Touche. That's a good point. I'd rather "overpay" for someone than not use the cap space if signing that person helps us win.
You've sold me - I think we should have given him the $25/5.
1 year ago on About that Lecavalier Guy...
Wasn't sold on the 5-year term, especially with some of the kids we have coming up. But we add Vinny to this team and have his contract run out 1 year after Pav's does, seems to make sense given that would be our real window to win another championship. Will Lecavalier still be wort $5M in 4 years? Probably not. But if we became contenders for the next 3 years as a result of this signing, isn't the risk of the last 2 years worth it?
And if Dallas is where he ends up - is it because of the money/term? Could we have offered up $5M over 4 years? Would that have mattered to him? After getting paid out $8M in signing bonuses and 2/3 of his huge contract? I feel like there may have been room to negotiate here but maybe not?
I heard state taxes were a factor (neither Florida nor Texas has them and this is key in getting the full amount of BOTH his buyout and new contract).
What have you guys thought of Lashoff's play? I feel like he's a bit uncomfortable out there (and that's not an indictment on the guy, he's a rookie) and I wouldn't mind seeing a better puck mover out there instead. I can't believe I'm saying this but, you think Coliacovo might be an upgrade at this point?
1 year, 2 months ago on You Can't Win 'Em (In OT) - Game 5 Recap
Hahahaha. But you're right, he is very good at fighting for postiion in front of the net. Either way, I'd like to see Bert back in and have Buckets on the 4th for 5 on 5.
1 year, 3 months ago on It's Time To Release the Bertuzzi
100% agree. And Cleary on our 4th line is really nice depth. And while Buckets did score on the PP last game, I still think Bert is a better option on our 2nd unit.
Replacing a 4th liner with Bert shouldn't affect our chemistry one bit either.
I think the Wings should host a charity event where they auction off the right to hand deliver the compliance buyout agreement to either or both of Sammy and Coliacovo. I'd bid heavy on both.

Sorry, Minny has $12M not $17M and that's probably $4M less now with Pomminville. But the point is, they're not cash strapped or "handcuffed" like you suggesed.
1 year, 3 months ago on Babcock: Helm Out For the Season
1. We didn't offer Parise nearly as much money and we actually had to go and re-up our offer to Suter. But if we had offered the same amount of money to Parise, I think we could have convnced them. Regardless, my point was there was a good free agent class last year and we got Sammy and Coliacovo.
2. Minny has $17M in cap space next summer AFTER the drop in the cap.
3. Are you shitting me about J-Bo? Why would we have had to givve up any of those guys? Stl didn't give up any of their A-prospects. And since you clearly didn't do any research intowhat they actually did give up, one of the prospects was some shittgoale. ot saying we'd have to give up Mrazek, but Jake Paterson would have probably sufficed with a B-Prospect and a 1st.
4. We gave up a 1st in last year's draft for Quincey and NOW we're being stingy with them? Give me a break.
5. And nobody is dropping anybody significant with the amnesty buyouts. It will be overpaid players who don't produce. Think guys like Mike Komisarek or David Booth.
@JOHNxJOHN We only have a couple of more years Datsyuk and Zetterberg's prime. Prices for guys like J-Bo werent even that high. Epic free agent class? Like better than Parise and Surer when we have $20MM in cap space? Cap space and free agents mean shit when we can't sign them.
@reecardoraul @ThroatShot Exactly. This is why Kenny shouldn't have been banking on him coming back and acquired someone to help out upfront.
You know what pisses me off about this? The fact that Holland kept saying that we don't need to make a deal with guys like Helm coming back. All year he kept holding out that Helm would be back. And now that he's not, we dd jack shit at the deadline and no signiicant additions to a team tha needed it.
Hahahahaha I'll agree with that!
1 year, 4 months ago on Sorry Kenny, Shero is the Best GM in the League These Days
Agreed, it's too tough to speculate but they've got a good core and have some good young prospects/players to grow with (Grandlund and Brodin to name 2). I like where this team is at.
@marti783 Agreed that Kronner is a much better value. However, 1. he wasn't a UFA and 2. Suter is 3 years younger and has more upside. Now, as mentioned earlier, I'm not suggeting that Suter is worth the money (I did say he was overpaid) but you don't get a lot of opportunitites to get guys like Suter and Parise for no assets and continue to give your team a chance to win both now and in the future.
With respect to Minny's cap situation next year, look at the guys they have to replace. The biggest need will be their goalie who won't get $6MM next season. They're in good shape next year and per the CBA, the cap will never be lower than $64MM.
@marti783 Are you joking?
Minnesota Cap situation: 2013-14: http://capgeek.com/wild
Ryan Suter's season: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/stats/byposition?pos=D
2nd in D scoring, leads league in ice-time.
I'd also like to point ou that the Wild are 3rd in the conference and have beaten us twice this season.
@Reddy I don't know Reddy. $7.5MM cap hits for 2 franchise (or semi-franchise players) seems to be a good rate. And it's not like they don't have the cap space still. The Wild have like $13MM in space this summer and not a lot of work to do.
Agreed. Not saying he should start offering up Nyquist and Tatar in deals but Pav is 34 with 1 year left on his deal, Z is 31, Kronner is 30. We don't have that many years left where we can take advantage of these generational talents while they're still playing at this level. I still think we blew it in the off season when we undercut Parise and had to go and up our offer to Suter. Yes I think they're a tad overpaid but we were promised an aggressive offseason and all we're left with is an aging core and a 2nd tier contender. Not sure this team can get it done over 4 rounds.
1 year, 4 months ago on Red Wings on Facebook: Pav's Computer
I like this idea to give it a shot but as much as I like Fil, I don't think he's a 2nd line center in this league. I think he's a top 6 winger but he's never produced as a top 6 center. Maybe this year will be different after his breakout season last year but him and Mule have never really had much chemistry.
But we're a deep team up front and we also have a shit ton of cap space for a rental.
1 year, 6 months ago on NOHS Top 6 Forward Preview
If we go into the season with these 12 forwards + Eaves (not even including Mursak and Emmerton), I don't think Nyquist will start the season with us. Babs has indicated that Brunner will be given every opportunity to start in the top 6 and from what I've read, Sammy appears to be the Hudler replacement which is why I had him on that line. And if Gus isn't playing a top 6 role, I can see them sending him down to GR.
Basically, I think Brunner has the leg up here but I could be wrong.
If Brunner doesn't make the team, I'd agree wtih you - Bert with Pav on the top line and maybe Gus can be a nice fit with Cleary and Helm. Or maybe Eaves slots in there. We're a lot deeper than I thought...
1 year, 11 months ago on Forward...Arms! | August
Don't forget Tootoo either.
I can see them starting the year like this:
And don't forget that Kronner scored 15 last year.
Even if guys like Bert, Cleary, and Eaves don't hit 20 this year, I think we'd have at least 6 guys who score between 12-15:
Bert, Cleary, Eaves, Helm, Tootoo, and Miller. I expect everyone in our top 6 to crack 20, so we've got good depth.
2 years ago on Believe in The Wings - Because We Can Score | July
I'm not saying the guy's a Saint, I'm just saying that he's worth the risk. In a BAD year, he scores 20 goals. Our PP needs a boost and we've got cap space. I'm not saying give the guy $7M but at the end of the day, we don't get to bank cap space. So if we've got it, and we can afford to use it, why not take a flier on a guy that we could probably use (talent wise).
Maybe there's more to this than we know. Maybe the Canes need this more than we do. Maybe KH thinks that he can get better deals by waiting out the new CBA. What I do know is that the merit of this decision will be determined by April and then re-evaluated again in June.
2 years ago on Tough to Swallow | July
@tjmendiola @DetCapC19 Well, I think its naive to think that Brunner can produce at the level Semin can in his rookie year (not to mention, his first year on North American ice). I like the Brunner signing and I think he has some real potential, but if it doesn't work out, then what?
The $5M was just a number I put together. I think the reason he got $7m was because it was a 1 year deal. Both parties gave in to something (Semin in years, Carolina in money) to make it work. I could be wrong, but I don't think its out of the question that he would have taken less to have a multi-year deal.
You're right, lots of teams passed on him. But it could be that they're waiting on the Doan signing first. Perhaps Semin was their backup plan to Doan? I don't think its fair to outright assume that teams didn't sign him because of any ill will. Bylsma came out and said he'd like to have Semin. And Carolina said that they did their research and due diligence on him and once they did, they signed him to a 7M deal. Is it possible that their research proved that the stigma around Semin is a bit overblown?
I think comparing playing with Ovie to playing with Pav is like comparing apples to oranges.
$7M is what he was probably seeking on a 1 year deal. For 2 years, we probably could have gotten him at less - say $5-6M. But, if you have the cap space and we desperately need a sniper (and a Right Handed one at that), $7M doesn't seem that risky on a 1-year deal.
@moorecha My thinking behind that is:
1. They didn't want to pay him $7M for 3 years last year, so doing so over 14 years (or 10 years before it falls off) would appear to be worse - although I am aware that their mindset has changed over this past year.
2. There's still a lot of up front money coming Weber's way for the next 6 years ($13M for the following 2 years following a potential trade and $8M for each of the 2 years after that) which they may not be comfortable paying.
3. They need to get to the cap floor so overpaying for Weber probably makes more sense than overpaying for guys who may require deals in the 2-3 year range.
4. If they match and trade, they could probably get a better package than 4 late 1st rounders.
5. From a business standpoint there's a lot of goodwill built up with the fans. Losing your 2 biggest stars for nothing tangible would sting. For $27M, you may be able to recoup some of that this year vs spending similar money on several players to fill out the roster and cap space.
This is all just me thinking out loud but to me this makes the most sense.
2 years ago on This Sucks: Weber Signs Offer Sheet With Flyers | July
I'm wondering if Nashville will match it and trade him next year. They'd have to fork out like $27M for the privelage but they could get more for him next year than they could now. I imagine they would have done that willingly if Detroit made the offer.
Still wish Kenny had made the ofer himself, but it is what it is I guess...
I like Q and I think this is a good deal. He gets $4.5M on the open market easy. Besides, at that price, there's no way we could replace him with anything better.
I bet Abby gets $1.25M-1.5M. Hopefully signs a 3 or 4 year deal.
2 years ago on Quincey Signed | July
@keithdman1 If Weber really wants to leave Nashville he won't sign a long term offer sheet and risk Nashville matching it. And I believe Nadhville would match that.
2 years ago on Wings Should Offer Weber A Contract Like Noone's Ever Seen: $12M+ | July
@austikyl @moorecha That's ridiculous.
There's no way Parise and Suter eat bran flakes.
@moorecha @RedWings3RDP Righ, we would just have to trade or pass on Quincey and Abby.
Still worthwhile, although I really do like Abby. We would still need to sign another depth D-man but that shouldn't be too hard.
@RedWings3RDP That's interesting RW3RDP. I'd have to think about it a little more, but if I had to decide right now, I'd say yes.
Weber is a generational talent and answers A LOT of questions for us. I'm also thinking bigger picture/longer term here.
However, while I think we've improved our depth up front compared to last year, I'm not convinced we have enough fire power for a long cup run. But neither NJ or LA scored a lot of goals over the final 2 rounds and I'd argue that this d-core we'd be putting together would trump both of theirs.
It's a tough one, but I think if we had a shot at getting Weber in the same summer we lost Lidstrom, we'd have to do whatever it took to get him.
@RedWings3RDP Definitely not.
I was pencilling Q&A at around $5m.
We'd have a bit more since we'd have to trim down our roster size to 23. I imagine Mursak and Emmerton would be the first casualties which would spare us an additional $1m.
The guy could fuck my wife and I'd still want him on this team.
As long as we make the playoffs, no player drafted with those picks would be as good as Weber.
Here's the best part: Even if Nashville matches, they can't trade him for 1 year after the they match which means he'd walk as a Free Agent next July and we could then get him for free.
Nashville would be smart to take 4 1st rounders. What would be even smarter would be if we told them we were doing this and forced them to work out a deal with us. If Poile plays hardball, we do the offer sheet.
4 1st rounders would be WELL worth it.
@Jay Argentina Keep in mind Jay that UFAs can't be used as comparables during arbitration so Carle's $5.5M will be a non-factor.
2 years ago on The Price Is Right: Quincey Edition | July
I'm comfortable giving him what he earned last year. I'd even be happy with a slight raise if required. Look around, there aren't a lot of better d-men out there and we aren't exactly swimming in top 4 D.
@Reddy $90M was our offer to Suter not Parise. If I were a betting man, I'd guess that we offered $80m to Parise. I know for a fact that we offered less to him than we did to Suter (per Helen St. James). Not saying it came down to money but I don't think we went as hard after Parise as we should have.
2 years ago on Kenny On The Right Track? | July
I think Chris is onto something. Parise said that it was important that him and Suter made the same amount and apparently we were way off on the money offered to Parise (we offered Suter more). We know that Minny and NJ were the final 2 for Parise and Minny and Detroit were the final 2 for Suter. If we had offered more to Parise, would we have been team #3 on his shortlist? Would that have convinced both to sign here?
I get the impression that we were #1 on Suter's list but the allure of playing with Parise and Parise not having Detroit on his shortlist is what probably shifted Suter towards Minny.
Not overly concerned right now, but after losing Lidstrom and having Suter come up as a Free Agent, the timing will never be better than it was this summer.
@garth I just jizzed a little...

2 years, 2 months ago on Oh God: Lidstrom Announcement Tomorrow | May
Ok, so this could be lots of things:
1. Suter is meeting with the Preds this week so KH and Lidas want to make sure he knows that Lidstrom is coming back.
2. Lidstrom is going in for surgery on his ankle and will decide on his future upon the completion of his rehab.
3. The Wings are going in on some venture and Lidstrom is the face. The announcement is that Lidstrom has also invested.
4. Lidstrom will be a player-coach next season.
I can't think of anything else.
@RedWings3RDP I don't think Allen would cost too much. He's a UFA so no assets need to go the other way.
Also, while Rutherford was re-signing Ruutu and Gleason instead of trading them at the deadline, he chose not to do the same with Allen. And while Allen was available at the deadline, nobody acquired him (could mean that CAR wasn't getting enough for him or maybe he's not as good as I'm making him out to be). Either way, I'm not convinced there will be a huge bidding war for his services.
With respect to Richards and Parise - Philly decided that Richards wasn't the guy they wanted to build around anymore. Not getting that sense out of LA. Also, NJ wants to keep Parise. If he leaves it will be his choice, not the Devils. But you're right, having an "A" or a "C" doesn't protect you from anything. I just figure if they think enough of him to trust him with a leadership role on a young team that they aren't likely to move him.
2 years, 2 months ago on Defensemen We Could Use | May
Well, Commie got hurt in training camp and never recovered. I also don't think he's as good as Allen.
How about Bryan Allen? He's a defensive defenceman, big (6'5), mobile for a guy his size, and would add some nice sandpaper to our back end. He's a UFA, made $2.9M last year and won't be signed before July 1.
Allen was also 4th in Blocked Shots last season:
I like RedWings3RDP's idea about Matt Greene. If they decide to purse Stuart this summer, Greene may not be a luxury they can't afford anymore. However, with that being said, he's their Assistant Captain and @ $3M, he's good value. Can't see them moving him.
BTW: what's the process here in asking Miller to change his number? Does Holland approach him? Does Lidstrom make the first move? Or do you just let Suter handle it? I figure since we can't sign Suter till July 1 that we could just get the ball rolling now and get some of that paperwork done.
