@Hasheem Thabinks : You forgot to mention Holiday (all-star player) and Lawson. This year's draft definitely has talent - just not a lot of all-star caliber players.
@kfmsooner : Presti can force his hand by not resigning Martin and amnestying Perkins. He'd have little choice but to play Lamb and whatever center we draft (hopefully it's a center).
@DXL : True, but McCollum is likely to be draft prior to the 12th pick and Adams would an upgrade to our weakest position.
@Perk-Punt : I wouldn’t trade up unless Len was still on the board at that time.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think that you can combine trade exceptions. Getting Vince as part of the deal would be awesome, but I doubt Dallas includes him.
@Perk-Punt: It’s not likely that Cuban would allow the Mavs to be that lousy when he owes OKC an unprotected pick. I’d rather have the 13th pick now. I’d use the 12th pick and either the 29th pick and/or Perry Jones III to trade with the Kings for the 7th pick in order to nab Len.The Kings would likely be willing to do that unless Burke falls to them because their other likely target would be Carter-Williams who should be there at 12 unless Detroit takes him at 8. Then I ‘d use the 13th pick to select Adams. With Len and Adams in fold, I’d like our chances against any team.
Make this happen:
Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News: Because of their clear intentions of making a huge run at Dwight Howard, the Mavericks will have to consider all options when it comes to assets on their roster. That includes the possibility of trading their draft pick to save the roughly $1.7 million that the pick counts against the salary cap. Doesn’t mean they will trade it. But they have to clear a few more million to make sure that they can offer Howard the maximum contract allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. It would be painful to give up the pick, but there’s a way the Mavericks could do it with a minimal amount of hurt. They owe the Oklahoma City Thunder a first-round pick before 2018. That pick is protected through the first 20 picks of the draft. But if the Mavericks don’t convey it by 2017, the Thunder gets the pick no matter when it is in the 2018 draft. The Mavericks are drafting 13th this year, which means it won’t go to OKC. But what if they went to the Thunder and said, we’ll give you that pick to complete the roundabout set of trades that ended up giving Oklahoma City the Mavericks’ pick (it went through the Lakers and Rockets). The Mavericks could get back a future second rounder and maybe a spare part off the OKC roster like the expiring contract of Ronnie Brewer. What comes back in return isn’t important. The key is the Mavericks would have satisfied that trade requirement by shipping the pick to OKC, wouldn’t be taking back any salary for this season and therefore would clear a nice hunk of cash to apply toward Howard’s salary.
@OLADIPO: They could also draft an international player that plans on staying overseas for another year (possibly schroeder or Saric) and not have it count against their cap this year. Or they could make a trade with Cleveland for their two early 2nd picks in this year's draft.
@OLADIPO Not a bad idea. I would do it if we could move up high enough to get Len using our 12th pick and some combination of PJ III, the 29th and the 32nd pick. Then take Adams with the 13th pick. The center issue should be solved at that point assuming Brooks isn't stubborn enough to continue to Perkins ...
@Royce Young: I disagree. I believe that most of them would be an upgrade over Perk and both Len and Adams have the potential to be huge difference makers against Memphis and Miami.
@KD4theWin Yep, he's my choice for either our first round pick or the Charlotte pick we own.
@KD4theWin Those are my choices as well. I'm really hoping we get either one.
@okcjim: I'd love for us to draft Len or Adams. Both will likely be gone though because Portland is looking to draft a defensive minded center.
@tygablood: Either he's overpaid with us or he's overpaid with another team. There's no way he doesn't get at least what Presti extended him for in the open market if he was a free agent.
@TheresABabyFaceUnderMyBeard : I follow UCLA and he wasn't all that impressive. Nice stroke from deep, but he overall game wasn't anything to get excited about. I'd rather take someone else with the 12th pick and try to get Bullock with the 29th pick if he's available.
@Ibaka's Jumpshot: Good to know that you can throw stuff on the court to distract a shooter and only receive a technical foul for it. Teams might "accidently" throw stuff on the court to try to distract the shooter on the game winning shot at the end of the game then.
