"But that’s not all. A loss could put the entire roster in jeopardy. While anyone suggesting trading Malkin or Crosby is probably insane, there are going to be some major changes to the complexion of this team."
Still can't see how a blowout could be done with this team. They have no tradeable assets (unless it's for equally bad players/contracts), not that many prospects at the position they need to re-tool (forwards), barely any picks and the list of UFA is probably one of the shittiest in recent memories. Teams have locked down on their good, young players since the new CBA and every year the UFA get worst and worst. You are left with very few good one that end up in a bidding war or old vets that you want to avoid (we already went down that road).

@gutsgonebad Has Ehrhoff even started skating again following his most recent setback (one day he was skating/practicing then the next day he wasn't on the ice with the team) ? I wouldn't expect him to be playing in this series. Pouliot could be a possibility, they just sent Harrington down to WBS so I assume Pouliot OK, unless they just wanted Harrington down so he could play in the playoffs over there.

@LoranMannIsTheMan Yeah I would pay to go to the alternate universe where the Pens blue line (and Malkin) is healthy. The results are most likely very different, probably 3-0 Penguins. Let's not under estimate what Letang and Ehrhoff would bring to this team: less time in our defensive zone which probably leads to less penalties (which has been our downfall). And with Letang in, hopefully a few more calls our way (although not likely seeing how the refs are calling things).

@brendannn @Komrade Konfidence I could see that happening. But if that's what he wanted, he should have went into a coaching position not an executive job.
The fact that he chose to be an associate GM would point towards him wanting to be in charge of building a team eventually rather than coaching one.
I could have seen him as an assistant coach, learning next to MJ (which is a career coach and apparently very smart, academic, etc). He could have had Tocchet position IMO. But I think maybe he wanted to stay home with his family most of the time after a long career as a player instead of being on the road with the team at all time as a assistant coach. I assume an assistant GM position allows him to stay it Pittsburgh most of the time.
@_purehockeyfan_ @LP66 @TheBikeman As far as Dman goes, I think Ehrhoff was needed. Clearly, Pouliot, Harrington and Dumoulin were not ready for NHL. Without Ehrhoff, the blue lines looks like :
Letang - Martin
Despres - Maatta
Bortuzzo - Scuderi
Then Maatta gets injured early on, you bring Pouliot when he's not really ready. Bortuzzo and Despres gets traded and you get Lovejoy and Cole. Is that really a defensive lineup you are comfortable with? I know I'd rather much have Ehrhoff in that top4 over Despres/Lovejoy/Cole/Pouliot. It's unfortunate that it didn't work out but it was still a good signing.

@_purehockeyfan_ @LP66 @TheBikeman They might not have lead the team in # of games lost to injury but they were right there neat the top. When you adjust for the quality of players lost to injury (judged by the ice time they usually get), the Pens were top3.
And you are missing the point. The only reason the Pens played shorthanded is because they weren't allowed any kind of relief for that cap space that was injured because there was less than 10 games left in the season. No other teams were in that scenario. The others teams had injuries, yes, but they happened while they could still get relief for them and therefore were able to recall players. No contending team will allow themselves enough extra cap space to recall 3 players in case injuries happen within the last 10 games. It's not gonna happen. It would be like trying to fit 23 players (on a 20 man roster) under the cap. Let's say 3 AHL, very marginal players at around 600k, that would be almost 2M of cap space they have to left untouched just in case injuries happen within the last 10 games? Not gonna happen.
The Kings were offered relief by LTIR for Voynov during his suspension. They had to play a few games short handed while the league sorted that all out. They are using LTIR, which is for injured players, to get cap relief for a SUSPENDED player...it has nothing to do with injuries and it just makes 0 sense. If the Kings weren't allowed such relief, they would have most likely played way more games shorthanded or would have had to trade some of their players just to fit under the cap for the rest of the season.
@304Yinzer I don't know. But if we are to believe what is reported in the media, that all decisions are brought up for discussion between the 10 or so GMs of this team, then there are no reason to believe they wouldn't have made the same calls that is being blamed on JR right now. If trades, cap management and all that other stuff is what sinks JR, then it should sink all the group. They all wanted Lovejoy, they all could have found better scenarios to manage the cap. I can't believe that the group was all like : yeah doing nothing is probably the best course of action.
No other team was strucked with that many injuries in the final 10 games of the season, no. Not nearly as much cap space lost that can't be relieved thru LTIR. Ehrhoff on a 1 year/4M is very reasonable. You have to pay a little bit more if you don't offer term. It's not like GMJR knew Ehrhoff was going to get his head banged 3 times in a month near the end of the season. Also, Ehrhoff never had history of being injured or at least not concussed so there was no indication that could have raised a red flag when signing him.
@Ungaba @Bing_87 Exactly. I think it's not entirely fair to Cole to put the blame on him for that goal. He was suppose to be the 3rd forward in this scenario. Why are the 2 defenders - Scuderi and Martin - on the other side? Shouldn't THEY be covering the front of the net? And if that one play makes you think he is bad, then I've got news for you.... all 6 Pens dmen are bad.

@dmilesend @jovi0055 I hope we get the crew from last night MTL - OTT game. That was a well officiated game.

@BigPen596 Especially with the many very weak calls against the Pens in those 2 games. Admittedly, that trip on Chorney for which we score was a bad call but I guess it was the hockey gods paying back for them scoring on the weak Comeau call in game 1. Also, refs let them walk away with that clearing attempt that should of been a penalty and make it a 5vs3.
@Who Really Cares Will whoever crosschecked Comeau to the back of the head get a call? What about Hagelin with the cheap "woops I ddnt see you there lolz" on Sid. That was textbook interference.
@2PaekShakur Well at least they started to call some on the Rangers. Today, most of the pens penalties were deserved (except maybe that Sutter one...) but I was getting angry in the 2nd when the Rangers still had only 1 call against. No team plays as clean as getting only 2 penalties in 1.5 games in the playoffs. Oh well.

Wooooooooo, great game boys. Wonder what Craig will complain about tomorrow.
Also, Pens are undefeated in game where I drink beers... pls donate, its for a good cause. Don't underestimate the power of beers.
well would you like at that. referees that are not afraid to call interference... and to call penalties no matter what the time is on the clock.

@Who Really Cares @LP66 Yeah. habs sens game. Its fun to watch. This is what hockey should be.. not a snooze fest of dumping the puck and being interfered with.
So that's what a well officiated game looks like? It makes for some exciting hockey, that's for sure.
@Craig Ross All that time analyzing the Pens and watching the game and you still cant get Lapierre's name right? Also, it's probable Crosby read your comment from last time and didn't want to score early in the game cause then you could say he coasted the rest of the way. He was probably saving himself for the 3rd but ran out of time you know.

@Bing_87 No mentions of his guys boring the hell out of everyone watching the game by holding and grabbing everything?
@MatthewRizzo @LP66 Yep, that one I hated. either call both (they were both going at it) or don't call anything (like they did on so many other fights for the puck). It ended up changing the game since that's the PP they scored on.
@MatthewRizzo @LP66 "And a 4-minute penalty could have changed the game."
That's probably why it wasn't called. They were so afraid of just giving a 2 mins to the rangers for their countless hold/interference just in the 3rd period. They were never gonna call a 4 mins on a call that they can get away from by calling it a follow through.
@cwfutureboy @PenGeno @Komrade Konfidence @JDogg You guys be nice to Dats... you know Babcock is bringing him over when he comes coach the Pens next year!!!
@MatthewRizzo It wasnt missed.. Follow through are allowed. Now, one could argue how high is a follow through but I had no problem with it. (Except the fact that were down a man for another 6 mins)
@Bing_87 @LP66 @PenGeno @Komrade Konfidence @JDogg Wow November! so last year... we need a 2015 hat trick. Maybe Bennett or Sutter tomorrow? lolz
@PenGeno @Komrade Konfidence @JDogg I want to see a hat trick. Is it just me? I can't even remember the last Penguin hat trick :(
@pawsbyandmeowkin @_purehockeyfan_ Yeah IDK about Pouliot even playing regularly in the playoffs if everyone is healthy. My assumption was that they were planning (before all the injuries) to go with :Letang - Martin
Ehrhoff - Cole/Lovejoy
Cole/Lovejoy - Scuderi
Pouliot might have seen some time depending on if it was really neede but I don't think he his ready to handle big minutes in the NHL playoffs just yet.
@pawsbyandmeowkin @_purehockeyfan_ @Komrade Konfidence Yeah, there wasnt much youngsters left to mentor anyways once Despres and Bortuzzo were traded and I don't see him mentoring Pouliot.
@pawsbyandmeowkin @LP66 Yeah Martin was at fault for sure. Although I feel like Lovejoy could have been a little bit more to the middle, no need to be right on Nash, he was no threat shooting from the board, just make sure he doesn't cut to the net. Fleury would have handled a shot from there (hopefully). I think it was just a miscommunication because they have barely played together.
@Komrade Konfidence Keeps you on the edge... you never know what to expect!
@pawsbyandmeowkin Let's not pretend that Lovejoy made the play to make that goal happen. It was all Lapierre (and doesnt even get a point) and Comeau. But I agree with you and KK he played better than what he has shown since his trade. Except for that weird play with martin on the 1st goal.. wtf was going on there? so much empty room straight down the middle of the ice!
@Komrade Konfidence @LP66 Yeah the Sun is really bad. Whenever I see some on display here, it takes me all my will power to not take the whole pile and throw it in the garbage (or recycle bin).
@Who Really Cares @PenGeno While I wouldn't be against Geno and Sid having a few shifts together, I can understand why MJ doesn't want it to happen. If you put Sid and Geno together and they manage to shut it down, then who else is left to take care of the most favorable matchups and hopefully convert them into goals? Not a whole lot...Unless Sutter goes backhand all the time lol.
@Komrade Konfidence Well, you are correct... but clearly you have to take into the consideration the context of the quote. He's not just randomly saying this. But by all means, he can hit him with as many clean hits as he can, and I won't care about it. But if he goes for a dirty hit, then they can't say it wasn't premeditated (which was their complaint towards Subban. The GM said that Subban was threatening Stone throughout all the game).
@Komrade Konfidence @dmacpgh Yeah it's stupid but I think it's because so many defenders tend to go down, or just bend a little bit when a shot is taken that a stick if more likely to hit them than if they stayed up. Although I do believe that a it was a loooooong follow through at some point you have to think a player can stop his swing in time.
@dmacpgh Just FYI, Subban did receive a 5major + game... but agreed he should have been suspended. Stone has a micro fracture to the wrist and status is unknown.
@Komrade Konfidence @LP66 @Ungaba @Zhan Yep, totally agree and if by some reason he still can't focus on that part of his game, then you sit him. I just think that he's not capable of keeping the same focus when he's playing top6 than when he is playing bottom 6. But it could be because the coach are asking him to play differently too, who knows.
@Who Really Cares That's awesome! I would watch so much hockey too if games didn't start at 10:30 PM and had to wake up at 6AM.
@PenGeno @LP66 @Who Really Cares You are the hero we need.
@Komrade Konfidence @LP66 @Ungaba @Zhan But thats the problem. Downie gets called for stuff other ppl aren't. There is no way around it, he earned that reputation. Yes he had a few turnovers that created some stuff for his line but was he vital to the game? I dont think so. Wilson could be very much able to create those turnovers without the risk of getting a shitty call or just him losing his shit and getting a major + game misconduct.
They could also try him on Sid or Geno wing, he seems to be more focus on hockey when he's playing there rather than the bottom 6. The guy can contribute offensively, but he has to focus on that aspect of the game only.
@Ungaba @LP66 @Zhan Yep, or Downie. Can't have them take stupid penalties and they are far less of a threat offensively. Perron took a stupid penalty but at least he is a threat with the puck on his stick. The pens need guys that can score, and Perron won't find his scoring touch by being scratched.
@Who Really Cares Yeah I wanted to watch it but it was wayyyyyy to late. I'll probably watch the games in Winnipeg, they are more likely to start earlier.
@Ungaba @Zhan Well, they do have Wilson with the team. If you brought him up, might as well give up a game? But Perron would not be the 1st guy I'd scratch.
Also guys, please dont mention Despres again...makes me sad :( I am sure he's happy where he's at. Lots of people saying he was gonna get scratched for the Ducks come playoffs. Seems like he has found a regular spot over there. Wischievsky (dont bother looking how to spell it) was the scratch. He's probably happy that he will get further in the playoffs than the Pens might.
@Ungaba @PenGeno Yeah going down 2-0 in the series will be hard to even think about coming back into the series. They must win that next game.
@Who Really Cares Bylsma going to Philly.
@Zhan well cause it was called on Chorney in the 1st period. You'd expect some kind of consistency at least in the same game if you can't get it from games to games.
@Farnsworth Yeah I don't think they care. The instructions comes from higher than them too. More than 1 officials admitted that they was some kind of management involve in the game and that it was asked by the league. When the league itself doesn't want to enforce their own rules all the time, consistently regardless of the score or the time on the clock, then you have a bigger problem than the individuals calling the games. I get that they might miss a few calls, or misinterpreted something they saw for a penalty but there is no way they missed all these holding/interference calls on the Rangers all night long...impossible. Why go to 2 ref system if none of them are going to make the calls?
After the very low standards the refs applied in the 1st period I was sure the Pens would have more than enough occasions to practice their PP but alas, something must have happened in the ref room during that 1st intermission. I have no problem if you are going to call Chorney for that interference (not that I think it was, looking at all the others hits in the playoffs) or Comeau for that roughing (lolz?) but if that is your standards, then the Rangers should have gotten way more than 1 penalty.
@Bing_87 @Ungaba He apparently hasnt been playing great since coming back from an injury. Lack has been doing good/great so I assume they are riding the hot goalie.
