Great post! Too many companies ( and less savvy marketing/pr consultants ) don't look closely enough ad2 the real ROI. They get hyped up over the numbers and a PR opportunity. At least this campaign was kinda targeted, many campaigns just throw a wide net, getting loads of likes that are only intetested in the freebie and not the core product/service.
Also this was a one-off, hopefully they invest as much in converting these fans to customers and brand ambassadors, and more important, their long term day in day out Facebook strategy.

@Derek Halpern Thanks, Derek. I know how to fiddle around with functions.php a bit so that could be the trick. Great tips. I know my site is way overcrowded! Would you say these tips would be the same for a more corporate site with a lot of different services?
Really helpful tips. Ask Derek is there a resource for how to do some of this stuff technically (i.e. sharing buttons on some posts but not others, etc.). I'll head over to his site as well.
Yes social media is now becoming normalised, but I also thinking many find self employment less glamourous than expected. Also social media may be more efficiently and effectively done internally by someone with a long term investment with the company

It is a little long to read as a blog post :-) I was a little lost in the opening paragraphs because I didn't know what Cluetrain was nor who the people were that you mention (would they be discussed in the earlier chapters and should I be embarrassed to admit that I hadn't heard of Cluetrain before?). Then I really got into the part about the impact Cluetrain made and about how your career moved along. It seemed odd to delve into Cluetrain again -- then it got to hard to read on here. Maybe if the paragraphs about you came at the very beginning of the chapter then move into Cluetrain when you did.
Really looking forward to the book now because I can completely understand the shift in business goals into Social Media myself.
