A few random thoughts...

Felt sorry for Brassard and Pouliot (an Hags) getting a minus on that goal where Hags hustled to get back.  Cally and Richie slowly headed to the bench and made it there while a 3 on 3 became a 5 on 3. Because Brassard and Pouliot were barely on the ice they get a minus. Small complaint I know.

Not sure I wanted Pyatt to get hit like that either but we all know only an injury would get him out of the lineup - just wish it wasn't to the head.

McD on the PP - funny how Torts never thought he could play there yet trotted Girardi out on the PP on a regular basis.  So maybe Hags wouldn't suck on the PP either?

Lastly, I noticed the Kreider kiss to Talbots helmet as well and it almost looked like he knew immediately he'd get teased for it.  Good catch, Kev

Saucer pass was necessary on that play to get over sticks AND lead the players and it was a perfect saucer pass.   You'd be surprised how many NHL players can't make that pass.  I don't know much about soccer - maybe it's an easier pass there

8 are RFA contracts and of those 2 are Mash and Falk.  Need t ensure Kreider and JMoore get locked up.  Other RFAs (Zucc, Talbot, MDZ, Brassard) have reasons for/against signing and will come down to cap increase and rest of this year performance.

There are also 8 UFA contracts - players were Rangers could easily lose (no offer sheet match).  Oviously top 2 that need to be signed in this category are Hank and Cally.  In the 'let walk' category of UFA are DMoore, Pyatt and Pouliot.  In the 'maybe/maybe not' category are Girardi, Sralman and Boyle (need to have a reasonable value signing for these I'd guess).

I'm gonna give Pouliot a pass on this one since he was shoved to the ground in the first place with no call.  Even the entire broadcast team originally thought it was a Pittsburgh penalty.

That said, Pouliot, Pylon and Dorsett are about tied in brainfart penalties this year - way too many.

Normally I'd agree, but this network adores the Pens except for Olczyk, who might be the least biased announcer I've ever listened to.  Seems like the Pens have rivalries with everyone because next week on 'Rivalry Wednesday on NBCSN' the Pens are on for the 3rd straight week.

Re Emrick specifically, he's Pittsburg born and raised and I thought last night it showed.  You'd have thought the Rangers were down 2-0 after the first and about 8 minutes into the second when the Pens finally had a good shift, Emrick starts to say how they were dominating.  Olczyk quickly reminds him it's been all Rangers until this shift.

I do agree that Sam and Joe are a tough listen these days.  Would love to see Albert on a regular basis on the TV side.

The call I disagree with is that the Rangers should have gotten a man advantage penalty in the Mashinter-Simmonds scuffle.  Simmonds pulled his own helmet off which should be an additional 2 minutes.  Mashinter's helmet (and Dorsett's too for that matter) was pulled off by Simmonds so they don't get the extra 2.  But the refs seemed a little intimidated by the Philthy crowd all night

Gotta disagree.  While Hags doesn't always handle a pass cleanly, he's one of the few guys that can go into the corner to bttle for a puck win the battle and then carry the puck free.  Sometimes his feet move faster than his hands - if that's what you're saying - but 'strong on the puck'? - I'd say he's one of the stronger ones weve got.

@ThrSage - I wish you would stop giving Torts a pass on this team.  I agree we don't have top end talent 4 lines deep, what with our 3rd line being as bad or worse than our 4th line. But when the coach continues to send our 3rd line center out to the tune of 20 minutes, going 4-17 on faceoffs, when he switched d pairings in games 1 and 2 to as bad a set of pairings as possible, when opposing teams can take point shots at will (most playof goals have been off of point shots, deflections or rebounds off point shots), when there's not even a breakout play other than send it up the boards to the wing where the opposing d-man is always there either first or simultaneously, when the players haven't a clue as to what the PP is supposed to look like or what their responsibilities are, when the ego is so big that a special teams only coach is not brought in - all of these are on Torts.  It's just so frustrating to watch - as someone else said, there's no margin for error in Torts 'system'.  If you ask me, Torts owes his job to Hank.

Truly wish Kenny Albert was the TV guy.  And Micheletti hasn't been as bad this season, but to not even call out Ovechkin for that hit on McD was typical.                 Now onto the Kreider thing - he's so f'n damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.  So afraid to do the wrong thing with Torts that he runs across the ice to be on his wing, only to leave the man open on the other side.  Watch it over and the real culpret is MDZ, who once again stayed way too long deep in the offensive zone leaving his side wide open when the line change was being made.

While I have been inclined to blame Torts for Kreider's woes this season, I think there is responsibility on Kreider's part as well.  His efforts in CT before the lockout was resolved left much to be desired - didn't work as hard pretty much knowing a spot was there for him based on last year's postseason. I think Torts sensed as much and tried to give him some tough love - just that tough love doesn't work with everyone and Kreider has regressed as a result.  Time for Torts to take the reins off and for Kreider to prove he's got NHL chops

Boyle had a good game and so did Miller, but the game that Pyatt played last night was as bad as any I've seen from any player this season and that's saying a lot.  EVeryone talks about Gabby not getting the puck out of the zone when he gets it on the halfboards but Pyatt is the worst offender and last night was the worst of the worst for him.  If Asham's ready I sit Pyatt.

Not arguing about Gabby avoiding contact, but last night I saw much less of that from him.  There were so many people to point fingers at last night, that Gabby was actually one of our better guys out there against the Jets and that's really saying something for the rest

He kept them in the game but damn, his rebound control is attrocious lately and leads to more scoring chances where he then has to make some additional incredible saves.  Some of it is his own doing

definitely agree - fine if he stays but please - not on a top line!  His puckhandling was awful and even Boyle probably could have potted that nice feed he got and fluttered into Enroth.  Haley's better than the Bickel option and since he's much healthier, better than Asham at this point as well.  But I think Torts could have sent the message clearly with a few shifts, not the whole game including with the goalie pulled.

Blame MDZ all you'd like but Captain Cally shares a big part of the blame on that 3rd goal.  Still on the ice long after his linemates made their change, he was all over the place trying to block shots which left the Ottawa point man wide open for the shot that yielded the rebound to Silferberg.  Cally's my hero but this was one of his worst games this season.  He seemed tentative with the puck, lost board battles he usually wins and his defensive zone play led to the gamewinner.

I reread your article and I think you said 'if Bickel has another solid game'?  When was the solid game he had - I must have missed it.  He's just as bad in the defensive zone as a forward as he is at defense.  The puck comes to his wing and he just banks it out of the zone and back to the opposition.  Hard to get line changes when he's on the ice. I'll take Mashinter back - just let him know why he's up here - not to score goals.

I agree that Boyle has 'minimUM skill' as in what a seasoned  AHLer has.  I mentioned "minimAL OFFENSIVE skills" which is a little different than minimum skills and implies a little more, especially offensively.  Think of someone like Dominic Moore for what I'm thinking of.

Agree - Gabby and Miller don't really belong on a checking line do they? That said, move Boyle to 4th line with Powe and Halpern and there's your checking line.  Just need a center with minimal offensive skills to play with Gaborik and Miller - that's the only issue with this roster right now.

Boyle in front of the net on a PP has been tried several times.  The guy just has no balance and ends up on his keister.  Problem isn't who is or isn't in front, it's that point shots are either so weak (Staal, Strahl), don't get through (Gerardi, Gilroy) or miss the net entirely (MDZ).

2 thoughts #1 - I know you and many others have come down hard on Kreider but until he sees more than a handful of shifts a game and until he's separated from a line that includes Boyle, I won't pass judgement on his game.  #2 - Halpern's been solid but is getting a lot more credit than is warranted. Granted, he's not expected to score but his stats aren't that different from Boyle's and we know what a horror its been watching Boyle.  I don't know the answer to our center situation other than a trade

not sure why anyone would be enamoured about Boyle 'responding' to his benching.  Except for a few early shifts he looked like the same old Boyle - on his butt a lot.  Seems like Torts was playing for the tie in the 3rd by benching Richie and using Boyle almost every other shift

I liked a lot about tonight but the PP was still not one of those things.  When the shorthanded team outshoots you during your PP and the PP goal you score is on a breakout play, the PP still sucks.  Until we get someone better, I still prefer MDZ over Gerardi, Staal on PP.  Would like to see McD on PP more tho

Does ferreiro play center?  Could be one reason - Halpern's been pretty much used exclusively on the PK and his faceoff% is awful.

Is Asham out for more than a game or 2?  Could be another reason (anything's better than Bickel). While I think the Newbury promotion fills the Bickel issue for now, Newbury could be just like Segal and if he really sux, he'll be subbed in by Ferreiro.

I'm all for the trade but to say the trade was for "two role players and a prospect who's not even a lock to be a servicable NHL defenseman" is an insult to Dubi and AA and maybe Erixon too.  Everyone forgets Dubi was our leading scorer a few seasons ago.  And I'm still not convinced Erixon couldn't have turned out to be more if not for Torts handling of him - he certainly offers everything Stralman does and more.

Nash hasn't even played a preseason game for the blueshirts yet, so let's hold off on this being the biggest steal since McD for at least a half season or so.

@KevinDeLury I hope St. Croix is the real deal and doesn't fall into what Bourque and Thomas might - too small/soft for NHL.  I love the small guys but you need that little something extra.  Based on last year's Traverse city and training camp last year (and rookie camp this season) I actually think the top 'small' guy in the Rangers' system with NHL ability is McColgan, but he'll do another year of juniors for sure.

Bourque and Thomas have yet to prove that they can overcome their lack of size.  Yogan - plays center - which could help him and he's got enough offensive upside to hold down a 3rd line spot with Boyle on 4th, but he's been injury prone so he needs to stay healthy.  I still think Marek Hrivik stands a better chance than Bourque or maybe even Thomas.  He wouldn't be the first undrafted players to make an impact with the Rangers (Girardi).

IF EVER there was a game that begged for Hagelin to be in the lineup, it was Montreal. Whoever didn't see that the Rangers as currently constituted would have problems with the speed of the Habs, isn't paying attention (Torts, Sather?). That's why you have a few extra spots on the roster - so you're not stuck using Deveaux, Woywitka, etc against teams build for speed. I'd say go with Deveaux against a Boston, etc but Rangers dug their own grave for this one.

I get it about moving Kundratek - all teams must decide at some point to cut ties with their homegrown prospects that aren't working out as expected. But regarding Bouchard, for Gorton to say he "needed a change of scenery" could equally be said about Kundratek, as it was certainly the case for Horak.
