You have the right to live as you chose, until it interferes with anyone else living as they chose. If you chose to be an unarmed victim that is your choice. Some of us (estimates range from 80,000,000 to over 100,000,000 legal gun owners) chose not to be. Since the number of crimes committed with a firearm each year may, in a bad year reach the low six figures, that means that the vast majority of gun owners are a threat to no one except the criminals among us. There are approximately 32,000 deaths in which a gun is the tool (and that is all it is, a tool) each year in this country. About 17,000 are suicides which would occur regardless of tool used, and so should not be included. The majority of the rest are thug killing thug, which only serves to improve society. There are some, always tragic, deaths of innocents, this cannot be prevented without fundamentally changing human nature. The other side of the argument is that firearms are used, depending on whose study you believe, anywhere between 103,000 (Brady Center, as anti gun and self defense as you can get) and 2,500,000 (Gary Kleck, et all, started out anti until they saw the facts) time per year. How many lives saved by firearms will it take to change you mind about this? To steal a phrase from the gun banners "if it saves just one life then it's worth it".

@Frank Clarke "Atlas Shrugged" was also supposed to be fiction, but some seem to be using it as an instruction manual. Funny how things like that happen.
