@PatrickSF Should have kept reading the textbook: supply and demand is only a critical factor in pricing when both actors are reasonably informed. When one side is less informed, they get screwed. Drivers are usually significantly more informed about road conditions (and what they can get away with) than taxi passengers, and always will be.
Surge pricing really isn't much different to being ripped off by a third-world taxi cab; in both cases you're being charged a premium for something other than the ride.
