My friend's mother, Ilse, was in a Japanese camp during the war, and they narrowly escaped unknown punishment when the soldiers came in the house to search for unauthorized food, but didn't find the bag of rice on top of the cabinet. It was a life or death situation! After the war, she emigrated to Holland, then Salt Lake City, Utah.
