Great post. I don't really care anymore about being just a marketing person because I think to define what I do as a communicator as only marketing doesn't really describe it.

You're right - customers don't really care about the difference and to reach customers do you need to have an understanding of marketing, PR and communications to reach customers. Plus, in the era of shrunk budgets and constrained resources, most companies can't really afford to have their budget spread across each silo, it has to be here's X dollars, make it happen.

Well I think that you have first define spam, which I personally define as any promotional email that's sent without my consent so it's pretty simple for me in that I ask myself "Did I ask for this email?". If the answer is no, then it's spam.

I think the problems are that the tools haven't evolved fast enough to help me manage it the way I want to and help filter out the noise efficiently.

I do think it's just becoming more micro - meaning that it is better for smaller groups of followers, smaller lists and smaller interactions. I get the most use out of using it with people in my local network and to find out cool things locally.

I have always felt these tools severely lacking, but that's simply because measuring influence in social media is like trying to measure somebody's influence in real life.

@sydcon_mktg Oops fired off a bit early as this one about the retweeting got me all fired up. I hate this as well but to add to it, I hate people that use constant retweet when they should should be @replying. They so desperately want everyone in their feed to see their crap... like they get a compliment and they retweet it.. please..
