While I personally enjoy Spurrier's digs and sound bites,I don't think coaches trash talking would be a good thing. The trash talking itself would likely be entertaining for most fans but we simply have too many redneck fans that would take things to the next level. The fan emotions run high as it is which results in some pretty bad behavior. I think that if the coaches get into the trash talking game, it will stir the pot enough to incite even more fans into doing something stupid. And I do believe that some fans take on the personality of the coach..
Please don't mention Kiffin. Us Vol fans are trying to purge him from memory. Every time his name is mentioned, it makes us get diarrhea again.
Whatever Beilema's current winning percentage is against Saban, I would be willing to bet it's the highest it will ever be.
Spurrier says what other coaches want to but don't have the balls to do so.
In my opinion, Henderson is definitely a leader,. But in his case, that probably is not a good thing.
Maybe now the bitchin about being passed over for the big dance will stop at Kentucky and Tennessee. Makes all that talk about the SEC being under-rated look kinda silly. Before you can be a consistent team, you have to have sound fundamentals and both these teams are lacking. Both also had too many nights when they didn't show up for some reason.
Henderson is a punk without much of a basketball I.Q. Iverson without the corn-rows and a lot less talent. We'll probably read about him in the sports pages for one more year and then the only time we will read about him will be in the police report. A punk with that much mouth is going to get in trouble.
Hunter undoubtably has NFL talent but I don't think he completely recovered from last season's knee injury. From the outside looking in, he appeared to have recovered more physically than mentally. I don't recall him shying away from contact like he seemed to do this year on some occasions. Even with a season somewhat better than this one, I doubt that another year at UT would improve his draft position all that much, if any at all. For selfish reasons I would like to see him return but, if I were in his shoes, I would probably move on as well. I wish him much success in the NFL.
Cheney is a class act and I wish him well. Always low-key and content to be out of the spot-light. On the surface, there appears to be a clash of cultures between Cheney's and Bielema's offensive philosophies, but who knows, this may be a match made in heaven. It will be interesting to see how the Razorback offense looks next year and which philosophy the team leans towards more.
College football needs more people like Marcus.A true class act. Hope he has a great pro career.
Not sure about WKU's QB situation but if Petrino has a decent QB (he will easily be able to recruit one) this will be a stepping stone back to the SEC. He will be coaching with the big boys again within 3-4 years and maybe sooner if an opening occurs before then.
Everyone in Tennessee is a great AD and an even better Head Coach. Most of those making fools of themselves likely didn't even know who Butch Jones was, where he coached or what his track record was because they only watch a few SEC games each year. The only thing a lot of these big-mouths know about football is that they were never very good at playing it. A lot of the more vocal fans wear orange-tinted glasses and think every coach in the nation should beg to come here. They just don't realize that there are many other attractive programs and that you are not always successful at luring coaches away from a successful situation, especially when the money is relatively the same and fans have realistic expectations. I don't think Butch Jones was anyone's first choice but he seemed to be the only coach campaining to come and attempt to get us out of the sewer we are drowning in. Jones has won where ever he has been, is fiery on the sidelines and, by all indications, runs a tight ship. We at least should get behing him and give him a chance. Considering that the football program is in shambles, the Athletic Department is broke and the unrealistic expectations of many of the fans, I believe Jones was about as good as we could have realistically hope for. When all things are considered, I'm not sure we deserve Butch Jones.
After typing this, I am going to fumigate my keyboard and sterilize my hands but I think the best thing for our football program at this point is for us to swallow our pride and dignity and hire Petrino. At least we would have a proven coach and he would not fit into our budget. He has no bargaining power so he would likely agree to any morals clause put in front of him. Make the base pay low and incentive laden with no buyout clause. Once we get over the initial stiench, it would probably be okay.
Sorry for the above typos. I threw my glasses across the room when I read the article and I could not see well with fire in my eyes and no glasses.
I can't believe I am typing this but if Strong turns us down, I think it may be time to sell our soulsl to the Devil and hire Petrino. Or maybe, we sold out soul earlier and we are now in ineternal football hell. I was not opposed to replacing Fulmer but the "Upper Level Medioctity" everyone was bitchin' about during his rein is looking mighty good about now.
Of the two coaches that still SEEM to be on UT's wish list,I could not agree more with VolTN.
Of Strong or Gundy, I think Strong would be the better choice for UT considering his defensive background and his name being more recognizable in the Florida area. Gundy offers more from the offensive side but in the SEC, defense wins championships. I just hope we don't fool around waiting on Gundy to make a decision and have him leave us standing at the altar while Strong gets PO'd by appearing to be the fall-back choice. I remember us losing Kevin Stallings as basketball coach in this fashion when we decided we might have a chance at Tim Floyd. Stallings has had a successful carreer at Vandy while Floyd got USC on probation and we had to endure the Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson eras before we finally hired a decent coach. I believe Gundy is just using this as a way to fortify his status at OSU and make a few dollars in the process.
While this site does post reports from outside entities, many incorrect, , I think they do a good job of making it clear where and from whom the original report came from and makes no claims as to their accuracy.. During coaching searches, speculation is part of the fun. I enjoy reading other articles, substantiated or not. At this time of year, with all of the cloak and dagger interviews, you have to take every article and report with a grain of salt, regardless of where they come from. Some schools intentionally leak misinformation in order to distract from the true path they are taking. Speculation is what makes this time of year and National Signing Day interesting..
It will be interesting to see how Bielema does in the SEC against tough opposition each week and the different style of play. . No hire is a sure thing but I think Bielema is a solid choice. While I'm sure there will be significant improvement next year, it may take 2-3 years until he can recruit his type of athletes before his true worth starts shining through. Congratulatrions to the Hogs.
This year has the most unattractive bowl line-ups I can ever remember, especially the BCS games. I would like to see the bowl tie-ins disolve. The tie-ins result in too many unattractive matchups and too many repeated matchups. I used to live for January 1st when all of the major bowls were on, Now, no so much. Hopefully, the upcoming playoff sysem will add some needed spice. Hope it goes to eight teams quickly.
