@ginidietrich  That might work too. I made a mistake and accidentally deleted the note from the person who said I shouldn't have said I got a cellphone from Steve Jobs' ghost because it was wrong.

Wish I hadn't dumped everything because that would have generated an entire blog post in response.

@Gina1 I didn't have this thick skin at that age either. Took a long time to get to  this place and I'd be lying if I said nothing gets through now.

The more I talk to my son the more I think at least one of these girls is doing it because she likes him. He keeps squirming so I think he might really find them interesting too.  But the boys, well that is different and I do wish I could eyeball them face to face.

Probably wouldn't help my kid, but I like the idea. :)

Your kids are still really little so I wouldn't stress out too much about it. Just talk to them about their day and make it clear dad likes learning about their day.

When mine were younger I would tease them and say I heard the teacher read a grown up book to them. They would always say no and tell me what book they really heard/read. I did that with a bunch of stuff but eventually they caught on.

Now it is harder, they are in 5th and 8th grade so they are better about telling me what they think I need to know and censoring the other stuff but they know we like hearing about their lives so they share things.

It is just an ongoing effort to make sure they understand that technology might have changed but people are the same as when I was their age.

@kenyagjohnson Hi Kenya, long time no speak. It it is easy to get caught in that place where we get lost in those thoughts. It has happened to me multiple times and I expect it will again.

Sometimes I get emails from people who don't have kids and ask me to write about parenting. Sometimes I get notes from people who weren't in fraternities and ask me to write about that. I think the point is we forget how the ordinary in our lives is sometimes exotic to others.

And we forget sometimes how the ordinary also lends itself to building relationships with other people. Write about an argument with a spouse, heartbreak, death or just making a meal and others will smile and or cry with you because we all do it.

I know for me when I just write without those other thoughts it tends to be more raw and more authentic and I think that helps people respond.

@Lewis LaLanne aka Nerd #2 The two most important parts of becoming a better writer are lots of reading and lots of writing.

Brevity is useful but sometimes people kill a good piece by adhering to guidelines and not rules.

Some posts do better when they are longer. People will always read good content.

@Lardavbern  I don't disagree with that. What grinds on my nerves are the number of people who don't have any business sense at all. When someone tells you that you are going to get great exposure by writing for them you need to do more than just accept their answer.

Or the people who put in 40 hours for a $10 gift card, it just makes no sense.

The greatest headline is worthless if it is attached to weak content. It is like going to the biggest sale of the year at a brick and mortar and discovering they sell useless junk.

People read the long back story and people read posts with obscure headlines too. Headlines are overrated. People spend too much time writing them and not enough on the post which is why so many bloggers have horrible bounce rates.

@Chloe Jeffreys

Hi Chloe,

I am lucky to have some really good friends, several who I have known since grade school so I can say support exists. If I need to chew on someone’s ear or ask for advice it is definitely available. The bigger question isn’t does support exist, but will we ask for it when we need it.

The guys and I learned the hard way about how we have been socialized. It is not easy to ask for help or admit you need it, especially when you are not talking about something like substance abuse.

If it is about what you do when you have been laid off and are trying to find work you don’t always know what to say. You don’t complain because that doesn’t help, you just work as hard as you can to find work because fathers support their families.

That is the model we grew up with and if you can’t support your family because you are out of work it eats away at you.

Many men won’t talk about that piece, for a variety of reasons. Anyway, I think we are all figuring out that no one has the answers and that much of this is just learning what works for us as people.
