The worst part of the Bargs/Novak "upgrade' was that we'd never consider playing Novak at center. Bargs isn't any better suited for the position, but will evidently start.

Aldrich doesn't seem to have much of a motor in the (very) limited minutes i have noticed him. i'd far prefer an undersized energy guy like Lou Amundson, someone that can run the floor with our multiple three guard lineups.

Making an offer to Earl Barron may also make sense, if for no other reason than to see if he can continue his statistically improbable output from past games in the orange and blue.

Chris Smith has to go NOW, while J.R. is marginalized and penitent on the sidelines. It will be more difficult to do it later.

i thought J.R. competed at a very high and sustained level last year at the defensive end. Not sure he was effective, or even a "plus" defender for his position, but the focus and energy were consistently pretty good. His brother should get a couple of minutes of burn in a Knicks uni so they can waive him already for Lou Amundson or perpetual tease Earl Barron (who really should have played college ball at Duke).

Chris gets a big boy paycheck and his name in the official record books as "former NBA player", the Knicks get better roster balance.

As for Andy, he should be strictly limited to being our 3rd string power forward. He simply cannot perform as a center or a small forward - neither can Amare. Amazing how we have $50M invested in that one position.

i would keep Ray in the lockerroom - if Beno & Pablo cannot handle Nate Wolters, then this season is over already anyway.

did Ray Ray shake off Melo on the second play of the season? Loved his energy to start the season, thought he did a nice job fighting through screens to keep up with Mayo.

Not feeling Woodson's approach to Shumpert. JR had a terrible summer, not sure we had to waste a roster spot on his kid brother in addition to ignoring his drug suspension, tardy knee surgery and overly lavish contract extension. Now we have to bench our budding homegrown superstar as well? Or play Iman out of position at the 3? Sheesh.

What's wrong with Shump Shump starting and getting 30 minutes a night as our starting SG?

46-36 is my prediction, along with a first round exit.

I think we have a very traditional depth chart that is NOT well suited to playing out of position. We go 2 deep at every position with legit NBA rotation players - 3 deep at PG. That's practically Knee-Deep!

I'd start Shump & Melo at the 2/3 spots and assume that they can be just as good a pair of wings on both ends of the floor as any starting tandem in the NBA. Iman is ready to bust out - I see little value in playing him out of position against bigger small forwards, where he is forced to gamble rather than use his athleticism to make plays defensively.

I'd play Andy & Amare 40mpg combined at Power Forward and demand that they give maximum defensive effort in limited minutes...loudly, publicly, and often. i'd also circle a half dozen games on the schedule and plan to Popovich key guys on those nights.

i'd limit Tyson, Ray & Shump to 30mpg as much as possible to preserve their health, and allow them to play more aggressively w/r/t managing fouls and energy levels.

i'd send Toure Murry & THJR down to DLeague when JR comes back.

Cannot believe we kept Aldrich and Chris Smith instead of Ike Diogu, Lou Amundson, or Jeremy Tyler's 2-year partially guaranteed contract.

@Peaceman that's the sage, veteran hand of Mr. Big Shot at the point, making sure the offense runs smoothly. Actually, he's been pretty turrible, almost like he WANTS the Knicks to eat that $4M buyout next seasona and let him walk away back to Denver...

Agreed O&B - we know that we have five bigs in the rotation, but we need someone to step up and become the sixth big to do the grunt work in the paint.

We have three candidates for the job: Shelden "5-Head" WIlliams, "Taz" Balkman and the disgruntled Derrick Brown. Who's your pick to channel some old school Oakley?

Yeah, it's all bullshit & posturing. There's actually several problems at play:

1) STAT & Melo don't want a Thibodeau screaming at them, they feel entitled as superstars to do their thing as they see fit...if they turn it up in the playoffs, all is forgiven, right?

2) D'Antoni is seriously NOT very versed in coaching more than basic defensive concepts, which is why he speaks in more code than Steady

3) Even if Red Holtzmann rose from the grave & commanded Phil and JVG to join as assistants, this squad would still suck defensively due to talent and physical shortcomings at that end of the floor

4) Finally, if this team were to fully commit - coaches and players - to being the best defensive team RIGHT NOW that they could be, they'd still be nowhere near the Knicks of the mid-90s (partially due to rule changes), and there are some fans who refuse to accept that reality and will never ever shift out of gripe mode

"We're all frustrated," D'Antoni said. "We have to get better defensively. We're going to be a good offensive team. It's the hurdle we have to get over. It's going to be the mark if we're going to be a good team or not. Our major concern is can we be good defensively, and we'll see. We're going to work at it." But wait - i thought D'Antoni NEVER talked about defense, or wanted to work on defense? Are these the End Times that Christians have been claiming are upon us for the past couple of thousand years???? Is @Sniggah really African in disguise???? Should i really be drinking Guinness at lunchtime????

@Orange_and_Blue @Lives C'mon - Moz is not built for 2011-2012 success, his hands make Roberto Duran look like a surgeon. We HAD to lose Wilson anyway at the end of this season to afford to sign Melo (or another FA) outright, so HE's not a consideration. Felton & Billups have differing strengths & weaknesses but similar contract lengths, and i consider THAT a wash.

Now if you wanna say that longterm, Gallo at an $8M/per level is more strategically sound than Melo at the MAX for our ability to compete for a chip, there's an argument to be had that might sway me. Just Bloguin.

@Lives No way Stat OR Melo divorce from D'Antoni - he's their kind of stooge. Always positive, never too demanding or critical, and will always shield them and deflect any persistent criticism towards less empowered players

LOL O&B....well Amare shows a pulse on the defensive side from time to time, not on-ball stuff (god forbid!) but as a weakside shotblocker. Melo goes largely for the ZBo approach (I'ma outproduce my man, how 'bout you?)

If they turn up the intensity in the playoffs, all is forgiven. If they don't? We lose in three or four games and start ponderin' some serious structural shakeups...i guess that'd start with dumping/trading/restructuring Chauncey.

second place goes to.....Shelden Williams (and his indomitable fivehead). i just think he can help us on the boards, and possibly he can be bullied / threatened / cajoled into a slow jog at times in order to keep up with the painfully arthritic SSOL (as practiced by thirtysomething points Billups & AC).

Balkman has lost some explosiveness and shows little interest in doing anything besides popping treys & playing to the crowd. What a shame!

Brown has some talent, but it's not fair to put him in as a 5. i like him as a backup "4" for when Amare suffers first-half foul trouble - a narrow role, but one i think he could thrive in as our 13th man, if you will.

turrible loss. turrible. all this footsying around with Mason & Billy Walker is muddying the real issue: who's our 10th man?

We know the rotation at this point. We know our forwards are TWOMAX & Extra "E". We know our so-called centers are Mr. "T" & Jared. i think our best guard rotation is Billups / Fields / TD / Carter. That's our natural nine-man rotation, and it is just not very consistent.

We need a tenth man who can provide the rebounding and defensive intensity we lack when STAT & Melo decide to half-step.

It's not Walker, MDA's 11th man who has become the signal for "we need instant offense NOW" by Mr. Pringle. Walker's presence on the court usually means DDD and a stagnant offense. He plays no "D" and has little midrange game or passing ability.

It's not Mason, who'd be MY 11th man over Walker. Mase is our 12th man & is really just injury insurance at this point, and the classy thing would've been to waive him at the deadline if he cannot beat out Fields, Douglass OR Walker for burn at this point in his career.

It's not Andy Rautins, who is a delightful 15th man - perhaps the textbook definition of a good 15th man (alma mater connection w/ star, clean cut, eloquent style on community outreach efforts, stays in shape & claps well during game, bonds with other rookie who actually plays, etc.)

There are three candidates left for tenth man: Shelden Williams, Renaldo Balkman and Derrick Brown. i'd love to see a poll of the Fanatics asking which of these guys you'd play, given that their de-facto contributions will be as a backup 5, not a 4 or 3. Option #4 could be playing a 3-guard offense....my vote would be for Option #5......

Patrick Ewing, Jr. (who just won NBDL Player of the Week)

1) Best defensive big is Jeffries. MDA ain't playin' him for his rebounding. Second best is Turiaf (when healthy). Third best is......(gulp) Herb Williams?

2) Steady is more right than wrong on this issue, MDA should do a lot more raging, calling TO's and dare i say, coaching defense than he already does. But to say he that he doesn't do any of those things at all is a falsehood & a needless exaggeration.

A strong team defensive climate MUST be instilled by the players first, or it will fail. It can be reinforced by the coach, who can use practices and changing substitution patterns to tweak performance. Frankly, i'd love to see Mike lose his shit & get thrown out of a game for once. i guess that isn't his style as a "player's coach". =(
