The NCAAlooks like either like a group of morons or that they are on the take. A half-game penalty is laughable. If they have nothing, leave the kid alone. If he is guilty, make the penalty painful. Sometimes the NCAA appears to be a bunch of clowns trying to run a circus.

While I personally enjoy Spurrier's digs and sound bites,I don't think coaches trash talking would be a good thing. The trash talking itself would likely be entertaining for most fans but we simply have too many redneck fans that would take things to the next level. The fan emotions run high as it is which results in some pretty bad behavior. I think that if the coaches get into the trash talking game, it will stir the pot enough to incite even more fans into doing something stupid. And I do believe that some fans take on the personality of the coach..

Hunter undoubtably has NFL talent but I don't think he completely recovered from last season's knee injury. From the outside looking in, he appeared to have recovered more physically than mentally. I don't recall him shying away from contact like he seemed to do this year on some occasions. Even with a season somewhat better than this one, I doubt that another year at UT would improve his draft position all that much, if any at all. For selfish reasons I would like to see him return but, if I were in his shoes, I would probably move on as well. I wish him much success in the NFL.

Everyone in Tennessee is a great AD and an even better Head Coach. Most of those making fools of themselves likely didn't even know who Butch Jones was, where he coached or what his track record was because they only watch a few SEC games each year. The only thing a lot of these big-mouths know about football is that they were never very good at playing it. A lot of the more vocal fans wear orange-tinted glasses and think every coach in the nation should beg to come here. They just don't realize that there are many other attractive programs and that you are not always successful at luring coaches away from a successful situation, especially when the money is relatively the same and fans have realistic expectations. I don't think Butch Jones was anyone's first choice but he seemed to be the only coach campaining to come and attempt to get us out of the sewer we are drowning in. Jones has won where ever he has been, is fiery on the sidelines and, by all indications, runs a tight ship. We at least should get behing him and give him a chance. Considering that the football program is in shambles, the Athletic Department is broke and the unrealistic expectations of many of the fans, I believe Jones was about as good as we could have realistically hope for. When all things are considered, I'm not sure we deserve Butch Jones.

After typing this, I am going to fumigate my keyboard and sterilize my hands but I think the best thing for our football program at this point is for us to swallow our pride and dignity and hire Petrino. At least we would have a proven coach and he would not fit into our budget. He has no bargaining power so he would likely agree to any morals clause put in front of him. Make the base pay low and incentive laden with no buyout clause. Once we get over the initial stiench, it would probably be okay.

Of Strong or Gundy, I think Strong would be the better choice for UT considering his defensive background and his name being more recognizable in the Florida area. Gundy offers more from the offensive side but in the SEC, defense wins championships. I just hope we don't fool around waiting on Gundy to make a decision and have him leave us standing at the altar while Strong gets PO'd by appearing to be the fall-back choice. I remember us losing Kevin Stallings as basketball coach in this fashion when we decided we might have a chance at Tim Floyd. Stallings has had a successful carreer at Vandy while Floyd got USC on probation and we had to endure the Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson eras before we finally hired a decent coach. I believe Gundy is just using this as a way to fortify his status at OSU and make a few dollars in the process.

During coaching searches, speculation is part of the fun. I enjoy reading other articles, substantiated or not.  At this time of year, with all of the cloak and dagger interviews, you have to take every article and report with a grain of salt, regardless of where they come from. I just don't see Chavis being named as HC at UT at this point in time for a couple of reasons. First. if the hire fails to pan out, Hart, who is already unpopular with a lot of fans, would likely never recover. So, I think Hart will go with a proven commodity instead of a DC with no HC experience. Secondly, Chavis would not be a popular choice with a majority of UT fans. After the last two coaching debacles, UT fans also want a big name coach with a proven record. However, because he is a UT grad and an ex-assistant, I think Chief would be the only person with no head coaching experience that Hart could hire and avoid being tarred and feathered and ran out of Knoxville on a rail.  I would love to see Chief get a chance at being a HC if that is what he wants, but I just don't think now is the time at UT.

Danielson is the best, in my opinion. It's uncanny how well he can predict the plays an offense is going to run in certain situations. That shows he studies a lot of film and tendencies. 1 year, 11 months ago on SEC Athletic Directors: Time To Hold Your Nose, Hire Petrino

Reply

I don't think that Petrino would be or should be the top choice of any AD, there is just too much to lose if the hire doesen't work out. However, if I couldn't land one of the coaches on my short list, I would certainly hire him as oppossed to a coach with "potential". I think the SEC has proven that it's simply too difficult a league for any on the job training. Where ever  Petrino eventually ends up, it will not be a popular choice for a large portion of the fan base. But, everyone loves a winner and the detractors would eventually be won over when the victories started piling up.

Tennessee fans pretty much knew from day one that Lane Kiffin was a complete jerk who tight-roped the gray area where rules were concerned. But he seemed to be a great recruiter and appeared to have assembled a good coaching staff so fans were okay with looking the other way. He was a jerk but he was "our" jerk. We had hopes that he could improve the program so we overlooked the flaws that was so obvious to non UT fans. Despite his prima-dona, arrogant attitude, he would  be wildly popular  had he stayed at UT and produced a winner.

.

Hiring Petrino would leave a bitter taste in a lot of fans mouths, but  the vast majority of these fans will be more than willing to forgive and forget when the wins come. Since John's column had religious overtones, I will add the following: As long as he could produce SEC and National Championships on a regular basis, most fans would be willing to accept Lucifer himself as their coach.,   .

I would love for UT  ro hire Gruden. Eventhough the hire could possibly be a mistake in the long run, the excitement and anticipation would alone be worht the gamble, at keast in my humble opinion. The possible upside is simply to much to ignore. With that said, I think Vol fans are about to be left standing at the altar while being doused with a bucket of ice-cold water. I think Gruden feeds off of "being wanted" and being relevent and loves the attention he gets each year at this time. I hope the hire materializes but I will believe it when it happens. This would be the most exciting hire in UT athletics since Johnny Majors came home in the mid-seventies. Anyone who is hired will have a percentage of  detractors but I am sure Gruden would have fewer than anyone else, He would unite the fan base and would certainly put butts in the seats.

From a business standpoint, i don't see how UT can keep Dooley. Sure a buyout will put a squeeze on the athletic budget but the Athletic Department will likely lose money again next year, and every year thereafter, if their cash cow fails to draw a near full house. Every dollar the football team fails to take in is a dollar that cannot be used to finance non-revenue sports. Personally, I think the ROI on a buyout is a no-brainer.

1 year, 11 months ago on UT’s Dooley Says Hart Told Him There’s Been No Decision

UT may not be able to afford to fire Dooley without putting itself in a financial bind but, they certainly can't afford to keep him.. $5-million is a lot of money to pay out but it pales in comparison to the amount lost by donor apathy and 25,000 empty seats per game. Not to mention the fall in clothing and memorabilia sales. Sure Dooley was dealt a bad hand but the program has not improved under him - especially from a won-lost standpoint. A new coach, especially if it is a big name coach, would excite the fan base but that coach too must show some gradual improvement. I know Petrino can coach and he will produce a winner wherever he ends up. But I can't help but believe that as many UT fans would be upset at his hiring as those who would be happy.  I think the "Campus Castle" may be stormed if Dooley is not fired and I think it may also be stormed if they make another knee-jerk hire and don't hire a proven commodity. The torches are probably being lit as we speak,  just in case.

My job has me stuck in southeast Texas at the moment and I hve been here for the full football season. There are a ton of LSU fans in this area, second only to Texas I would guess. I think LSU will always recruit strong east of Houston since this area is much more like Louisiana than it is Texas and Baton Rouge is not all that far away. The Longhorns have had super recruiting classes the past few years but the players haven't lived up to their billing. I'm not familiar enough with the Longhorns to have an opinion one way or another whether the players are over rated or if coaching is the problem. The majority of UT fans I have talked to around here seem to like Mack Brown.

I think A&M will benefit more by swapping leagues than any other school since this recent "realignment" has been taking place.

I can see where a Fulmer or Cutcliff would be seriously considered for the job. Although both are getting a little long in the tooth, they would be a recognizable name and both have good track records as recruiters. Either would likely add some stability to the program, at least for the short term. I think Dykes has a huge upside but I am not sure he is ready for the SEC and he does not have the immediate name recognition as Cutcliff or Fulmer. Although Dykes has had success and is obviously a good coach, the SEC is a different animal. It's a career killer for coaches who get the chance but aren't yet seasoned enough. They won't last long and they will likely never get the chance again.

But, I have been around long enough to know that when fan apathy sets in and seats are empty, something is going to be changed.. Will Dooley succeed if given another year or two? I don't have a crystal ball but the track record indicates "No". But, I don't blame Dooley for this situation. It lies at the feet of past A.D.'s and big money boosters who continually botch both hirings and firings of coaches. The football program undoubtedly had declined in Fulmer's final few years but it certainly was far from being in shambles,Why would you announce his firing in mid-season before having another coach lined up? It's not like we were totally desparate at that time. It's not all that easy to lure away a successful coach at a high-level, high profile school and I think UT found that out the hard way. But, most any coach at a mid-major school, whether they are experienced enough or not, would jump at the opportunity to coach in the SEC. There is no reason any SEC team should have to "settle" for a coach without a proven record or at leastt a top-notch assistant from a high profile school. The California Kid had little experience and was a jerk who did not fit into the SEC culture. Dooley knew the culture but had not proven he could coach winning football. It befuddles me why a school with UT's tradition and resources would hire either of these coaches, I do believe that Dooley has to win the remaining games, and look good doing it, in order to have any chance of saving his job.
