@sdjeff Jeff, you still alright with last night's game?  Thanks for giving Drunk On Sunday your support.  I can't guarantee it will be as good as The Dark Tower or anything.

This is all that is left to say about last night's game.  I'm not writing a full post until after the SF game.  That one isn't worth the time I already wasted watching it.  I don't know about being so quick to dismiss Mathews.  Brown (and possibly Oliver and Grice) are good for depth, but they aren't Mathews.  He's got talent, but that doesn't mean that he'll be worth what it takes to retain him.

As for Pagano, Daniel hit the nail on the head.  That defense was the same one we saw last season.  When shit counts, Butler needs to step up so that Weddle isn't the only guy out there making plays.

Antonio, I agree completely.  As I said after watching the game, we never made Wheeden pay for telegraphing his throws.  I've also never heard the word exceptional used as much as Billy Ray Smith did when referring to Dallas' backup QB.  As for Freeney, it might depend on how healthy Liuget and others are.  I will post before the Seattle game.

Having watched the entire first half, I would also be pissed about 2 goaline drives wtithout a TD, but the second string O Line was in the for the other one.  Clemens wouldn't be running a draw in Sept.  But Rivers looked really nimble on the outside rollout to Green.

As for Woodhead, I think his size is part of his skill set.  Off to the show

Having watched the 1st qtr, I am more concerned with the slack defense (sans Liuget, Flowers, Freeney, etc)  The book on Wheeden is that he telegraphs and we never made him pay.

Mathews went over the top against Seattle and we loved it in August.  Hopefully, he will be careful as he was with those punishing inside runs last season.  But if he's hurt or fumbling, we've got depth for this year and beyond I think.

I will remind you but I know you don't need a reminder that Mathews fumbled on the goalline in AZ last Aug but it was stripped back and we scored.

He did only fumble twice last year.  I will post something after I finish watching.  I'm off to the Warren Haynes Garcia Symphony

@AntonioGrilloNeto

I sat in the end zone of Baltimore in 2000.  They won the SB that year.  The 2008 Miami game I sat up top.  If you poke around I bet ticket sites can tell you the best places to sit.

Yeah, Johnny Winter was a blow.  It being Jerry's bday today, I was going to put something up later.

The running game should be interesting since Mathews wasn't entirely trusted until after that Washington shit show I witnessed first hand.

The book may end up being featured on the site if I have to publish or promote myself. Thanks for asking.

@AntonioGrilloNeto Antonio I promise to keep you updated with the book.  I am planning on going to the Buffalo game on 9/21.  As for Flowers, you are right that the pass rush is huge.  Attaochu could be a nice shot in the arm.  I don't expect Freeney to last either, despite the bison diet he was raging about to the Union Tribune.  Maybe Liuget's shoulder healing will get him back to where he was.  Ingram returning did wonders for that defense.

As for Flowers, I think it's opportunity.  I was most impressed that Telesco got him on a team-friendly deal.  I read all the stuff about him being a loner that Pat Kirwin wrote for CBS.

He's got better skills than most of the CBs we've got--especially our last free agent signing.

Jeff, what really sucked about the Williams injury was that we won that game in dramatic fashion but lost every other one and missed the playoffs.  Stephen Alexander was our tight end that season, fuck.

Here's my take.  Yes, Wright dropped a pick on Denver's first drive.  But they did get two turnovers in the first half.  What sucked is that Rivers wasn't let loose until too late.  It sucked that Mathews suffered the LT fate in January, but when he clearly couldn't go how much time did we waste on Woodhead runs?  Maybe Wisenhunt shouldn't have taken interviews this week, but jobs.

Also sucks that in Foxboro, Pitt, so many guys get hurt to end season.  Yes, with more talent we could take another step but we are all still waiting on that one magical season, still.

Thanks as always for reading and watching.

I think you were the one guy I brought back with me from Bleacher Report, Antonio.  The red zone and short yardage will be an issue especially with Mathews being hurt.  I have no doubt he will try to go, but Woodhead cannot be an every down back.  Brown can't be expected to go for fifty again.  In 2008, when LT was hurt, I thought we should have used Michael Bennett more in Pittsburgh.  As great as Sproles was and is, he's not an every down guy either.  Even the Saints would never use him that way.

Great game today, obviously.  I will write something in full tomorrow night and post a video on Friday.  The best thing about today was that we did to Cincy what the Jets did to us.  The clouds rolled in and the longer we stuck around the more they wilted.  This team is not afraid to lose.  That's a good thing. #Janurivers

Well, Rivers hasn't been Mr. December against Cincy since 2009.  Allen separated his shoulder but will play.  He hurt it earlier in the year and obviously did OK.  Fluker practiced and appears to be ready.  They are as healthy as they've been all year.

Whit, I've decided that Th. night actually means something but the Bolts need to finally play like they have nothing to lose.  They've got three games remaining, all against division rivals.  Baltimore and Miami will probably not go 1-2.  However, they could.  But the Chargers need to play these last three games like they are their own private postseason.  As April Powers told her husband Kenny on Eastbound and Down earlier this year, it's time to fuck some shit up.

So Whit, what happens next year? We miss the playoffs for the 4th straight season.  Is McCoy going to make better decisions in game in 2014?  He runs Mathews 3 times in a row yesterday but not in DC.

What sucks Jeff is that even if they shocked Denver on Thurs, they'd still lose a tiebreaker to Miami and Baltimore is streaking.  It's always too little, too late.

What sucks Whit is that we can honestly say that Norv would have 5 wins at this point.  If you credit McCoy for Rivers' improvement, OK... I don't think you do though.  McCoy's turtling cost us at least the Wash game and probably the TN too

True, but I can't get over the fact that McCoy continues to be gutless and stupid.  If Rivers hadn't hit Tutu, we could have chalked up last week as another game he blew with conservatism or bad in game decisions.  He took that penalty just as he did in the Raiders game and the opposition converted on our shit secondary.

8 months, 3 weeks ago on Alive II

Sorry you had to see it, Jeff.  McCoy is really annoying me.  I don't necessarily think two punts within the 40 was the problem all in itself.  But playing to tie at the half, accepting that penalty and getting run over all day...

Sad that the sense was the game didn't matter.  It should have.

Just finished watching the NFL Replay version of the game.  Here's a couple of observations:

Keenan Allen is so good that I am already worried about him leaving and becoming a VJ-like diva.

That drive at the end of the first half by Rivers was huge.

The throw in the end zone that should have been picked was followed by a stand in the red zone by the defense that was also enormous.

Pagano ripped Jahleel Addae a new asshole after he let up that long pass on a 3rd down blitz.  Simms (who I wasn't listening to on Sunday since I turned off the sound) said that our spacing was fucked up.

It was nice after the Titans game to shock someone else at the end.  We'll see if it means anything.  Enjoy your Turkey Day and I will talk to you Saturday.

Addae also almost got teabagged by Stuckey in Jacksonville.

According to Michael Gehlken @UTgehlken 2h

The early sense is Chargers tackle D.J. Fluker (right knee) is OK.

Big win, we'll see what it means.  Certainly, McCoy/Wiz decision to play soft on the second down with the lead could have doomed us.  KC had the chances with 2 near game-sealing picks, but we made them pay.  Rivers' taking a sack on the final drive could have been fatal as well.

Do we win if KC doesn't lose two pass rushers?  Doesn't matter.  The Chargers didn't get the benefit of the doubt on that one PI call.  They are at least relevant (as Whit says) after Turkey Day.

I have a lot of problems with McCoy/Wishenhunt.  They weren't aggressive when it mattered.  When Novak missed the field goal, I said that's what we deserve for settling for 3.  This team is still too much about not quite enough and too late to matter.

He pats himself on the back for saying the schedule will be too tough in the second half but admits that he should have taken control during the last 22 seconds.  It's commendable that he didn't throw anyone under the bus and all.

DC, don't get me wrong.  I think Canepa, Acee, Jerry Magee are all front running windbags.  If you watch my Tweets I have essentially told Acee not to pull a Howard Cosell if he thinks he's bigger than sports.  We didn't make him take his job.  Maybe be thought Merriman, Jackson, and AJ would be his ticket out.  I don't know if McCoy is the answer.  He's done some great things, especially on offense.  Rivers was the one who opted for the fade on 2nd down.  But I am just saying that the goalline sequence is inexcusable.  I don't care what they admit publicly, but they were scared to win.  That was too Norvy (or Martyesque) for my tastes.

See that's where we differ.  Does Mathews deserve NOT to get the rock down there?  At this point they should be using him there.  His "role" isn't commensurate with his sins at this point.  Someone else will figure out how to use him but while he's on the roster they'd better get the most out of him that they can.  That seemed to be the plan during the two weeks that led up to that DC disaster.

DC: Dan the Man looked a little tired and not up for a chat.  He posed, signed and laughed when my wife joked he's the reason her Sundays are gone.  You can see Ian Eagle walking away behind us.  I started to mention that we had lost the TN and OAK games with him announcing but hoped the streak would end Sunday.  Obviously I was wrong.  I DO NOT believe that the bullshit calls on the 1 yard line are acceptable or part of growing pains.  If any sane person knew to run down there, I don't see why a head coach with any experience at all can't figure it out.  New JIC to follow

I feel like I did after the fumbled snap in Arrowhead.  Maybe they rebound against Denver (they had Green Bay in the first example), but if they are going to keep giving games away I would rather they lose.  I don't want to hear anyone else say that they figured we were only getting 7 or 8 wins anyway.  This team has played well in some areas but coaching decisions (Accepting the penalty in Oak, running on 3rd and long in TN and constantly getting cute on the goal line) have been a running problem.  Seriously, cut Mathews right now if you aren't going to use him in a spot like Sunday.  You ran him in Jax when you couldn't get a TD and seemed pleased by the results.  I'm talking about McCoy obviously.  I could live with running and failing but not that chickenshit series.

It's not like the butcher chopping off his own fingers, Whit.  It was like him dropping the cleaver and letting the turkey get away.  We didn't even try.  Rivers should not be given two run-pass options only to look panicky on 3rd.  I was at the 18.5 second 7 point Knicks/Pacers debacle and at least Reggie Miller had to hit those shots.  The Bolts totally took the Skins off the hook and I have no faith they won't do something again.

My concern with next week, and not just because I will be in the stands, is that the Skins beat us and not us losing.  That's a nice change from the Norv days.  Griffin can certainly give us trouble if Locker and Pryor did.  I know McCoy knows the formula which we've been calling for so long--balance and smart throws.  But if the Skins can get pressure or stop the run, the formula won't work.  As for the bye week, I won't worry too much about other teams.  If the Bolts can get to 10 wins on their own, unlike the past 3 years, everything else will fall into place.
