Commuter bikes get stolen. I'm not spending $2400 on a commuter bike.

Is low-quality high-tensile steel the norm for these kinds of bicycles?

The problem they have is that they are a low budget operation with many participants coming from local low-income neighborhoods. They had been on good terms with the police in the past because they provide a positive activity for kids that don't have many other recreational opportunities. If they have to start paying 6 figure fees for permits and insurance, they will have to start charging $200 entry fees that are prohibitive to many of their members. Groups like this need to be encouraged, not shut down.

PS - I think the "ebikes are for lazy people" reflects their novelty status. Most Americans, including most American bicyclists, think of bicycles as recreational machines. In that sense, ebikes are for lazy people. Other parts of the world consider bicycles to be vehicles for commuters, so those people are replacing car trips with ebike trips, not replacing recreational bicycle rides with ebike rides.

EBikes, and bicycles in general, are a lot more popular in Europe because gas prices are much higher there, bike lanes/bike paths are much more common, and auto speed limits are low in residential and urban areas. I don't see ebikes being more than a novelty in the USA unless some of those obstacles change over here. Novelty = less than 1% of commuter trips in most major US cities.
Never enter private information (credit card numbers, passwords, etc) on public computers in hotels or internet cafes. Crooks commonly install key loggers on these computers that record everything you type.
If you are connecting your own laptop, tablet, or smartphone to a public WiFi (including hotels and cafes), use only encrypted web sites and encrypted apps. Verify that your apps are encrypting your data before you leave home. Hacking unencrypted public WiFi signals is very easy.

It may be fun to ride, but only for an hour at a time. Once the battery dies, you're stuck with a 50 pound bicycle, which is not going to be fun to ride. Electric bikes are great for commuting, but the $6000 price tag is going to turn off most people unless you tend to sell your car to buy it.

Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 do not support OTG out of the box either, but you can get it with StickMount.
OTG is useful for mounting a USB flash driver or USB card reader to your Android device (e.g. downloading photos from your SLR camera).

Love StickMount. But (1) why doesn't Android do this by default and (2) why doesn't Android let you do this without rooting?

I agree. Too much yacking by Danno. Let the other characters have bigger roles.
