I went ahead and got a Furley and have been riding it since Fall. Minimal upgrades so far (saddle, seat-post, longer stem).
It is pretty heavy for a SS, but It handles well, feels light and is pretty comfy on pavement. Off-Road, it feels really stable; a solid ride but the weight is more noticeable.
It is a real fun, go anywhere ride; my only gripe is the (lack of) toe clearance on tight corners, you need to be really mindful not to toe-lap the tires.
