@emily_levant  There's a Chuck Jones version of The Phantom Tollbooth from 1970 that's not bad, but I like the way you're thinking about a new version.

The Corrs are the worst! They also did a heart-breakingly boring cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart."http://youtu.be/JHX7QYyluhc

The Mountain Goats do a lot of Bible-based music. Each track in The Life of the World to Come is named after/inspired by a specific Biblical verse, and the music is of course, wonderful.

It would be cool if more guys in their 20s would read some of these. It might make some of them a little less clueless. That being said, I love this list. I'd probably add Joan Didion to it. The first Didion I read was A Book of Common Prayer (in a college lit class in which we seemed to read mostly mid-20th century novels about sad, middle-class white men), and I've loved her ever since. And, it's possible that one of the greatest mistakes of my life was reading Delta of Venus at about 12. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone.
