1 year, 11 months ago on Another Game 7 For The Rangers
And at this point Stepan is leading all forwards in time on ice per game in the playoffs at 23:25. Cally is 3rd at just under 23 minutes/game, and leads all forwards with 13 blocked shots and has 20 hits. They've been great defensively, especially together on the PK, and they're starting to put it together offensively too. It'd be nice to see them connect for a shorthanded goal tomorrow night, they've been close a bunch of times this series.
1 year, 11 months ago on Tic, Tac, Goal!!!!!!
Stepan was tied for 2nd in the league with 6 GWGs this season. Started slowly in the regular season and finished very strongly, and it's looking like the same thing for this series.
Faceoffs are huge. It seems like the Caps get all their goals, both on the power play and at even strength, after winning offensive zone faceoffs and getting in front of Hank for screens and tips.
Win the faceoff battle, stay out of the box, and win the series. The offense will come with puck possession as they showed last game.
1 year, 11 months ago on Where the Rangers Goals Are Coming From
As long as Richards stops turning the puck over just inside the blue line, the Rangers should be able to neutralize a lot of what the Caps are trying to do.
And stay out of the damn penalty box unless you're going to take a Capital with you, preferably for 5 minute majors.
1 year, 11 months ago on Rangers to Face Very Different Capitals Team
Moore needs to be on the first unit, with the most creative forwards, Zucc, Brassard, Stepan, and Nash. No coaching except for setting the lines, otherwise just let them go.
And Moore should play on the left point, Stepan on the right. I understand the merits of going the opposite way so your stick is to the middle of the ice, but the Rangers are awful at keeping the puck in the zone, and don't score off shots from the point anyway.
1 year, 12 months ago on Scoring a Power PLay Goal Is Sort of Important for the Rangers
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG If they really wanted Marc, I'd ask for Skinner, Ryan Murphy, and a 1st. The Hurricanes would most likely say no, but I wouldn't take anything less than that if I were Sather.
His actual trade value might not be as high as it should be due to the injuries he's dealt with the last two years, so even if they decided to trade him, I don't think they'd ever get fair value.
1 year, 12 months ago on Jared Staal To Make NHL Debut Against Rangers
Is there a reason they don't call them the Hartford or Connecticut Rangers? The Bruins, Devils, Pens, Sens, Sharks, and Stars do that, and the uniforms are very similar to the NHL club's, which is good for marketing, especially when the team is fairly close the parent club's city like in this case.
1 year, 12 months ago on Connecticut Whale Will Return To Being The Hartford Wolfpack
Toronto plays the Lightning Wednesday and then the Panthers Thursday, so I don't really see them imploding. Highest realistic seed is 6th, which is pretty attainable. The Rangers hold the 2nd tiebreaker since they took 7 of 8 points against the Islanders, in case they end up tied in ROW. Just gotta get that extra point these next three games.
1 year, 12 months ago on Rangers Move Into 7th Place
Much more speed in the top-9 now, though they'll suffer in the circle and on the PK somewhat. Kreider played well with Richards before his last demotion, maybe he'll get a chance to help Richards turn his season around before he gets demoted to the 4th line.
2 years ago on Boyle Misses Practice; Stepan Banged Up; Staal Returns
If Sather were to step down from both his roles with the organization, I wouldn't mind them bringing in Burke as Team President with Gorton or Clark as GM. Despite his time in Toronto, he's had plenty of success, including being the GM for the US Olympic team in 2010.

@Betweentheworlds Asham has to play, only have 12 forwards now. The team just got a lot older in the last 24 hours
Seems like it just worked out like that. He's been in the city and was at the Garden last night, and today Hagelin had a maintenance day, so they decided to get a look at him while he's around. Could end up needing him to play on short notice tomorrow if they make a trade involving roster players since the player(s) they acquire wouldn't get here until after the game.
2 years ago on Fast Skates With Rangers; Miller & Kreider on Expanded 4th Line; Hagelin gets Maintenance Day
Kevin he was just a placeholder for Hagelin for the day so that the 4th line guys, which now includes both Kreider and Miller, could get a skate in together.
@gravey94 A couple media guys just said it's a maintenance day for him, so hopefully that's the case. I was worried about that too but I think it's all good.
2 years ago on Rangers Like Glencross; Boyle Talks Heating Up; Gaborik Rumors Cooling Down
Seems like Hagelin isn't practicing. Which could mean that Fast is just holding his place for today with Boyle and Pyatt and keeping the other guys on the 4th line.
I think we need a levity as a fan base right now. Great work. If they get shut out again tonight though, all the levity in the world isn't gonna make a difference, and if you feel like actually shutting the blog down, I wouldn't blame you.
2 years ago on I'm Sorry I Hope You Can Forgive Me
@maxrokz @KevinDeLury Can't take Boyle out of the lineup with Powe already sitting, it destroys the PK forward depth, which is much thinner as it is with Halpern gone. I think Saturday it should be Zucc in for Newbury and taking Boyle's spot in the top 9, and Powe in for Pyatt on the 4th line with Boyle and Asham.
2 years ago on Zuccarello Out; Same Line-up vs. Senators
@KevinDeLury @JoshKaye Kreider's been back and forth with the team this year, and he's played on North American ice all year. Plus he's been traveling back and forth from Hartford, not Russia. I just think they need to get Zucc a practice, or at least another skate with the team, before he's in the lineup. He should be in against Montreal either way probably.
Interesting that you mention Kreider, because signing Zucc was sort of predicated on Kreider being a wild card the rest of the year. In between the beginning of the negotiations and the actual signing of Zucc, Kreider has turned into a totally different player.
@KevinDeLury He's had one pre-game skate with the team, and they're coming off a 5 goal outburst. Lineup should be the same outside of the minor swap of Powe for Pyatt for PK purposes. Leave the top 3 lines alone for tonight, and if they don't score at least a few goals, dress Zucc on Saturday.
I think the biggest problem is that they forgot how long it took some of those guys to grow into their roles under Torts. Because of the shortened season, the replacement grinder types haven't gotten the time the old guys had to maximize their abilities in Tortorella's system. Prust wasn't the Prust we all came to know and love after only 32 games. Dubi had some adjustments once Torts became coach, and even Feds was playing in a different Torts system than he previously had. Aside from Boyle, the new guys haven't played enough in this system yet to be deemed failures as grinders compared to the players who they replaced. We all had the expectation they'd try to step in day 1 and replace the 2012 versions of Prust, Dubi, and Feds, but it was an unfair expectation. They can only replace what those guys brought when they first got here.
All of that doesn't mean that the Rangers don't need help in the grinding department. Clowe isn't worth a 1st rounder, but maybe one of the 3rds. Hopefully Sather, if he's well enough, can make some trade magic happen this week.
2 years ago on Audio: Torts Admits Rangers Miscalculated Impact of Losing Grinders
Apparently Lundqvist is feeling pretty well today- making jokes on twitter:
HLundqvist30 Next stop, Ottawa. Hear rumors that the Hobbit is taking a break filming with Gandalf to meet with us up there.. Can someone confirm this?
2 years ago on Is Lundqvist Playing With a Concussion?
@Betweentheworlds @Melissa (blknblueshirts) @KevinDeLury Aside from the headache problems the last few days, Torts hasn't overused Lundqvist. Every game is a playoff game from here on out, and travel and back-to-backs have been at a minimum so far. He'll sit out one of the next two, and maybe one end of a back-to-back later on, and even if he plays 14 of the final 16 it won't be overuse.
Hopefully the HSN line stays together the rest of the way though. Powe sat out, Nash sat out. I don't think Torts is forcing Hank to play.
Hank is too savvy to mention this in the media without already making sure everything checks out with the medical staff. He should get either tomorrow or Saturday in Montreal off, deservedly so, and hopefully with a few days rest he'll feel fine.
Newbury didn't really do anything to get bumped, but he doesn't kill penalties while Powe and Boyle both do. Pyatt needs to sit a few games. It's important to get Gaborik playing the right side or he'll never do anything

@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG @jtf1218 I was thinking trying to go after Getzlaf for this summer until he re-signed. Buying out Richards opens up a lot of cap space, but I don't know if there will be anyone out there besides maybe Ribeiro (on a shorter term deal) worth spending it on this offseason. 2014 when Gaborik comes off the books (if he's not traded this year) might be the best time to amnesty Richards and go all out to sign Malkin.
2 years ago on Richards Has Never Experienced A Slump Like This
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG He can't sign back with the Rangers if they use an amnesty buyout on him. Unless there's a free agent center available this year to use the money on, it's not really worth it to buy him out until after next year. Give him a summer of conditioning where he's serious, plus a Torts training camp to see if he can get back to where he was last season. If he can't buy him out.
@Ryan_Heda Good lines. Those top three lines are the most balanced they can be probably, though the 2nd line leaves a lot to be desired defensively. Miller, Cally, and a rejuvenated Kreider are good enough defensively to play against a top line but actually produce offensively the way a Boyle centered 3rd line can't.
2 years ago on Nash, Miller, Stralman Miss Practice
The right wings should play on the right. Nash has scored a lot of his goals from the right side, including the goal on Tuesday night when DZ got him the puck with space and had room to shoot.

Looks like Hank is in tonight. I know most disagreed with me yesterday, but it's the right move with two full days off before the Caps on Sunday, plus games in Ottawa and Montreal later next week of which one will be Biron's.
@scrangersfan @LanceGold1 Well that's just ridiculous. He doesn't seem to like Gaborik at all, but he's playing on the first line with Nash and Richards. It's not a personal thing with Kreider, it's that Kreider's game is somewhat lacking in all areas that are offense, and when he makes a mistake he hangs his head instead of forgetting about it. That's where he differs from Miller, who also makes mistakes, but doesn't let them affect how he plays his next shift.
2 years, 1 month ago on Source Confirms Rangers Interest in Boyle
@KevinDeLury @ChrisP Stepan has more shorthanded points than Richards has power play points.
@ChrisP It's sad that it's come to that. He's been supplanted as the best center on the team, and as the power play qb, which are the only two reasons he got the contract he was given.
If Sather wasn't willing to include Kreider in a deal this past summer when his value was astronomically higher than it is now, why would they trade him in the next two weeks? This front office doesn't make bad trades. Questionable free agent signings, sure, but they always win trades.
@MeetTheMatts Couldn't have picked a worse day to curse Sather
I don't like the idea of getting rid of Gaborik or Richards until they have a legit 1st liner lined up to replace at least one of them. For instance, if Getzlaf made it to free agency this summer, buying out Richards and going after Getzlaf probably would've been the right thing to do. Gaborik is scheduled to score 40 next year, and Richards still has time to turn it around, though he won't be on the team past next season unless he has some miraculous turnaround. At that point, that's a lot of money off the books, and hopefully they can find someone in free agency to replace the production of a center and a right wing.
@Jbianco I think they're going to go game by game with it. Tomorrow the lineup might be totally devoid of toughness with Asham not back yet and Bickel scratched, but it's the Panthers, so they can probably get away with it. Even Sunday they might not have Asham back yet. Once the opponents get tougher, Asham might be in for Pyatt or whoever is playing poorly, or Bickel for Hamrlik.
2 years, 1 month ago on Kreider Recalled; Haley Assigned; Biron Likely Tomorrow; Asham Sunday
Kreider just called up, Haley sent down. I imagine it has to do with the Panthers not being a tough, divisional game.
2 years, 1 month ago on Rangers Talking to Kings About Gaborik?
Whenever Kreider comes back up, I hope he starts using his frame to get to the net the way Nash and Callahan do. Miller almost pulled one off last night too, which was great to see. It'd be nice to see Boyle and Pyatt do the same, but that's probably wishful thinking. The forwards are still not creating enough offense, outside of Stepan and Callahan all the goals recently have been plays made by defensemen.

2 years, 1 month ago on Rangers Linked to Defensemen
The three RWs have all been at their best playing RW. Obviously that doesn't work unless you can roll three lines evenly, which they can't do as currently constructed. I know Torts might not even want the kid back up yet, but bringing back Kreider could help balance everything. Hags-Step-Nash Pyatt-Richards-Gabby Kreider-Miller-Cally and then three of Boyle, Halpern, Powe, Haley, and Asham would help even things out and gets all the RWs in their correct position. Pyatt hasn't scored except when playing with Richards, and that line of Callahan with the rookies was pretty good in their short time together.
2 years, 1 month ago on Gabby-Richards-Nash Reunited; Asham Skates Again
@Medvjed004 Not exactly, because there are wild cards. If they finish 1st in the division they can possibly face the 4th or 5th team from the other division in the first round, then a team from their own division in the 2nd round, then the winner of the other division in the conference finals. Or if they finish 4th or 5th they could possibly face the top team from the other division, or miss the playoffs altogether, depending how the wild cards shake out. Then they'd play through that division's playoffs, and if they win it they'd face the winner of their own division in the conference finals.
Not to make it more confusing, but technically, the winner of each division's playoff could be the 4th place team from the other division, who would then play each other in the conference finals. They really should have kept the system the same, division winners plus the next 6 best, or done straight up divisional playoffs like there used to be.
2 years, 1 month ago on Realignment Approved
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Yes, that's correct. With the wild card, the #1 team in the conference plays the 2nd wild card, which could be a better team than the 4th place team in the conference winner's division, who they'd play under regular divisional playoff rules. The advantage comes when the two 4th place teams are the wild cards and the #1 seed plays the 4th place team with fewer points. The disadvantage outweighs the advantage, however, and that just shouldn't be the case.
