Funny, bored stat looking.. just proving that you can use many sample sizes/singular stats to make crazy claims:
In 2012, R. Soriano and Jamey Wright both pitched 67.2 IP. Jamey Wright's FIP was only 0.07 higher than Soriano's, and his xFIP was .20 lower
@Bob Meripol @Mike minimal; Eli Whiteside got claimed by everybody and George is better

@Mike Petriello Yeah I know, the comparisons aren't great at all and you can twist the samples in many ways given that they'd had crazy stretches. Just fun.. Soriano is obviously better but it's good bait to troll ppl with
@Mike Petriello check this out, same two people but past 2 calendar years: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2012&month=11&season1=2012&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=3731,1100

@Disgruntled Goat @EephusBlue Maybe yeah. It'd suck for Seattle to have to see Upton go to Texas, damn I woulda loved Upton to go to Seattle
2 years ago on I Guess Someone Has To Hit Leadoff, Don’t They?
Woah, Upton rejected a trade to the Mariners :O
Corey Hart spent some time leading off.. only 16 games but I mean I think it's cool to have a slugger type of guy leading off.
@NTAC A bit yeah, but I feel as if he'll have a different role with the Dodgers than what he did previously. I feel as if before, he wasn't a strict LOOGY but just a one inning reliever, and I think he'll be used more often as a LOOGY rather than as a one inning reliever, so we might see different trends for him. The walks are a bit scary but I trust the pitching staff to use him nicely.
2 years ago on Dodgers Add J.P. Howell to Bullpen
@Bob Meripol wait, scratch what I said about 3B... seems as if he is mostly a LFer, but point remains that I think he'd cost a bit considering age and what they feel his upside is.
@Bob Meripol a lot considering he is only 23, regarded pretty highly in the ChiSox organization, and 3B is a position that is thinner than Dee Gordon.
@Deuce @capnsparrow sure, but depth is very important in a bullpen so it's solid given that not many lefties out there available.
2 years ago on 2012 Dodgers in Review #48: RP Kenley Jansen
@capnsparrow @Chris Jackson yeah, I hate to source a guy like that cause a lot of them are fake but he doesn't post reports like that often, and he has yet to be wrong on one.
@capnsparrow Nope but I saw someone on twitter who doesn't go crazy with his reports and has been accurate who said that he was a Dodger for 2.75 mil. That's pretty cool, lefties don't hit off him and there isn't many LOOGYs available.
Wonder if Ned can get us Charlie Furbush from the Mariners even without the big Ethier trade (maybe for one of Harang/Capuano or something). I'd prefer Furbush to Howell, but also know that obviously it's less complicated to try to get Howell
@Mike Petriello Probably an injury no?
"Or maybe he was traded for Stanton!" hehe
@Mike Petriello In response to your tweet about Pederson over Zachary, I don't know if he ever exactly ranked Pederson over Zach but I remember Jason Parks talking as if he had Pederson over Lee.
It seems to me that Pederson is gonna be loved by fans cause reports say he always plays hard and gets the most out of his ability, and fans are going to hate Zach for not being the #1 they thought he'd be (which is unfair cause if he becomes a #3 that is still tremendous value)

@DBrim @EephusBlue I agree with 2, I shouldn't have said it like that. Assumptions make a fat ass out of me. What I should have said, is that I'm simply scared of what Bourn is going to be as a player. Maybe it's personal and I fear speed relient guys, but his K rate, SB rate, and second half scare me so much that I'd rather have Ethier in the lineup everyday.
But I think what is swaying me the absolute most towards being okay with it, if it happens, has nothing to do with Ethier/Bourn but about Kemp. Him in CF is gonna be brutal very soon, if not now, and it sucks to have to go through other means to have to fix that but it might have to.
I disagree about the draft pick. Me and you don't know what the specs are (maybe it's Taijun Walker or maybe it's Logan Bawcom...) but you have to factor in everything you are losing and gaining. If we gain value that far exceeds that of a first round pick, awesome.
And I'm not necessarily worried about the offense, just think pure offense is better with Andre than it is Bourn. I guess less balanced, but Hanley/Adrian/Kemp/Crawford are all coming off weird 2012s, I'd say that Ethier is at least a bit stable (although Bourn probably is also, I say a .730 OPS, 40+ steals, ++ D is what happens but who knows in a sport where Scutaro hits like Bonds sometimes ugh I'm getting sad now)
@EephusBlue (Third post sorry). The biggest problem I have isn't really that we are losing Andre, it's more about Bourn. I felt even before this that someone is going to overpay for him. 76% stolen base rate (which dipped from the past 3 years), fewest SBs in 2012 than he had since 2008, 22 % K rate (which is rising the past three years), and a .636 OPS in the second half.
Extremely elite on defense, which is awesome. But I'd be scared the offensive production goes down and our offense suffers from it mightily, whereas Andre's goes down slower and he continues to outproduce him on offense alone.
@EephusBlue I think part of it is a case of shiny new toy. Bourn seems like he fits this team perfect cause he's fast, plays good CF Defense, and can leadoff. Andre has been a Dodger forever and has done the same thing year in and year out so it becomes a bit boring and annoying that he can't fix his flaw. But from an outside point of view you have to see that Andre is just better offensively, and I'd go for an average defense and damn good offense.
@EephusBlue It won't be a good thing. Not for Bourn. Bourn strikes out 22% of the time, gets on base at a decent, but not elite, clip of .348 or so, and in the second half last year he had a .636 OPS. That's scary. He has bad contract written all over him. Also, the fear with Andre is that he is going to decline soon? I'd fear the same with Bourn who is only 8 months younger and his whole game revolves around speed which can go much sooner.
Our pure offense is better with Ethier than it is with Bourn, and it'd say that that's much more important than defense (which was good enough last year to have a top rotation and will arguably improve with Crawford replacing Juan Van Sands)
Andre has his liabilities, but 70% of the time he is the best hitter in our lineup, top 7 in baseball.
I also don't think a trade will replenish the farm that much. You lose the draft pick, and so anything other than first round pick value isn't going to be substantial.
I mean, we don't know a lot about it. The prospects and money for Bourn is a huge variable in this. And I have no problem trading Andre for some specs, if the replacement in 2013 is great. And I also really agree we need Kemp in RF cause he sucks in CF. But I don't think that in 2013 switching Andre for Bourn makes good sense. It for sure makes our defense substantially better but I think our offense is going to take a big hit with that, especially versus righties which is very important. I think Andre is fucking perfect for our offense right now, he is our best weapon vs. righties and we have enough hitters where we can now hide him deep in the lineup or on the bench vs. lefties, which is something we couldn't do when it was only Kemp and Andre who could hit baseballs.
@Amy Wong, Ph.D. Candidate What I see is that Andre Ethier is our best hitter vs. RHP, and that means that roughly 70% of the time, he is our best hitter. The other 30%, he is one of our worst, but still. Overall, he is a much better hitter than Bourne.
The thing to me is, do I want much better defense or much better offense for 2013? I say offense. Our defense will be fine: It was last year and will arguably improve unless Hanley is worse than Dee Gordon and Crawford is worse than Juan Rivera.
If it's a personal preference that you like your teams based on speed and defense than well I can't do anything to change your mind. But I'd like the Dodgers to be more about power and overall better hitting with average defense rather than one speed guy, good D, and worse hitting. I'd rather have the 2010 Rangers than the 2010 Mariners is all I'm saying.
2 years ago on The Dodger Offseason Isn’t Close To Being Over
@efb I don't want it either. Replacing Ethier with Bourn makes our 2013 offense significantly worse with a good chance that the prospects to offset that aren't worth it. Sure, the OF defense gets better but like I already said: Our pitching was damn good last year with a similar, and arguably worse, 2012 defense. Bourn has his speed but isn't the fear of Andre that his hitting will go away cause of age? Well, Bourn is only 8 months younger and relies on speed which can easily leave him early as well.
Just don't like it
@KirkDavenport @efb I disagree that the pitching will need that. The pitching was a top staff with the same ppl in CF and RF and Juan Rivera in Left Field.
@Mike Petriello I hope Anibal goes to a team different than the Tigers AND Cubs so Nightengale and Morosi can both be sad

@The_Real_Paul What Econ are you taking? Just took my econ final the other day. One of the questions was about "Tom Haverford buying fine leather goods" (If you watch Parks and Rec, you'll understand...)
@darknesssss I was gonna say yeah, but we have Ryu now to make up for someone on our team that is large. And as far as being overpaid, theres now several overpaid players. Maybe that's why Ned is doing this, making sure we still have that scapegoat so we won't be sad when he DFAs Uribe
Mike, I get your point about Ely, but isn't it realistically possible by May he is kinda needed as higher on that depth chart? He is way low on the depth chart but you'd have to bet at least two starters go, making him 8th on a depth chart with a chance of two of those starters (Lilly/Bills) serious injury risks.
Not saying Ely is any good and that he is vital to the team, but it makes some sense why they might wanna hold onto him.
Hahaha well I got that off my chest, seems like you guys have the same mindset I do towards Ethier. Just annoying that any time you read anything about Ethier on twitter it's about him vs. lefties 90% of the time.
2 years, 1 month ago on Sources: Dodgers to Acquire Skip Schumaker for Jake Lemmerman
I have a mini rant. I know Ethier is overpaid blah blah, but I absolutely hate how people take an anti-fan stance with him because of his flaw. Do people not realize he is clearly the best hitter on the Dodgers vs. RHP? Without a doubt. And besides that, top 7 in ALL MLB vs. Righties. That is fucking incredible. But people find it so easy to hate on him so incredibly much cause to be honest: some fans, who ironically bash biased narratives, just love hating on people on narratives.
I'm not really saying anyone here does that, cause I mean I've barely started posting here recently. Just what I've seen on twitter a lot or read from some other writers.
Pretty cool ripple effect (in my estimation) from this AZ trade: Upton won't be a Ranger, so Hamilton kinda has to no? I'd say odds are for it, and if yes, than that's cool since makes the chances of the Angels being in the playoffs lower AND it would mean the Phillies don't have Hamilton (Hamilton has question marks, but I'd still be scared of him being a Philly)
2 years, 1 month ago on Zack Greinke Can Opt Out, and That’s a Good Thing
@The_Real_Paul Idk. Regardless it's bad for the DBacks, cause even if Bauer amounts to little, they spent a great asset in a #3 pick on him, not too long ago. I don't think Didi amounts to much, ever. I mean, lots of reports have good things to say about Bauer but it makes you wonder why a team was so willing to give up a high profile guy like him so quickly, for a meh SS

2 years, 1 month ago on Hyun-jin Ryu Beats Deadline To Add To Embarrassment of Dodger Pitching Riches
@LakerDodger24 @EephusBlue I'm fine with it to, just wonder what that last bench spot will go to. I'd say definitely a righty but wonder if they'll focus on someone who can play 3B or someone who can play COF (regardless I'd assume it's someone that for sure can play 1B since we don't really have a backup 1b)
@EephusBlue I think he's a very solid fit, especially if he is so in love with McGwire. Him hitting righties well will be cool.
The only thing I'm confused about is what the other bench piece would be after him. If the Dodgers got Skip, it's Hairston/Punto/Skip/FedEx/?. The Dodgers have been looking for someone for the left side of the infield and someone who can play 1B. 3b/1B kinda guy, seems like Youk is the only logical fit. Or do they want a Corner OFr who mashes lefties? I think that's a better fit.
Punto kinda fuckin ruins everything since he plays 2b/3B (not SS anymore I don't believe, well actually he could probably play it better than HanRam) but his only asset is being great defensively, but he mostly does so at a position (2B) were we have great defense already.
