ready to do what it takes to get there. Now they just need to put the proof in my pudding. See I went a whole reply without bringing up gunslinger or INT. Dang it, so much for that.
@Jenkins Maybe that's why Leach offered Mayfield. Also he didn't look so hot against TCU and threw two picks. He rode the pine at the end when the winning touchdown was thrown. Kingsbury doesn't run the same offense as us, he is closer to the Oregon offense than the air raid. They look to establish the run first and then play action off of that. Same for Dykes. They both have gone more along the lines of Holgerson.

Nice GIF work! I can't believe the numbers that Halliday has put up. He metioned that the rough start was due to his focusing on that first play from scrimmage. Let's just hope that he gets last play amnesia from here on out because when he is on it is a thing of beauty.
1 year, 1 month ago on Post-Run thoughts on a Sunday, Week 4 of 2013
Numbers nerds! What about moxie or that elusive Hooty number, being a Coug QB? I really feel that Manion should be -12 on the list. He might have put up gaudy numbers against Forget College School (FCS) that beat you but still couldn't get the job done. I for one feel that the Mutts win over the donks was waayyyy overrated. This sin't a good team. Price can look great at home againt an overrated team but lets wait and see how the mutts do on the road ( loss). Goff should look like a Super star by now. Buuuuttttt, we all know that the Air/bear raid takes some adjustment. Just don't see them doing great or good against a real defense (Cal loss). Utah? Meh. We will see when the game rolls around.

Ahem.. Polynesian Posse! I have screaming the same message about stiffling the bring in the back up chorus over the last three days. I feel that with the next two games the team can focus soo much more on execution, timing and scheme that it will show up starting at the Clink game. The season through the first four games equates to having a week 14 and 15 game in the NFL and then playing your preseason games. The next two weeks are, in my opinion, critical for the possible bowl hopes. Crack down and work on the fundamentals and playing with speed and accuracy and we can play past the regular season. If we get lazy and take the wins for granted and the mental gains we have made could backslide when we hit challenges in conference play.
1 year, 1 month ago on Are you still smiling Cougs?
Funny that you brought up the huge hit CH took on that throw to Cracraft. I remember watching that hit and seeing him get up a little gimpy. First thing I said was watch out he is hurting and will now go lock on to one guy and chuck it. As far as the under thrown passes goes, Connor was running for his life and almost every pass was thrown off his back foot. Like Leach said he settled down in the second half and managed the game pretty good ( read no INT's). with two weeks of less pressure to work out the wrinkles I am ready to see if CH can get more comfortable in his Air Raid role at QB.

Not quite up to Hooty standards but me likey none the less. It all comes down to execution. We run the offense like it was meant to be and stay in our assigned gaps on defense and I think we have this. Let's hope for complete concentration for the whole game and we will be dancin' in the streets

1 year, 1 month ago on Guest Post: The Mike Leach Mindset
First off I will tease you again with the munchies for the game
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, grilled and shredded (I season my chicken with fajita seasoning or even Montreal Steak Seasoning prior to grilling.)1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened1 cup mayonaise1 (8 ounce) package shredded Mexican blend cheese1 (4 ounce) can diced green chili peppers1 jalapeno pepper, finely diced (use more is you like more heat)In a medium bowl, combine shredded chicken, cream cheese, mayonnaise, shredded cheese, green chile peppers and jalapeno pepper.
Transfer the chicken mixture to a medium baking dish. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
Now onto football. I was extremely relieved to finally see the vaunted Air Raid on display for the first three quarters last week. Yes there were INT's during that period but we were able to shake off those and the explosives and charge right back into the fray. On defense I think the Dline got gassed by the end of the third quarter and definatley in the fourth. There was no rotation to speak of in this game. Luckily we won't have that humidity down in LA LA land. I also feel that Halliday will have had enough of his film replays and Leach in his ear to make the corrections needed. I feel an upset comin! @Longball I will crack open the bottle of Jeagermiester I smuggled back from Germany and then all bets are off. I might end up putting my Coug flag on the riding mower and doing a naked George Jones ride through downtown El Pasco
BTW, Huddy that outfit rocks. I just got from a trip to Borken Germany and saw a bunch of the young bachelors parading around in laderhosen for the Shutzenfest.
First my game day munchies recipe.
12 jalapenos, tops cut off, seeded and viened
Cream cheese with garlic and bacon bits stuffed into the jalapenos
Wrap the jalapenos in bacon and smoke for 2 1/2 hours
Plenty of cold beer to cool down the heat
I am going to be the first to Hooty this. WSU 80 Auburn Ligers 3. That being done I think it will be a very close game that I don't feel comfortable picking ( don't want to jinx us) but I am very excited to watch our defensive front seven ( Destiny at 290 playing Buck!) and how good they can stop Gussy boy from implementing his run happy offense. This to me is the key that either keep us in it and hopefully charge up the offense or put us in such a hole that Oline has no chance because of the pin your ears back approach that the Auburn defense can take.
I am looking forward to seeing good effort out our guys. Each play is a chance to improve ourselves. Good leadership out of Halliday. Watching the players we don't hear about doing just what we want and knowing things are great with them. Oops I hit the Leach speak translation on my keyboard. I am jacked up to see the Oline get nasty and see a backfield of Caldwell/ Wicks establish some threat of a running game/short flat catch and run open up everything else on offense. I am really jacked to watch Polynesian Posse and a 300 lb buck destroy the read option at Auburn. Most of all I am jacked to see if Sutra can resist the temptation to go for a ride on his Harley with the doctoral student.
1 year, 1 month ago on Losing Your Lunch: Deep Thoughts Edition
I think the concerns over who starts the game in this system is something we need to stop doing. With the amount of plays per game and the pace (hopefully) we should have in year two, all 8 receivers will have the chance to contribute. If one gets hot then you ride that. This rotation will also give the 2's enough reps in game to keep them from getting rusty or losing their effort. I just want to see a running game out of our team.
1 year, 2 months ago on Get the H out of Here!!!!!
@Sutra I agree with Marks as an outside receiver. However he seems to fit the scrappy inside receiver mold to a tee. With the tall timber we have on the outside it seems like a logical move.

I see your logic with Mayle but damn how can you ignore a big target like that. Especially when he seems tailor made for the red zone and the corner fade. I am hoping that a guy this big can get us over the red zone woes we had last year.
