I'm okay with re-signing him as long as it's not a huge commitment (i.e. big money, 5+ years). He's more valuable in a trade with a contract anyway, rather than being a rental. If Murray can get some movement flexibility on the contract, it gives him options down the road.

I *hope* this is just another example of Melnyk changing his tune to suit his audience/end goal, which has become somewhat pathological and painfully transparent. He says the team is profitable if he's trying to come off as a stable owner; it's haemorrhaging money if he wants some sort of government concession in his favour. I hope he's playing poor to get his casino and that's it. What I hope it's not, is him using the windfall not to improve the team but to prop up other ventures/pay off personal debts.

Dude. This is a three-month-old blog post about a hockey game. What a weird venue to vent your personal frustration with the way we honour our colonial heritage, especially considering the first comment was actually pretty tame. I don't mean to pick on you, but doesn't this argument seem a tad out of place?

@Chrislennon_GOA @punk_fiction I feel like a 3-month-old post just got hijacked by some trolling Canadian truther.
@lukus2005 Disagree. Not a chance do you trade Anderson and go with 2 inexperienced netminders. He's still the undisputed #1 until Lehner's play forces their hand.

@77Sens @Mothballsuitor Hmmm... then I guess the question is why Ottawa's numbers come out so differently than Edmonton's or Calgary's. I get that maybe there's possibly more money and a bigger corporate presence in the Alberta cities, but I wouldn't expect it to be so drastic. Edmonton's average price is almost double (!), for a team that hasn't made the playoffs in years. Presumably those teams are also maximizing revenue by finding the sweet spot for ticket prices. Is fan interest in Ottawa really that different from Edmonton or Calgary?
1 year, 4 months ago on Melnyk Hires PR Firm Called 'ESPN' to Perform Study on Pro Sports Franchises
What I found interesting was Ottawa's ticket pricing relative to every other Canadian market (full data here: http://www.fancostexperience.com/pages/fcx/blog_pdfs/entry0000020_pdf001.pdf). It's not just below every other Canadian NHL franchise, it's WAY LOWER. Like, the next lowest is Calgary and average ticket prices there are 43% higher.
I can't help feel there's something incongruous about an owner crying poor and pushing hard for a casino as a second revenue source, when a modest ticket price hike (say, 10%, so we'd still be the lowest-priced Canadian ticket in the league) would do the same.
If they have to close the roof and still call it an outdoor game, does that mean Tampa Bay's Thunderdome era were all outdoor games?
I would LOVE to see a white version of the current heritage sweater trotted out. That would be incredible.

@Nichols6thSens Interesting that 24-28 year-olds corresponds roughly with the Muckler draft years. More confirmation that he was terrible, as if we needed it.
1 year, 8 months ago on Post Mortem: The 2013 Ottawa Senators Season
Nice point about the career trajectories. It's as if the team's missing a bulk of players in the 24-28 age range that could replace the leadership core, which is over 30 for the most part. Instead, we have the vets and the kids. So, do you trade some kids to get some established players, or let them develop and waste your veterans' final years?
I like the concept of the award, but you're right, evaluating over the course of a single season is inherently flawed. What would be more fair would be to allow all transactions up to 5 years earlier as fodder for consideration. GMs 1-2 years in would have to share the award with the GM who preceded them, a la Jennings trophy. Like, if you wanted to give it to Nonis for the year the Leafs had, he had to share it with Burke for building the team.
I think the way they do it just rewards teams that make a splash, either in free agency or in a trade in a given year. Think of all the D-minuses the Sens got in offseason reviews for their lack of pursuit of free agents.

Hilarious dig on Mendes at the end of the clip! I just hope he doesn't re-aggravate the injury by coming back so soon. Personally, I'd rather him just sit out this season and get the strength back up so he can be the World's Best Karlsson next season.

Just curious: with all these possession-based statistics out there, I haven't seen one that tracks literal possession of the puck; they all seem to infer possession through shots/chances taken/against while on ice. How about coming up with a figure like TOI, except TOP (time of possession), to track how often a particular player or team has the puck during a game? I don't see why that would be harder to track than TOI is. It might yield even more useful information, especially if broken down by zone and combined with the shots/chances data.

A bit of an overreaction, no? Why do they "need" a guy to play 3 minutes and fight every night?

Obviously you've never seen the Outlet Malls -- missing out!Actually it appears Norfolk swapped affiliations in the offseason. They were Tampa's farm team last year, and now they're Anaheim's. The Lighning subsequently got Syracuse to replace them this year. So Syracuse has most of last year's Norfolk's roster, when they won the Cup. Mystery solved.
Incidentally, how do AHL franchises maintain any fan loyalty whatsoever when that happens? Imagine, one day the entire Sens roster gets swapped out for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Many more years of Foligno...

Why do people keep referring to Syracuse as the defending Calder Cup champs? Wasn't it Norfolk last year?
Great post, BTW.
Just wanted to say that pic is hilarious. It's Murray's semi-concerned expression and formal attire, combined with that drunk-scrawl cartoon pink phone coming at him... just too funny.

Yeah, this is a pretty shameless way for a company to piggyback off Alfie's popularity to boost sales for their lame development. It's not like they've been able to show restraint from self-promotion in naming streets in the past. Wanna meet me at the corner of Rahul Crescent and Kochar Drive to prove my point?

Depending on the cost, of course, I don't know why the Sens wouldn't consider a move bringing Ryan in. I disagree that they'd "empty the coffers for a three-year window"; the kid's 25, with probably 7 good years left in his prime (assuming they can sign him to an extension). It's no guarantee that any of Ottawa's prospects will turn into the 30-goal scorer Ryan already is. I think sometimes we forget that there's a decent chance that some of our prospects (Lehner, Silfverberg, Stone, ZBad) are already at their peak values based on the promise of what they might deliver down the line. They could be busts or end up as serviceable 3rd-liners. They could also be superstars. The jury's still out. I think we'd be really happy if one of those forwards eventually turned out as good as Ryan, though. So isn't this a quantity-for-quality move in the vein of what you're always hoping for?

@Wham_City Good point, although that whole paragraph is cryptic. Which GM? Tallon? Bowman? What player and what rumours? Maybe when Elliotte said "sources", he meant they needed more specifics, and he wasn't willing to divulge them.

I'd likely go with the Blackhawks employing private investigators to spy on players a few seasons ago. Can't imagine they'd want that public knowledge.

Good stuff. I can't see MacLean giving two shits about Kuba's trade value; I think he plays him with Karlsson because they've been a good pairing in the past.Interesting that Rundblad was scratched. Indeed, I think Phoenix's depth on D (especially young D) is pretty strong. I wonder, will this mean yet another move for Rundblad within the next year? It seems he's good enough to be desirable as a trade chip, but not yet good enough for an NHL lineup. I hope for his sake that he spends the rest of the year in the AHL rather than the press box.

@Brochenski Hilarious. More specifically, I was just wondering there was a previous post that explained how the scoring chances are calculated (i.e. are they "shots attempted while in the green zone outlined in the rink image?"), and what the coloured columns mean (I'm guessing chances created/given up while on ice?).

Good luck in Toronto, Tim! I agree with you re: the jerseys. The early 90's ones were a bit cheesy, but still the best of a bad lot. So we manage a lame-duck winning streak, if you can call it that, and all of a sudden we're back to the "one-year turnaround" and "minor tweaks" Melnyk-Murray soundbites. Fuck, what does it take for a major rebuild? And how is Murray so far down Melnyk's pants?

@TrevorKluke @Nichols6thSens Do we know for sure that this draft is a strong one? I've heard conflicting reports. Have either of you guys read anything to indicate this? If it's not, then having several picks in the first 2-3 rounds isn't going to do much for us.
3 years, 10 months ago on March Madness -- Prospect Porn, One Last Thought on Phillips and Injuries
When it comes to this Phillips signing, I think there are really two questions: 1) Does it matter if we have Phillips for the next three years? and 2) Could we have gotten better value out of trading him?
As for the first question, I would say, by and large, that it doesn't. We aren't going to be competitive and we aren't going to spend to the salary cap. So his salary really doesn't impede us from adding free agents, or signing other players. As long as he's a professional and a decent player, he'll be a good role model for the young defencemen coming in. If his play deteriorates, he'll sit in the press box, be sent to the minors or retire.
As for the second question, that's an unknown. I have to think that if Murray was able to pry a first-rounder from anyone for Phillips, he would be gone. If was able to trade him for a second-rounder, you're talking about a mixed bag of potential, and one could easily argue that having Phillips in the lineup for three years is more likely to have a positive impact than whomever they might have drafted.
