@TomJackson @RobertWright1 Why have referenda? There's no particular evidence that any part of Ukraine - even Crimea - is desperate to join Russia. To say that there need to be referenda is to buy Vladimir Putin's analysis of the situation.
The people of Ukraine need a competent, functioning state. Everything that's happening is putting off the day that can happen.

@TomJackson Er, the piece says (and I've seen it reported elsewhere) that the Russian invasion in E Ukraine is pretty unpopular with a lot of the people there. Don't they get a say?
You seem to be falling into precisely the trap the piece criticizes - of thinking Ukraine doesn't matter in and of itself. It's a large country of 46m people, very big by European standards. It's shocking to see it treated as so much geopolitical collateral damage.
